Was in a podcast or in Q&A he said he was going to propose but GT shutting down threw a wrench on his plans, and the rest of the allies freaked out since his girlfriend could watch the video? I distinctly remember that in the EZA year one.
Yeah that was two years ago but he reiterated it in Frame Trap this week for the first time since so now it's really happening.

By the way if you do want to check out my best of series, here's a link to the first video/playlist in chronological order and you can take your time going through it, on average, two 10-20 minute videos cover a week's worth of content. I've covered January 1st - August 4th, 2017 so far.

The way I see it, the most likely way the Allies will get a studio is through a revenue stream in addition to Patreon.

Their Patreon numbers are extremely high and very impressive but seem to have plateaued where they're at. To expect an additional $9000 per month consistently seems unrealistic through Patreon.

My pie in the sky wish is that they take a page from kinda funny and start a second patreon for non video game things. Problem is they are already so busy that time would become an issue instead of money. I know time is already an issue.

I just miss mandatory update nights :(

Only watched part of the last group stream so far but the whole Mario Odyssey section was fantastic. The others watching Damiani and cracking jokes had me in stitches.

It WAS like watching someone with a gambling addiction.

Kyle's new D&D character, Villiend or however you spell it. And then there should be two Pompers, original Dragonborn Pomper, and Real Boy Pomper.

Anyone have any idea where I can buy the Love & Respect shirt Bosman was wearing in the Easy Allies in Concert performance?

Accidentally activated youtube captions while checking out something in a past podcast, and when Jones says "I'm enjoying those microtransactions", the captions say "I even joined those microtransactions".

This, clearly, is the future. Become the lootbox.

Hasn't the worry been for Jones that if they do fundraising drives or try and rally the Patrons to get the numbers up for the studio, that they'll simply be artificially inflating the numbers? The issue with the studio is that it's not a one-time "we need to hit this goal!" kind of thing; it's a very serious investment. They need to reach and stay at 50K as naturally as possible, based solely on the strength of their content, not from a stream marathon where excitement in seeing numbers go up is the main motivator.

Honestly (and very cynically), I believe the only way we'll get back to anything close to the "everyone making stuff in the same space all day" kind of thing is if they get a serious sponsorship/partnership that can foot the bill for that long-term. But the problem with that is that isn't what they want. They like not having to answer to one person/company/corporation. And I don't think that's what we would want either. Their independence is their biggest strength and I'd hate to lose it simply because we want a studio.
Except like Szeth said, their drive worked last year. At the start of 2017 they were regularly sitting around $38k, then in March they had a big fundraising drive with their anniversary stream and they gained a significant amount of patrons and pledges. They haven't been below $40k ever since and even regularly had ~6300 patrons and $45k funds for June and July.

As for sponsorships/partnerships, if you compare EZA's sponsorship tier ($500 for the main podcast and $250 for Frame Trap) to Kinda Funny's ($10k each for their two main shows), it's pretty jarring. It's cool that it's cheap enough that we see indie devs, small business owners and even patrons pitch in but at the same time, sure seems like EZA are selling themselves extremely short.

To be honest, if it were up to me I'd get rid of the studio goal entirely. No-one knows what exactly it'll bring or change, especially when you've got Brandon out there muddying the waters by saying he'd still work from his garage, so make it more of an implied goal than an implicit one and replace it with something more tangible that they could actually do with the studio. I think something like making Frame Trap a weekly show would get fans a lot more excited, assuming that's possible and the commute time to the studio is a lot better for Ben and the other Allies.

No, I don't think fundraising in general is a bad idea. What I was talking about and what I think Jones has been afraid of is putting the studio up as "the thing" they're aiming for as part of a fundraising drive. It's not like it's something that can just be bought wholesale from the funds; it's an ongoing expense and so the Patreon would need to maintain high numbers. It's a risky venture to assume that just because they haven't dipped below 40K after a fundraiser, that they also wouldn't dip below 50K. But yes, fundraising works and EZA should consider it in the future, if only to get funds for better equipment or something. Reconfigure the tiers and do a 12 hour stream and I think they'll see some progress.

