Kevtris explained the power draw of the SuperNT over on Atariage (he answers questions in his old FPGA thread there).

http://atariage.com/forums/topic/242970-fpga-based-videogame-system/page-263#entry3958632

The official adapter is 2A. Imagine they just decided to err on the side of caution a bit. Using a lower rated adapter is more likely to cause problems with the adapter than anything else (pushing it by pulling more than it is rated for is hard on power supplies and can burn them out faster). Although someone said that they were a little under-amped over on Atariage and they were getting audio skipping and stuff.

Just make sure to use a good USB cable / adapter - scrounge one that Samsung or Apple or LG or someone else reputable shipped with a phone or some other high-end product that is likely to have gotten good QA. Something putting out 1A - 2A. If you can't remember which is which, check the label - sometimes the part number is on there and you can google it and find what device it came from.

Cheap cables I think are more dangerous in the USB3 world (more sub-par cables out there than USB2) but cheaply manufactured stuff is always dangerous.

I'm using one of these usb charging gadgets for powering / charging a few things on my AV stand. I've used one for years for charging phones/controllers/gadgets in my desk drawer. Use it to power my Retropie and anything else on the AV stand that needs usb power or charging.

Thank you, this was super helpful :)

Got mine and it's simply great. Fortunately, all of my old carts still work although it's been a twenty year pause for some. Super GB doesn't work with all games, they probably need some cleaning. Next for the jailbreak!

Why are some people placing tape over the dpad inputs?

Diagonals are way oversensitive, makes it too easy to hit a diagonal when you want just up or just right or whatever.

Not always noticeable on something like Mario, but something like Contra it is super noticeable, when you need to quickly go from shooting down/right to ducking for example.

Comparison pics (these are from their older NES30 / SNES30 controller but it still looks the same underneath)

They cloned the feel of the controller on the outside, but didn't try that hard on the PCB. See how the Nintendo one has more like an oval with a circle the middle, and the 8bitdo is just a circle? It's why the d-pad hits diagonals too easily.

The tape is trying to get closer to the Nintendo style.

Some other folks have reported luck swapping the d-pad with an OEM one and having improvement - I did that and it didn't cut it for me. But some people said just adding a square of tape in the middle (so raising the dpad a tiny bit) helped a lot, so it might be that the quality control is a little off, and the d-pad swap helps because it's a bit thicker in the middle or something.

Wow i had not noticed this, but thanks for the explaination. I need to dig out some electrical tape :p

:( still no shipping notice , methinks whoever replied to me earlier suggesting the pallet of black ones must have come off the sea can first was probably correct. I did go buy a 32GB sd card to prep for the 2d2snes at least. Maybe that'll be a surprise today.

Just for anyone who is going to be using rom saves exclusively:

When opening the file menu to save (select+down), you will find the save dialogue. Now that you have the file browser open do not ever press B to back out of the menu. If you do this the save dialogue will not reappear upon reopening the menu

Instead always use select or start to exit the menu (to go back to game, or enter the root menu, respectively.) In doing so the save dialogue will appear every time you enter the menu again (select+down)

I have learned this through much trial and error. If you back out of the menu with B it appears impossible (to me) to save your current game. I have yet to figure out a way to do it
Finally got around to installing the latest JB and I see what you are talking about now. This is definitely a bigger problem than the Nt Mini as it did not prevent you from exiting from the SD menu once you went to the top level menu so the select to exit definitely needs to be fixed. And I can see myself absentmindedly bumping out to the menu to switch a setting not realizing I just screwed myself later when I try to save.

VERY easy to shoot yourself in the foot right now, even more so than Nt Mini so absolutely spend some time understanding this issue!!! You will lock yourself out and lose progress at some point if you don't wrap your head around it. Hope it is fixed in the next update.

Yay, my unit showed up a day early like a few others (it was a black unit). I get a kick out of the idea that there was a dhl truck in toronto with 3 SuperNT on it. =)

Got mine! So I installed the jailbreak which was a bit scarier than I thought. I didn't read that you can only have the JB file on their with nothing else. I had loaded it on with my rom folders and the led kept flashing red and freaking out. I eventually turned it off when the led stopped flashing. When I turned it back on again it still didn't come on. I deleted the JB file from the card and put it back in. Still wouldn't come on. Then I removed my Yoshi's Island famicom cart and it worked fine from the SD card with the jailbreak installed. Am I not supposed to have a cartridge in this thing with the SD card? I haven't heard anyone mention that.

