What is MetalEra's favorite Metal Ballad?

Let us "Church" it up in here a bit, so to speak

that's probably the last ballad I had on my phone and I pretty much played that one over and over when I got that CD. Other than that I couldn't name more than a handful probably. I really like Testament - The Legacy and Return to Serenity. Fade to Black??? lol.

It is a masterpiece for sure, their best song.

Return to Serenity is better with the acoustic version found here:

I love The Ritual but the version on there sounds strange and not as powerful

that is a great rendition and I'd agree that it has a greater melodic quality to it with a better performance from Billy, but the original is kind of ingrained in my head at this point heh. I think it's the solo and reverb drenched, dreamlike production.

oh yeah Megadeth - In My Darkest Hour and even though it's just the intro basically, the first part to Anthrax - Armed and Dangerous is amazing.

I sounds so muddy to me especially compared to the rest of the production of the Ritual which is brilliant. My favorite ballad from Testament has to be Trail of Tears from Low, that song is so good

I'd probably pick something from Iced Earth quite honestly. They have a few ballad type tunes I like. The Metallica and Megadeth tunes are way overplayed in my house so anything I picked would need to be something different. Metal Church isn't a band I have ever followed and Testament was a 90's thing for me. For whatever reason, I haven't felt like exploring their albums. I used to have a few back in the day, but they just don't seem to catch my ear these days. Will have to look through my library and see what comes up.

Song of the Day

Testament (CA) - Disciples of the Watch

just 'cause. The Legacy is Testament's best album but Disciples is maybe the most evil, ripping track between their first two. Also featured is another Skolnick solo for the ages.

Digging the Testament chat, I'm going to see them later this week and I don't know them too well, but enjoyed the stuff posted on this page. They're being supported by Annihilator (CA) and Vader (PL) if anybody wants to throw some song recs for them my way too!

First two Annihilator albums, Alice In Hell and Never, Neverland are classics. The rest of their catalog is not great. I actually liked how their modern lineup sounded (despite songs being unremarkable) but they lost Dave Padden on vocals and now it's just Jeff on vocals which isn't great. I'd still love to see them but Annihilator doesn't come to the states.

Vader is fuckin incredible, Slayer with hyperblasts. Most of their albums are great, check out De Profundis, Litany, Welcome To The Morbid Reich. Very consistent band

Yeah pretty much this.

I'm a big fan of annihilator but their output is hit or miss album wise post Neverland. King of The Kill is pretty solid, as is Criteria for a Black Widow. I am a fan of their 2007 and 2010 albums too, but I think Dave Padden was really underrated, great live

there was supposed to be a vinyl issue of the Sunlight Studios sessions for The Ultimate Incantation, but it never came to fruition. More people need to know it exists, so there can be more beggars. Could have been a legendary album. The version as we know it is cool but I always thought it sounded less than deadly.

anyways, yeah Vader are cool. When I heard Litany the first time I was taken aback by the drums.

I think the 2010 self titled is their best since the old albums, but there's still some really bad songs on there (25 Second To Die, yuck)

I thought Padden fit them well, he had a unique voice that suited the material. A lot of people would complain that he sounded awkward but like.......listen to Waters' vocals. Yeesh. Everything I've heard of their last one is missing the mark pretty hard. Feels bad because you can tell Jeff is trying to recapture the old stuff and it's just not happening.

His vocals on the 1986 demo though. WHEW. He actually promoted the last album like he sounded the same and it's like yeah Jeff this Mustaine wannabe shit isn't cutting it

I used to have the New Order, Practice What You Preach and Souls of Black way back in the day. Adjusts old man suspenders...saw Testament with CoC and Maiden on the Fear of the Dark tour. I don't really remember any of their music these days though. Maybe I should go back and pick up the first few albums just to revisit them. I have listened to their newer stuff but none of it ever grabbed me enough to stick with it. I believe they are coming with Slayer later this year so I will probably grab some of their stuff to refresh myself on them.

Annihilator is a mixed bag for me. I love some of their tunes, not so much albums. Like Knight Jumps Queen is one of my favorites of theirs but the albums tend to have some meh songs otherwise. I had them on Facebook but Waters feeds were kind of annoying and cheesy so I cut them off. Not sure which vocalist I like, but they have had some decent ones. Their songs about mental illness are definitely the better end of their ideas and whichever vocalist did the insano singing I liked.

