CopySNES (Cart/sram dumping!!!)

  • All official v4.5 fixes plus:
  • Added CopySNES. Lets you dump carts/save RAM to the SD card. Files are placed into /COPYSNES/. The directory is created if it does not exist. See the text file for full instructions.
  • Star Ocean 96mbit works now.
  • Changed menu operation so that if you enter the settings menu in the file browser, it can be exited back to the file browser by hitting select (or backing all the way out using the back button).
  • Changed file browser operation so that if you attempt to back out of it, you get warned that the running game will be ended and you cannot save any more.
  • In JB mode, tools menu appears on the main menu which has CopySNES and cheat codes.
  • Cheat codes is moved into the file browser settings menu.

I've dumped a couple carts (Super Mario World, Super Mario All Stars, and Sim City), and while it's creating srm files, my save data doesn't seem to carry over when running it off the SD card. Save data still shows up when running it off the cart, so the battery is still good. Am I missing something?

I haven't tried the new functionality, so I don't know where it's putting the saves, but is it putting them in the right place for the system to read the saves? Also, unless the saves are in the SD2SNES save folder, I believe it's looking for .sav rather than .SRM. at least, that's how it was with the first jailbreak firmware.

Dumping carts is pretty amazing.

I only have one SD card so I am going to have to wait until some kind of definitive final firmware before even considering making the jump. Would be nice to just dump all my carts onto a card even if I prefer running them as god intended, so to speak.

So if im reading this correctly you can dump cart saves to SD card and then play off SD card using the same saves? So if cart battery dies its not an issue of lost saves

Regardig saves on custom firmware.
I updated to the latest version today.
Now my Final Fantasy and DKC saves are not working. I start the games but no saves. Zelda works though. I can see save files in the save folder.
Is there a ways to get the saves to work again?

Will test this out tonight but I'm really keen on backing up my saves from my old carts. Anyone know if we can do that?

Edit: nvm, just seen it in the release notes

I've updated my JB and my games and saves on the SD card still work as they did on the prior JB.
I will be testing cart dumping and cart save data later.
For your cart save data, did it specify that once the cart and save data are dumped that, you should play off of SD from then on? Or that cart play with SD save was a thing?

So I just backed up my JP SUPER MARIOWORLD (the name that automatically came up - though it gives you the option to edit it prior to backing up). I got two files: One was the "SUPER MARIOWORLD.smc" and the other was "SUPER MARIOWORLD.srm". I made a copy of the 2kb .srm file because all of the saves made by the Super NT are .sav files. So I changed the .srm extension from was generated from the cart and placed the .smc in the ROM folder and the .sav in the save folder.
It loaded just fine from the SD card. I checked my cart and it played like normal. I didn't see anyway to play off the cart while using the save file on the SNT nor is there a way to reverse copy it to the original cart (which would be nice if we wanted to back up the save, replace a battery, and reload the save back to the cart).
The whole copy process took roughly as long as it takes to load a ROM off of the SD card (which for Super Mario World is nearly a second or two).

Great! glad to know its working properly, thanks buddy for testing this. Yep a upload feature would be good, but this is a nice start.

They are not working from the cart or from the sd card? When you dump it isn't going to put the save file where it needs to be so maybe you had a Zelda save already in there?

Good point. The copysnes program/feature puts them both (smc and srm) in the copysnes directory that require manual copying to the primary ROM folder and SAVE folder (and possibly an extension change of .srm to .sav but I haven't tried a .srm in the save folder yet).

So the Super NT is now like its own built-in Super UFO? That means translation patches for Japanese games!

So you literally only have to change the extension from .srm to .sav for the saves to work from SD card?

That would be great news. Dumped all my carts today but did not test the saves until now.

And move them to the SAVES folder if it doesn't put them there by default, yes. You can see my instructions for moving saves from SNES classic to the SNT here. Skip all the FTP business as it doesn't apply, but the renaming stuff should all be applicable.

Ok, updated my save copy guide to include a little mini guide for moving the save. Quoted here for convenience. Once you do it one time it is really simple, but just in case anyone gets confused hopefully this helps.

CopySNES Dumping / Saves
When you use the CopySNES function in the jailbreak it will dump the ROM and SRAM into the \COPYSNES\ folder.

SCAn8X9.png

If you try and run the game immediately after dumping it your save will not work. You need to move and change the file extension. Personally I like adding a little tag as well to make it clear it is the ROM that I dumped. You can name it anyway you like just make sure they both match.

NOTE: Don't miss the change from .srm to .sav, this is important.

ycR8X16.png

Now you just need to move the save file over to the SAVES folder. In my case it would end up like this:

\SAVES\SNES\Uniracers (SoH).sav

Ripped all my carts to the Super NT using latest JB firmware..
Super Street Fighter 2 won't load from SD :(
And now you understand all the fuss around "good" "clean" dumps. Possible the cart wasn't sitting quite right, or needs a scrubbing. Try dumping it again and if still bad bust out the q-tips and get to work. If all else fails can compare hashes to no-intro and see if it matches or not.