Yes, UK - does the Pi one linked above fit the bill? It's a little over seems :/
If you need 5V 2a, then you basically want something with exactly 5V and at least 2a. Depending on the device, a voltage regulator may allow you to have more than 5V in this case, although I believe that the device in question will run hotter, potentially shortening its lifespan. If you go too high, then you can outright damage the device. Now, it's okay to go higher than 2a, however, as the device generally won't pull more power than it needs, so more than 2a is completely okay. You don't, however, want to use a power supply with less than 2a, as the device will still try to pull what it needs, and a power supply that can't supply at least 2a in this case will run much hotter (and likely die much sooner). A power supply with less than 2a will likely also cause abnormal behavior in the device.

Got my second Super Nt today, a black one. Gotta say... the black one is wonderful. It matches all my other electronics and equipment and that makes me feel warm and fuzzy. Waiting on a black 8bitdo SN30 and I'm going to swap the face buttons with purple ones from a spare SNES controller. It will be magnificent!

it's so hard for me, my initial impulse is always to press "B" seven times every time I load up that menu

So as someone who owns a super everdrive, it sounds like the best bet is to jailbreak and float the SD card between console and Everdrive? I saw that ROMs load considerably faster than on my super everdrive.

**just biding time until I finish my shift to return home to my shipped Super NT!!!

Haha, what's the problem? It's a cheap toy to play the games that I love in high fidelity. When it costs nearly $90 to fill my car with gas, this seems like a worthwhile, long-lasting purchase.
It's that you're getting a second system while a bunch of us pedestrians are stuck kicking rocks waiting for a shipping email that is apparently lost inside of a black hole. :p

Oh yeah, *that*. Well, I don't make the rules, and I'm even in Canada and expected this thing to take ages to get here. It's payback for waiting on other stuff over the years. On the other hand, after shipping and taxes converted to CAD, it cost $285. I remember paying $115 after tax for Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy VI, etc, on release.

The black Super Nt is also black on the bottom (the rubber pad) and you can't read the text on it. Didn't expect that. It's also slipperier than the grey bottom of my SF unit. After all of this power adapter/voltage/amperage talk, I decided to use a beastly Aukey USB charger brick that's been tested to put out 3A and a 20 AWG USB cable that's 3ft. System's definitely not starving for power now!

Definitely getting pissed off I haven't gotten a shipping notice yet. I ordered on the 16th. They said units would ship on March 1st. For $30 shipping I expect better.

Another Canadian reporting in with their haul. Couldn't be happier with this product so far. Jail breaking was very quick and I love how I could just slide my everdrive sd card right in. The attention to detail even on the cables had me impressed. Definitely feels like a premium product. Here's a picture of mine:

Black orders are the lucky ones. Haven't seen anyone get an SNES one, like I have on order, or transparent one yet. A few SF ones on the analogue Twitter though. Feels bad man.
It's weird, and yeah that's the one I'm waiting for as well.

Oh it's not that, it's that you've already got 2 and I'm still waiting to hear about my first and only one being SHIPPED.

They updated on Twitter. All orders should be shipped by end of day Wednesday. So that's a plus? Let's see if that one-day Canadian shipping is true.

^^^ and man the black looks better in real photos. I like how the plastic looks, texture seems nice.

Well fingers cross that us rock kickers get notification tomorrow or Wednesday then. At least I have Neir Automata to mess around with in the meantime. (pain to get running right on PC but once you do it's pretty solid)

All I need. Well, except I'm ordering an extension cable because I like to use my OEM SNES controller.

I started with 720p and scanlines but tried this later on:

Since the RGB colour passthrough update, and realising 1080p scanlines work perfectly at 1200 height (no scaler) with 1365 width, I've completely settled on h and v interpolation engaged, normal 105 scanline depth, and gamma RGB lock at 110, I'm 100% happy now, it looks bloody great.

Must say, I'm already quite happy with it. Maybe gamma still has to be adjusted a bit. Any recommendations?

I am playing Starfox PAL cart (Starwing in the UK) and have a graphics glitch on the title screen and during gameplay. This is a FX chip game and my Yoshis island cart works fine. anyone else have this or know how to fix it? I have cleaned the cartridge thoroughly with 99% isopropanol on the contacts.

images of the problem - note the black bar on the arwing in the background on the title screen.

Well after getting my unit yesterday, all excited to try it out when I got home, and then I was not able to find my original SNES controllers. Found my old SNES but the controllers weren't with it. What a disappointment. I tried looking for them again tonight and found them tucked away in an old suitcase!!! Woohoo! So I spent this evening playing my old games. Every one worked without needing a clean. Then tried my GB games in my super GB, and had a blast with those as well. I noticed the sound coming out of the Super GB was much louder than the SNES games.

I ran it off the USB from my TV with no issues whatsoever, but I'm going to get a plug converter tomorrow so I can use the included USB plug. Oh and get an SD card so I can update to the latest firmware. Its fantastic.
