Just ordered the DS Version but will definitely buy the PC version once the modders fix it. Though it's looking fantastic GhostTrick, so far, amazing work

Can you guys try to run a sweetFX CRT / soft scanlines to this ?

So we can see if we can somewhat salvage it ?

But i'm still bothered by

- horrendous UI

- reports of strange AI behavior

- cutscenes not playing

To justify a purchase.

Looks like there's a beta branch on steamdb now. Very curious to see if an official patch actually emerges. The actual work from they'd have to do from visual standpoint to make this great again is fairly minimal, they have the unedited assets and cocos2d UI tools are fairly neat, they could make a better UI in a jiffy. I mean the UI is functional, it just looks ugly as sin, right?

People often talk about Nier A as an example of Square's shitty patching practices, but now that I think about it, that's pretty much the only game they haven't patched lately, right? WoFF, Star Ocean, Romancing SaGa all got fairly quick patches didn't they?
There's also an updated branch on FF12, so someone's working on that too.

Hope springs eternal.

Well, Final Fantasy IX comes to mind. It received a pretty good PS4 patch in december, improving upon the originally mobile based UI. Around the same time there was some movement on steamdb, but that was months ago now. They were clearly planning to, but so far there has been no word of them bringing this patch to PC.

I don't know what you are seeing, but there's nothing in steamdb after the February 2017 patch that would suggest that, doesn't look like they were planning anything. Genre flip flops and .NET redist updates are not anything of note.

I also did say lately, FF9 is almost two years old now on PC, I would have been quite surprised if they had updated it 18 months later.

I honestly don't know a whole lot about steamdb, so my apologies if that was wrong information. I remember being told by folks that the PC version was 100% going to get the PS4 update around the time it released because of steamdb info, and was disappointed when it became clear that wasn't going to happen. I guess they didn't base that on anything substantial then? I definitely shouldn't have said "clearly" there, sorry.

I wouldn't have been surprised though, updating it felt logical to me. The PS4 release is just a port of the PC version, people had been asking for that patch, and mainline FF games are pretty evergreen on steam. I figured it counted as lately because of that PS4 release. Two current versions of the same game, one of them got recent support and one didn't.

But yeah, their recent PC releases seem to be getting better support.

I mean you are absolutely right that it would make sense and is perfectly logical, I can only imagine that the PC build was archived away at some point or they lost it again and didn't want to optimize for PC again or something equally silly. I suppose there's always hope, they did also roll out these Chrono Trigger updates to the mobile versions of the game, so they are not strangers to updating older games. Even with updates that no one wanted. :D

But in a way it feels like after Nier someone at Square said 'hey this Nier thing did pretty good on PC, do you think it might have done better if we fixed it' and couple people heard him. Maybe Tabby was in the room and said to also make sure it run on his AMD PC.
But then they release this CT abomination and you are reminded that while they might support their games now, they still don't respect their legacy the way we hope they would.

Thanks GhostTrick. Sorry if you've already answered this, but does your mod also remove the mobile UI?

It doesnt. It does remove the emoji line while naming character and removes a leftover of the mobile ui in some maps which shouldnt appear. For the mobile UI some people are actually working on it.

It's really nice to see the modding community get behind this, but it's also frustrating that it was needed in the first place. The fact that the community, over the span of a week or so, were able to greatly improve the visual quality of this port while Square-Enix themselves seemingly couldn't (or wouldn't), speaks volumes.

I love Chrono Trigger, and it'd be nice to play it on the PC, but I'm finding it really difficult to purchase and support this thing, given the lack of work that went into it. :(

I was holding out for Chrono Trigger on the Switch, but this whole situation made me realize if it comes it will be a mobile port. So I hunted down a DS version of the game at GameStop yesterday.

Well the biggest problem is that Square-Enix actually spent money and time to make it worse. They worked it this way because they thought it was better like this.

Square-Enix has a real problem when it comes to older titles.

Yeah, it's really depressing to see. :(

Still major respect to you as well as the rest of the modding community, some excellent work being done here! The game definitely deserves the love/care you guys are giving it, as it's easily my favorite RPG of time (and among my top five games ever).

Yup, much respect to the modding community but I will not purchase this game again until Square fixes the issues themselves since that's where the money goes.

It seems Square Enix is working on a fix for this game.

"We're aiming to release the first of these patches in the first half of April, and the biggest change is that it will include an option to switch between the current high-resolution graphics, and the original graphical style of CHRONO TRIGGER.

We'll post a full list of changes here when the first patch is released. For now, be assured that we're working very hard on adjusting, updating and supporting CHRONO TRIGGER on Steam."

If they truly manage to fix it, I'm 100% going to buy this finally.

"Current high resolution graphics" lol. They ran them blindly through a filter and called it a day.

Might actually pick this up if the patches sufficiently fix it.

Honestly, I'd be happier with a ROM and an emulator with a good CRT filter. There's no way that Square's patches will match that.

I do enjoy the pursuit in this thread and the work done by above individuals and others as a project on the steam version/mobile port version or whatever it is. It looks nice.

That said yeah this is how I will continue to play the game, just snes9x or bsnes on the original rom. Plus I like the scanlines options the emulators have. Finnicking around in a pc version to get the same enabled across the library of snes or other platform games is just too much when emulating is so readily available.

I wish there was a "Sonic Mania filter" app like re-shade. I want that sharp filter on every pixel game.

A good CRT shader can look pretty damn awesome:

y3zryFL.jpg

You're losing clarity compared to the default image, no doubt, it's definitely blurrier, but I'd argue you're actually gaining detail at the same time. A bunch of darker colored pixels suddenly become nice looking shadows, a few white pixels give the illusion of some kind of bloom effect. By making the image smoother and blending the pixels together, you end up with more consistent looking materials. You can guess what those different colored pixels are supposed to be in the default picture, but it actually becomes a convincing effect with a CRT shader.

You can see with "CRT (composite)" how the colors get a bit too yellow, though, so it's not without flaws (CRTs weren't perfect, after all), but the overall result you get gives the impression of higher graphical fidelity, only with lower image quality. I'd say it's a good trade off.

Ideally, you'd get both more detail and more clarity, but that's not how pixel art works. I wouldn't ask for a CRT filter in the KH PS4 Collection just because I played KH for the first time on a CRT screen, for example.

I usually can't figure out how to configure the reshade CRT shaders' resolution options to get them looking right.

This is a big improvement from release. I did not expect them to also tackle the font with this patch, but they now have the DS version font in and it looks so much better.

Of course there's still more to fix, but this is a very good first step.

Personally I would like UI from SNES and it would be perfect for me.

I'm happy SE said this is the first of few patches to come. This port can only get better and better now.