I'm fairly certain the answer is 'no', but I'm guessing there's no way to move save files from SD back over to the cart after the copy?

Gonna start actually playing something now that most of the bugs have been ironed out. Was gonna start playing Chrono Trigger but was waiting for the bugfix.

Save backup is super nice, can do it once in a while in case the battery in the cart dies.

Anyone have a commands list for the jailbreak? I can't seem to find any read me.

If you are playing a game, is there a button combination to get back to the menu?

Currently no. Someone did make the request here, which was closed because they don't take feature requests, but doesn't sound like it is an outright no so... very small chance it could happen? I'd like to see it just for the convenience with a battery swap.

Down+select brings the menu back up by default, there is a section that let's you customize it, I believe under System?

And when the sd menu is open you can hit start to bring up the settings.

Do we have any idea yet why kevtris has been silent on the topic of jailbreaks in general for the Super NT, and these ones in particular?

That's a shame, though expected. Still, supporting dumping carts is more than I thought the thing would get. Thanks for the info! =)

The 1080p settings (or 1200 maybe?) in the OP have been working great. I've temporarily given up on trying to do 720p with scalines, as I can't seem to get it to look right.

I never expected SNES games to look so good, or to be so big. I have a 55 inch television. I grew up with these games on a 13 inch.
It's crazy.
They did a good job with sound.

If any more features get added, I'd like more enhancement features (like that true transparency implementation). Improved audio, fan translation support, or even forcing frame rate increases (for Star Fox, basically) would be cool.

Oh, and maybe more chip support if thats possible.

Or even Famicom support if Analogue doesn't feel like selling Nt Mini hardware anymore.

"Increasing" Star Fox's framerate also breaks the entire game, as essentially all animations and logic are tied to it. It would be no different than playing Star Fox while pressing the fast forward button.

I think kevtris also stated that he does not plan to implement anything that wouldn't be true to how the original Super Nintendo work, so don't expect fan translation support or "improved" audio (though I hear the Super NT already samples at a higher bit rate than the original SNES). Though you might want to look into the jailbroken firmware releases for things like ROM dumping, which would potentially allow you to use translation patches provided you have a JPN cart (dump ROM, apply patch, play via SD). An SPC player was proposed among other things, but I don't know if that should be considered a promise.

He's an official employee of Analogue now. There are certain subjects he's not at liberty to discuss. For instance he documented the entire process of creating the super nt, but Analogue won't allow him to release the footage. He also can't discuss anything to do with the analog adapter for the Super NT that Analogue mentioned in February. The JB firmware obviously falls under this umbrella.

I think the bigger issue is time. There have been a few things mentioned to him on the discord that are feasible, but he just doesn't have the time to do them even if he had the inclination. He obviously has his private list of things he wants to implement if he has the time. Hopefully we get as many of those features as time permits.

My first assumption was my cart is dirty.
So I deleted the ROM (which AFAIK you can't do on the Super NT?) and ran the cart directly. Worked fine. Then I re-ripped the cart and... Still doesn't boot from SD. :(

I am a FPGA developer and this is really cool. Would love to have the source code and try to get it to work on my Stratix 7 development board. If they have not used any Altera black boxes it should be possible to do.
I love that they don't even try to explain what a FPGA is xD I been working with them for about 10 years and the hardest part is explaining what they are to someone not in the field.

I understand how that would affect a game. I would like to mess around with it regardless.

There already are features that aren't true to how the original Super Famicom functioned, like the hi res blending and sprite limit options.
If it already does the hardware perfectly, I see no reason not to add a few tweaks just for experimentation's sake.

According to analogues Facebook page it appears that round 3 pre orders go live in May!
Super Nt Restocks and Nt mini Availability
Super Nt (black only) in stock and shipping now, limited quantities

There are a limited amount of Black Super Nt's in stock- shipping now. Once these are gone, it will be a few months before any additional Super Nt's are back in stock and shipping again.

We're producing more Super Nt's now

We didn't anticipate how incredible the response to Super Nt would be and we're currently sold out of all other variants (Classic, SF, and transparent). Once we saw the response, we began producing more units. We've been doing our best to keep up with demand. This production will be ready to ship this summer sometime. For the time being, black Super Nt units are in stock and shipping now- please note they are available in limited quantities.

We will open pre-orders when we have a more accurate ship date

We understand that people are frustrated about not being able to immediately get the Super Nt variant they'd like, and for that we apologize. We will open pre-orders for this next production run once we have a more accurate ship date. Pre-orders will become available sometime in May.

Nt mini is currently unavailable

Nt mini is an incredibly difficult and time consuming product to manufacture. We're currently focused on Super Nt and we don't have the manpower to produce another run at this time. Nt mini unfortunately requires a borderline unreasonable amount of oversight from our best people. We appreciate your understanding and please know we're bummed we can't make it available at this time, too.