I had no idea Kinda Funny had that large of a sponsorship tier. I think that could simply be a matter of "this is what we feel we're worth" kind of thing, because Greg is definitely more of a face and a name than any of the Allies, Kyle included. I don't think it'd be ridiculous to maybe consider higher sponsorship tiers for the flagship podcast, to at least try it out, but that's not my decision to make. I wonder if they also back away from that because they don't want to feel beholden to advertisers. When you get people forking over that much cash per month, there is an implied power balance that could be troublesome if say, they don't like something Kyle does or something Ian says.

And I agree: ditch the studio as a goal. I think it made sense back when things were getting rolling, but it needs to be something that isn't dictated by Patreon numbers, but rather the actual financial reality of their organization.

I think legally I have to point out that that is a Hoeg Law hat Blood has on backwards (and that he performed "Four Foods" in). Didn't even realize until he told me.

But it's also worth noting: They have access to stats we can't see. They probably see that the fundraisers were pushing people that already donate instead of driving new patrons. And they can see the timeframe where this bump decays.
Maybe they don't think it's sustainable to keep pushing for new fundraisings in this way. They actually did a patron drive where they recognized new patrons specifically. It's a concern of theirs.

So... what are the options? Well, geting more subs and convert them to patrons.

Subtle changes like the podcast titles/thumbnails, or guesting on other places (Huber and Blood on KF, recently) and bringing in guests (Ben Hanson on the podcast) to shows like Box Peek are all things that will help them getting their name out there outside of their current fanbase.

That's why I really don't understand why people criticize that they're not trying enough to "grow". They can't just keep adding goals. It's more important to do what they have now the right way (retrospectives, sleuths) than changing it up just for announcements sake.

(And that 6300 patrons number... that was before Patreon tried to change their payment percentages, right? Because that didn't help and ended up making people unpledge)

Exactly. It's incredibly annoying to see these conversations here when they very clearly are trying new things that seem small but doing wonders. Changing the podcast to have clickbait titles instead of just a number, having better and more unique video thumbnails, unique content like Box Peek and the concert, new retrospectives, guests on the podcast etc etc.

I don't understand why we need to know their plans. I asked Jones and Blood at the concert what they had in store for the next year and they absolutely seemed pumped for what's in store.

The latest Patreon post mentions about revealing new stuff this year.

It sometimes feels like people are holding their Pateron pledges hostage, subtly demanding "change or else," hence the cries of "tell us everything you're doing." We're all thirsty for that one piece of content that will either make us happy or possibly bring in more people to get us to the next big goal, but yeah, I do think after two years, we ought to trust the Allies aren't sittin' around complacent in how things currently are. They're brewing stuff and they'll tell us when they're ready to tell us. I think they've learned not to show their hand too early, thanks to some recent issues like the Souls Retro.

Personally, I've always believed it's going to take a ton of small things to see significant (as in quality) growth and I've been impressed with the changes they've made so far and look forward to what's in store. YouTube is their best means of outreach, getting their videos to show up in people's recommendations will slowly grow the brand, and I think they're aware that the algorithm is their friend and it's time to abuse it.

I'm really only in favor of fundraising if it's for specific goals, like a Box Peek type thing or for equipment like a tri-caster. I think that can bring in new patrons, but I still believe it's not a real sustainable means of achieving quality growth.

So I took the 5$ patreon thing but actually I don't really know how this works lol
Are they going to send me a link to the podcast? Or do I have to check something myself?

I assume it's not active yet though because it said that my first payment will begin on april 1st.

Also, the VAT taxes for France is 1$ :( I don't know how taxes work really but I assume it won't be going in EZA pockets :/

The podcast usually goes up on Wednesday for Patrons, so you'll get a notification from Patreon when they post the podcast (one post for the video, one for the RSS).
