Excuse my ignorance, but I often see frame rate issues due to network congestion in busy areas in MMOs - could that in turn lead to screen tearing if that's how the hardware deals with low frame rate?

No worries, framerate issues in MMOs in something like a city/etc would be due to your CPU/GPU having to process all the users on the screen at once. The more actual things your computer physically has to render (AKA more things on screen at once) will absolutely slow down FPS and other performance issues related to your GPU/CPU. If it were network issues, you'd be experiencing timeouts, lag, etc if Blizzard's servers and netcode couldn't handle all the traffic. Basically, even though you experienced those symptoms in WoW on heavy congestion areas, it wasn't due to the amount of people logging in at one time or the net code, simply the amount of people that could be RENDERED at once on your own machine.

So in this game, as you can't have that many people on your screen or even in your game at once like that (not even close). Many people trying to log in at once or bad netcode would leave to lag, unable to log in to servers, things like that. Not sure if that helps you understand, but screen tearing/framepacing/lag are not network or congestion issues. What you experienced in WoW was the effect of so many people being able to be put on screen at one time, which is why that game was so CPU intensive (one of the reasons).

Little over 100. They have been hiring a lot lately though.

Well that is pretty small for a major studio. Can't expect them to do the same amount of work like a 400+ studio in the same time.
The updates will make or break this game long term. Let's see how the next few months will go.

LinkedIn says they're at 217. I think they have a small team or two working on incubation projects, but most of the studio was on SoT during its initial development and I think they said they intend to keep a big team on it to keep making more content.

had the most fun (!) with a game today since years when we sneaked on a ship while the opposing crew was searching for chests on a bigger island. we stole a couple of skulls and chests right under their nose without firing a shot. when we got back with the last chest they noticed and returnd. but we had a headstart with set sails and a race to the next outpost began. captain made a smart decision which forced them to go around an island and we lost them. exchanged the goods at the outpost when they caught up and chaos ensued with multiple deaths/respawns on both sides and grim greetings on the ferry of the dead. it was hilarious...

i really believe rare has a true gem here if they manage to set up a steady content build up.

Just went on a few voyages with some randoms. Had a blast.

I have to say though, this game (at least on PC) is going to die 100% due to the sheer fuckery that is the Xbox app. Couldn't see invites, people who are clearly online appearing offline, notifications not appearing, app crashing, had to restart it 3 times just to get the friends list to load.

In Steam I right click my friend and click join game. Bam. Done. No hassle.

i listened to an interview with craig duncan awhile back. Said something like 100-120. May have just been on SOT. Don't remember which interview.

Wow, was just sailing through a giant storm solo on a sloop with lots of captain chests and skulls!
This game has some super stunning moments and the atmosphere is top notch most of the time.

I find a lot of the negativity for this game to be quite disheartening as it is often aimed at a lot of things that I enjoy very much and that have been absent from games for many years (no tutorials / trial and error, sandbox PvP gameplay, focus on atmosphere and world building without xp bars or rewards on every stone you find).

Guess it was to be expected, I might stay out of these threads if it gets any worse and come back once the hype has died down and the rest of us are allowed to have fun.

We ran into this crew that was incredibly toxic. They were shouting racial slurs at as while they chased us across the map. I managed to kill one and he unloaded a heavy message on me while we were on the ferry of the damned.
He said, "What you stupid n*****? You're so fucking bad at the game. I hope you commit suicide in real life, you piece of n**. A stupid n*****."

I recorded the whole thing on video but I'm not sure where to report it.

lol, what? The game's laggy as hell. People just endlessly spawn until you sink their ship. Then they spawn back in their ship at the nearest outpost and just come back and fight.
Yeah the penalty for dying and losing your ship is weak. Summit had stream snipers following him all day today. Boot them to another server.

IDK, LinkedIn could be wrong if people left the company and didn't update their profile.
I recall an interview from 2016 or so where Duncan or Mayles said around 80% of the studio was on SoT, but I don't recall them giving a specific number of people.

First time playing tonight. Did one voyage solo and when coming back to an outpost, ran into a group of four that just decided to start shooting at my ship and sunk it.

Definitely not something I see myself playing alone, but will try to give it a try in a group and sent a request to the ERA club.

At level 13, 14 and 12 ( gold, souls merchant) as a mainly solo player.
Merchant takes the most time but it feels.like i get more money and rep per quest. They really have to change ow they hand out cages though.

This so much. There has been a lot of shit posting, that review thread is a tragedy and certain users posting the same crap over and over again. It is really bad. I don't know how many times I am reading it is not worth $60.00. The value of something is what the purchaser decides and for me and almost everyone I have played this game with have all said it is well worth the price with the amount of entertainment you get out the game. I 100% agree with some concerns of content and what content is there is repetitive, but the game loop when playing with others out shines that part. I do believe we will get a lot more varied content, but 100% agree with your post.

This shit was the follow the signs of death light the way or something and dig 8 paces west of the north gate.....problem is....there is literally a giant wall west of the north gate. We shoveled the entire beach before saying fuck it and left lol

Was sitting at an outpost browsing the forums and noticed somebody ran up to me. They weren't hostile so I started dicking around with the emotes and what not. Realized it was a first timer and he was on PC so I couldn't invite him to a party. Ended up going on his ship and let him complete the voyage I had open at the time, all while we were getting chased by other crews and I was explaining the game to him via emotes and what not. Was a hilarious experience... not something you get from any other game.

A lot of the negatively seems to have moved to the review thread. It has certainly died down here.

