I 100% understand all of the criticism leveled at this game. It's currently too expensive for $60 and could really use more to do. That said, holy crap do I just love this game. I find it very relaxing to sail around and hunt for treasure or skeletons. I didn't go into this wanting some high investment progression based game. I have that in spades with Monster Hunter World. I've mostly played solo and I've found it to be a great way to just unwind as it's been a really stressful run of days with work. Also, spending time with my friends in this has just been very nice. However, me saying 'this is why I like this game!' is not the point of this post.

Friends, I have a story.

Last night my friends and I gathered for our first voyage as a full crew and upon loading in the first thing we see is an active skeleton fort. What followed was numerous naval engagements with multiple crews, desperate defenses against hordes of angry skeletons, and trickery and deception. Three crews of ships fought over this skeleton fort for about two hours, none of us seemed to be able to gain a permanent foothold on this accursed rock. BUT! as things seemed to get their most dire, our ship returning from being sunk with only two of us still at the fort, and surrounded by skeletons and hostile pirates, the skeleton boss finally spawned. We hatched a desperate plan.

We killed the pirate boss as fast as possible, retrieved the key and then hid it so the other crews could not find it! We waited for our ship to return and piled on and sailed away, leading the remaining galleon on a wild goose chase which ended with us acting like we had turned in all of the treasure at a nearby outpost. When the enemy galleon left, we drove them away with the power of music, my crew sailed under the cover of night back to the skeleton fort to retrieve our prize!

With our treasure collected, we ended our nights adventure by sailing off the edge of the map playing ride of the Valkyrie in the crows nest as we sank into the waves.

This game's got problems, but ya'll this games pretty ok.

Dark, they are releasing a patch early next week for Xbox one X. Do you want to hold the final video until that is patched? or just update with another video later on?
Well, I'm planning to highlight all the beautiful visual flourishes in this one. I'll discuss performance (which is very bizarre in how it manifests) and note that a patch is coming. Perhaps look at it next week then.

Is there a way to even judge it by content ? Like is there a start and end point ? Or when it ends you grind to get costumes if you see fit ? are missions essentially procedurally generated in one endless loop? or is there a way to "see" all the content the shelve it.

I kind of hope they add a few incentives to play solo as things take longer to do, like holding 2 items or chests instead of one, just things that make it a little easier for us to do.
Eh, having to lug around each item is great imo. You just have to be more creative if solo. I was trying to turn in two chickens the other day while being chased by a galleon. Landed on the island and hid one in the bushes, delivered the second one and then went back to the bushes for the bushes for the first.

Its one thing that I hope they don't change

Finally had my first real PvP deathmatch. It was bizarre. l

We just turned our stuff in and saw another galleon on a neighboring island. We have nothing to lose, let's go terrorize them.

We park right behind them. Inches behind them. And unload cannon rounds. We spent the next 20 minute with both ships crews just fighting and respawning over and over. All of us spending more time in the death ship than actually killing each other. We eventually sunk and it ended. Im sure they sunk immediately after.

It was hilarious but also really weird.

I don't know what to think about it.

There is no way to add a foruth player after you started a three player game, right?

at the moment no. They are adding 'invite only' crews that you can go in with to be able to invite players after loading in. This didn't make launch as it was going to affect the algorithm for player count per server.

You are better off sinking their ship preventing the respawn. If we're in the same situation where the other ship is stationary, we would park off maybe 100 meters away, making so they have to swim out or shoot out of a cannon to get to us and we just shoot a bunch of cannonballs below the water line to sink the ship. You were basically too close to get any meaningfull hits in as any rounds penetrating the hull are above the waterline, which wont flood the ship.

I find many people aim far too high in engagements and can't get any water in so it becomes this 10 minute slug fest of cannon balls flying about and guys trying to board.

Had a situation yesterday that actually made me feel a bit guilty.

Buddy and I had just turned in our sweet skeleton fortress lot as we saw another boat coming towards the outpost. We waited in a building to ambush them and as we did the one carrying a captains chest, obviously some 10 year old kid, was screaming as if he was being tortured. He screamed and screamed as he ran, and just before he reached his boat again I finished him with a sniper shot...

Got a nice 1200 gold for it, but damn. Hope that kid keeps playing and returns the favor some day.

Definitely had at least one scenario where I've done some devious pirate shit and instantly regretted it.

I managed to get on last night. I have been on the fence about this game all along. My main problem being that i dont really play online and if I do, I don't have voice enabled. I played the beta for a bit, tried playing alone and playing with strangers (with both good and bad experiences).
As a single player I quickly learned that when you come up against a galleon, with 4 on board, you aren't going to win. This lead to some pretty tense play, trying to stay far enough away from the 'big boys' whilst still trying complete missions. But after the beta I was still in two minds...

With the advent of the half price game pass I decided to stick 6 months on it so I could have another play when the game released.

Last night my friend and I played locally in the same room, him on Xbox and me on pc. It was a bit of an arse-ache (i had to play on crappy old monitor screen). But it was so much more fun. We had a 2 man sloop and it was great working together/bickering/laughing etc.

The thing is, it really made me wish for local co-op. I find it really sad that they can't / won't do this.

My friend only had a 14 day Xbox live trial, he let his xbl gold expire cos he switched to PS4 this gen. So unless I can figure out how to get him to play on my Xbox with a free guest account our fun shall be short lived.

Shame really, it is indeed a beautiful game and fun to play with the right people. I hope it is a success for Rare.

That's pretty awesome, and of the reasons I stick around this place and on the game. It creates encounters, stories. I have fond memories of a lot of linear and content-filled games, but when a game gives you an unusual canvas and you're basically left on your own with other players, crazy stories like these can happen. That's why reading PUBG, Sea Of Thieves, No Man's Sky or Minecraft threads is a vastly different experience than reading, say, Uncharted or Quantum Break ones. In the latter everyone lives the same story with minor changes at best, here you build your own, and this is what truly remains memorable imho. Not to downplay the game's issues, but it's the reason why this game is special.

Don't know. Didn't work for me on a 1 person sloop. Wanted to invite a friend, but couldn't work out if that's possible.

Thanks, I think SealedSeven is on the money here. Can't wait to play more this afternoon!

Loving the stories being told in this thread. This game really makes you want to share them. Rare really pulled off their initial vision.

I'm running Sea of Thieves and my system does not meet the requirements.
It's only 540p, but the fps is solid.

I had fun after my bf figured out what we were supposed to be doing

Joined a big crew last night before bed, everyone else was asleep so was using a headset but no mic. Got locked in jail because I wouldn't talk lol. Eventually they let me out when I danced played music and said I was sorry.

Had fun with them for a while but eventually all of them left so I was on a big ship full of chickens for some reason (no active missions). Another crew joined, I started chucking the chickens off the side of the ship and I hear they scream at me for being a chicken murder...

Again I find myself in jail on at the time my own ship...

Was hella fun!

So, it appears that achievements are working now on PC. But, I am not getting them retroactively. I get them as I do them over again. For example, I just did my 5th Order of Souls quest, but it counted as my first for achievement purposes.

Oh? Ohhhhhhh.... cool. I didnt realise. He can have the crappy monitor then too! Win win situation!

Thanks for the advice.

Just here to help. Glad you guys had fun. I'm waiting to play with my friends this weekend it seems. :( only was able to play with one of my friends on launch day. Been playing solo and enjoying it. It's really nerve racking when you stop at sunken ship and hope no one is around.

Have someone made progress in the commendation for selling Stronghold Skulls (Order of Souls)? I have sold like 4 and it says 0/20 :(
