A little off-topic, but if anyone's interested, I've been messing around with the RetroUSB AVS' latest firmware beta, which introduces Horizontal interpolation. It's pretty great. If you don't care about core support and want to save $250, the AVS just became a lot more competitive (but I guess it's not like the nt mini is actually available).

Yes, in the same way that the nt mini/super nt is "limited" to 1080p in a 4K world, I guess.

Personally, 1080p doesn't matter to me at this point (when it comes to retro gaming, at least). 720p gets scanlines right, H. Interpolation allows you to get the aspect ratio right, and 720p scales evenly to 4K.

Finally got home to try mine out (first batch), got a little concerned when I saw the purple on the box thinking I may have been sent the American coloured version, but it said SF on the side and the unit itself was as I wanted.

Really surprised with how dense it feels, certainly a solid unit. Dissapointing was the "worldwide" power supply being only for US/JP, it also didn't have the voltage or amperage marked on it, which is poor practice.

Also played the few games I have on hand, Yoshi's Island looks great and I've been using it as my test case for the video options.

I've also got a Super Gameboy 2 in the post that should arrive in the next few days and look forward to replaying Link's Awakening on it.

Overall, definitely worth the cost of entry on this.

According to Analogue, you should be good, but yours might not ship tomorrow, but maybe in next few days
Can you link to the specific tweet? I've ordered a while back just right after the 1st shipments were sent. I went with the Classic look since the grey and purple is timeless to me.

According to the official thread on nintendoage it sounds like the horizontal interpolation could use some work. Most of the feedback seems to be that it didn't help or that shimmering still exists.. I'd like to see some video comparisons that show it enabled and disabled to judge for myself though.

Is this hardware or software emulation? Like, is it built like a SNES, or is it running an emulator like the Retron series of consoles?
Neither :) It's not running a software emulator, which is why all carts with special chips in them, including Super Gameboy which has a whole Gameboy in it, work perfectly. But neither does it have SNES chips in it. Basically, the Super NT has a programmable chip inside it that is programmed to act like the chips in a SNES, creating virtual logic gates and whatnot and running all the virtual chips in parallel. It's kind-of a hardware simulation of the SNES hardware. It's still possible for the results to not be perfect - they have to recreate the internal design of the chips in the SNES, including what happens in undocumented situations when developers do crazy things the hardware wasn't designed to do. But they've been fixing problems with specific games very quickly, and from detailed reviews and tests the Super NT seems roughly as accurate as the most accurate software emulator, Hingan by Byuu (which is way, WAY more accurate than a Retron or a SNES Mini).

The guy who created the SNES core for the Super NT, Kevtris, is known for removing the tops of hardware chips with acid, so he can run an oscilliscope on the traces inside and compare what the chip is doing with his simulation of the chip, to see if there are any differences so he can fix them.

I ordered a black Super NT early, early Wednesday morning, and at the same time started rebuilding my SNES cartridge library by purchasing (authentic) Super Castlevania 4 (Japanese), Donkey Kong Country 2, and Secret of Mana (that dang game was $70!). This thing will be the death of my wallet...but what a way to go!

What's going on with the saturation of colour, comparing no scaler, to any of the others? They look like they have completely different colours? Was not like that before....

For the HQX scalers Kevtris had to convert RGB to YUV. This was how it looked since the original firmware 3.9. Only since 4.3 has he added RGB bypass for no Scaler and 2 - 3x scale which outputs correct SNES RGB colors.

Half of those posts are mine. I've been testing the betas that come out, including the one that just released about 6 hours ago (prior to this beta I am certain interpolation was flat out broken). Regarding me saying that they might still be some shimmering, I also said it might be my plasma, which sometimes isn't perfect at processing black to white transitions (like the windows in Ninja Gaiden's first stage). It's the only time I noticed anything close to shimmering over half a dozen games, so I wanted to compare/contrast with other testers.

Anyway, it's pretty impressive for a beta, especially on a less powerful fpga than the nt mini (last I heard, Kevtris said interpolation on the mini wasn't happening). There's still some bugs to work out, but that's to be expected.

Yes, the RGB -> YUV -> RGB conversion was the problem and Kevtris said he has no plan to fix HQ(2-4)x scalers at the moment, because the conversion is needed for those scalers to save memory, so there is no easy/quick fix.

At the moment I wouldn't recommend to use those scalers. If you do, you should at least try to increase the red color with the gamma option or on your TV/monitor to fix the most obvious problem of that YUV-conversion.

There is still a small problem with RGB, because all RGB values are reduced by 1. So white is 254,254,254 instead of 255,255,255 at the moment. This will be fixed in the next update, but shouldn't really make a visible difference.

Here are my Super FX and SA-1 games, all working with Super NT.
  • Dirt Trax FX
  • DOOM
  • PGA Tour '96
  • PGA European Tour
  • Star Fox
  • Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
  • Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
  • Stunt Race FX
Still need to grab Kirby Dream Land 3, but the prices right now are keeping me from it.
I just bought a copy of Stunt Race FX so that's good to know.

Yeah, I've tested my copies of Star Fox, Super Mario RPG, Kirby Dream Land 3 and they all work.

February 12th. I can't imagine this was part of the second batch since they started shipping those units today?

I'm in Europe.
It had to be part of the second batch. They probably shipped out early to Europe to get them there on time. Did you receive a shipping notice or anything? I think something similar happened during the first round.

I think I ordered on the 12th as well but I am in Canada.

Edit: It was the 15th, but still. That gives me hope I might have it before the weekend or at least on Monday.

Edit 2: A few people seem to have their units. One in Austria and another that might be in the US.

I think you might be right. Ship date is listed as the 26th so that actually was exceptionally fast.

Looks like Europe is getting a lot and they have all been black units so far that I have seen on Twitter. That one I thought was US actually might have been in south east Asia.

Twitter posts show some shipped on the 27th. So fingers crossed these start arriving soon.

I'm impatiently clicking my "get mail" hoping for the email.

Did any of the people that received their second batch order actually get an update before it showed up or are they dropping the ball on that front again?

Of course, if you don't care about the overscan area and use 5x scaling like I do (more faithful to how games looked on a CRT anyway), you're talking about even scaling on a 1080p signal.