Those 5 minutes or so between opening the vault and leaving the fort with your hard-earned rewards is one of the more tense periods I've felt in a game in years and that was with other crew mates.

I can't imagine how nerve-wracking it is when you're on your own.

Oh man...it was crazy tense. Every time I brought a piece of treasure back to the ship I scanned the horizon for other players. I kept thinking, "Should I go back for more?" I took every piece except for that damn Chest of Sorrow, didn't need to babysit that thing while I was trying to get my loot back to the outpost.

Some early first impressions.

Played for a few hours and have enjoyed it so far but have also come across some annoyances and issues.

1. Playing solo is a hassle in multiple ways. Not being able to hold more than one thing at once, for example, makes repeat trips very necessary.

2. Coordinates on treasure maps don't actually relate to the ship's map. This one is incredibly annoying, probably 25 minutes of my playtime has been me scrolling through the ship's match looking for an island that matches the treasure map I have. I just find it incredibly difficult and it's annoying that it doesn't give accurate coordinates.

3. The player respawning system. Just got burned on this one. Spent the last 30 mins or so sailing to an island and looking for some buried treasure but part way through another solo ship turned up and tried to sink mine whilst I was on the island. I boarded his ship and killed him but he just respawned on his ship and sank mine whilst I was heading back to the island. That meant when I did find the treasure I couldn't do anything with it because I was respawned in a completely different location after getting my ship back. This is the biggest issue tbh and I think it's just a case of no matter what they do, dying to or killing another player will always be a hassle.

4. Combat isn't good. Not bad either, serviceable but not good. Doesn't help that the game seemingly only has skeletons as the only NPC enemy.

5. Little variation in ships. It would be nice if you could buy new ships and upgrade your ship over time to improve it's speed, durability, cannon types, amount of cannons and things like that. Would be a nice form of progression but sadly it seems like there's just the big and small ships that are based on how many are in your crew and the only progression is cosmetic.

6. No third person. Looking through the clothing and hair shop it seems like you can get a bunch of really cool things but since you can't go third person you won't actually be able to appreciate them yourself. I know you can do certain gestures and emotes that will put you in third person but that's not really a solution.

7. Seeming lack of mission content? Correct me if I'm wrong but my early impression is that the 3 main quest types won't change much. The core of the game seems to be focused on sailing to an island and either killing skeletons, delivering something or looking for buried treasure. I could be wrong but that's just not enough variation. I want to be solving riddles and exploring through cave systems, plundering towns and doing actual pirate stuff. Why aren't there any towns or places for me to raid? For a pirate I seem like an incredibly agreeable person who just does little fetch quests for people. A proper core questline would do a lot to make the game feel like it has more substantial content.

8. Seemingly not enough variation in the sea. I know we have the kraken but there is potential for so much more, again maybe I just haven't seen it yet but I want fierce storms, tsunami's, ghost ships and the like. Even npc merchant ships that you can board and raid for gold and other treasures. Again to make you feel like more of a pirate

9. No NPC crewmates. Not a problem if you're not playing solo but almost all of my friends are PS4 so being able to hire NPC crew mates who can be commanded to do things would be useful and would also let solo players experience the bigger ships without having to deal with the majority of randoms just putting you in the brig.

So yeah, I could probably come up with more but I feel like I've said enough. The game has a lot of potential but I feel like it's really lacking and tbh even if I was playing with friends I don't think it would have too much longevity. Will continue to play for now and see if things improve but I'm not that hopeful. I honestly think the multiplayer focus really limited what they could do with the game and if they had focused on single player with more pirating content the game would have been a lot better.#
Would appreciate some corrections if I've gotten anything in my impressions wrong.

Doh. Yeah gotta keep an eye on the horizon at all times for other ships. The sloop is faster against the wind and can turn quicker. If you see another ship docked at an Outpost, head to another Outpost on the Map.

Thanks guys, I tweeted it out to some folks at Rare and Xbox Support, I hope it gets seen. It is definitely not the type of pirate I expect to see on the seas.

I'llshare a link here, but be warned it is extremely offensive, NSFW, mentions suicide, etc.

The game is not without its faults. I think a lot of people need to have something to work towards; they don't like grinding, but they'll do it if it means they gain power, attack, defense, health, etc. A lot of gamers--heck, me too--needs some form of confirmation re: their hamster wheel is worth it.

Rare's biggest mistake was presuming that their game in this state, with a dearth of varied content, would be able to break that for a sizable chunk. It has for me and my friends, but for others, they need that loot box. They need arbitrary level numbers. They need barriers so they can go through them.

And I get that, I really do. Like I said, I too often need that.

But I don't understand shitting on one's fun just because it's not the game for you. I don't understand reveling in perceived failure of Rare, Microsoft, Xbox, etc. I don't understand victory laps because a video game has mixed reviews. I don't get it!

This game has provided me with 70+ hours of fun through multiple alphas, tests, betas, and the final release. When it hits it's absolutely intoxicating.

Oh well.

Before I start I have a few questions from the alpha which I played only an hour or two

the main hub, that had some guy in a tent that gave us a quest, and other people in shops/tents is that the MAIN hub? meaning every single quest goes in and out of that one island? there is no other place to get jobs?

There are several outposts. But they offer the same quests.

No. Each outpost has the same type of quest givers. There are a lot of outposts on the map.

The only time you will need to go to a specific outpost is when delivering stuff via the Merchant Alliance Quest Givers. Otherwise, you can go to any Outpost to start and finish quests.
