I 100% understand all of the criticism leveled at this game. It's currently too expensive for $60 and could really use more to do. That said, holy crap do I just love this game. I find it very relaxing to sail around and hunt for treasure or skeletons. I didn't go into this wanting some high investment progression based game. I have that in spades with Monster Hunter World. I've mostly played solo and I've found it to be a great way to just unwind as it's been a really stressful run of days with work. Also, spending time with my friends in this has just been very nice. However, me saying 'this is why I like this game!' is not the point of this post.
Friends, I have a story.
Last night my friends and I gathered for our first voyage as a full crew and upon loading in the first thing we see is an active skeleton fort. What followed was numerous naval engagements with multiple crews, desperate defenses against hordes of angry skeletons, and trickery and deception. Three crews of ships fought over this skeleton fort for about two hours, none of us seemed to be able to gain a permanent foothold on this accursed rock. BUT! as things seemed to get their most dire, our ship returning from being sunk with only two of us still at the fort, and surrounded by skeletons and hostile pirates, the skeleton boss finally spawned. We hatched a desperate plan.
We killed the pirate boss as fast as possible, retrieved the key and then hid it so the other crews could not find it! We waited for our ship to return and piled on and sailed away, leading the remaining galleon on a wild goose chase which ended with us acting like we had turned in all of the treasure at a nearby outpost. When the enemy galleon left, we drove them away with the power of music, my crew sailed under the cover of night back to the skeleton fort to retrieve our prize!
With our treasure collected, we ended our nights adventure by sailing off the edge of the map playing ride of the Valkyrie in the crows nest as we sank into the waves.
This game's got problems, but ya'll this games pretty ok.