Never heard this version! I also loved this song and the album. It also weird that I kinda left them in the 90s as well but I did pick up a 2 CD/DVD set that focuses on newer stuff recently and I'm excited to see them live for the first time on the Slayer tour.

Aborted's next album TERRORVISION is out September 21st

When everything clicks for them they're one of my favorite bands, but the last couple of releases haven't done much for me. Global Flatline was amazing, The Necrotic Manifesto was ok, Termination Redux EP was amazing, Retrogore was ok, the Bathos EP they just put out was bad. They promise this is more Bathos so ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Aborted to me is Suffocation x Carcass x very fast. I understand putting out the same thing over and over is tiring but the experimentation from that formula makes me pretty much instantly uninterested.

Why did I never know there was a metal community here on Era or even on the old site? Has this always been here and my dumb ass just never noticed it? I got a hair up my ass while listening to Belakor and remarking about how I have absolutely no friends that are into metal anymore ever since I moved across the country so I decided to randomly search resetera for a thread on metal and....well, here you guys are. I feel dumb lol.

New Necrophobic track:

Digging this a lot, loving the Raining Blood riffage.

I just found out about them a few days ago, and was ready to reject them out of hand due to both the generic band name, and near indesciperable logo that meets the status quo. The first track I heard was "Tsar Bomba". Initially I thought they sounded heavily influenced by Amon Amarth (although given their legacy, maybe it's the other way around), but as the track progressed, it made me think otherwise. The album overall has a lot of riffs that remind me of both Slayer and Mercyful Fate (of all bands), although I think the first two tracks might be the strongest overall, but most of the album is pretty good.

Also, just because...

Song of the Day

Leviathan - The Idiot Sun

Leviathan's debut album is absolutely incredible. This is my favorite track from that album. It's just a masterpiece of suffocating atmosphere. It's actually pretty incredible how much quality there is in Leviathan's discography considering the sheer volume of releases. I would put Leviathan as a top 3 BM band for me.

I was just listening to this At the Gates album for the first time and the main riff for World of Lies came on. I swear I've heard this before but I can't place it. Anybody know if it was remade or if that riff was used by some other band? It's the riff like 2 seconds in, right past the intro bit.

vouch. Top 3 in the scope of all black metal is quite the designation, but shouldn't be considered controversial at all. When it comes to USBM, no lies detected. I go back forth with the debut and Massive Conspiracy.

it's kind of a meme that metalcore as it is most commonly recognized today is a complete and unabashed derivation of Slaughter of the Soul and the like, so I would say it has been remade a million times over at the least.

Could be. This is bugging the hell out of me. That riff was in something I listened to a lot years ago, but I just can't quite remember what. I thought maybe Arch Enemy or Bolt Thrower but only ever owned one of each of those and in a quick run through, did not find it. The song isn't familiar but that riff sure is. Maybe its just a figment of the ole imagination.

It reminds me of something Amon Amarth would write. That drum beat is definitely familiar to me.

KRALLICE-TOURV2.jpg

anyone else have any big shows they've been looking forward to?

Obituary, Pallbearer, Skeletonwitch, Dust Bolt.

Slayer, Lamb of God, Anthrax, Behemoth, Testament

Slaughter to Prevail (primarily because they are playing my town and we don't get a lot of shows here). Born of Osiris is also playing here but its the same day as Slayer.

Damn...Behemoth is on your leg of Slayers tour? We get Napalm Death which I'm not a fan, but will still be cool to see them.

I've got quite a few shows coming up..

4/21 - Nightwish (20th Anniversary Tour)
5/12 - Kamelot / Delain / Battle Beast
6/2 - Obituary / Pallbearer / Skeltonwitch / Dust Bolt
6/14 - Insomnium
6/15 - Slayer / Anthrax / Lamb of God / Behemoth

Pretty sure that's all I have lined up until ProgPower in September. Really looking forward to seeing Insomnium. Kamelot's new album will be released next month, so they'll probably play quite a few new songs, and they always put on a good show. Nightwish should be really cool as well, since they're playing a good mix of songs across their whole discography. Will be nice hearing some of those older songs with Floor.

My upcoming concerts...

Malokarpatan (Covenant) this Thursday

The Malokarpatan show in DC was ridiculously good. I was weary on how they would sound live but they brought it! I hope they come back around soon.

Upcoming for me:
Tomorrow: Sanguine Eagle / Radiator Greys / Sickdeer
4/2: Primitive Man / Spectral Voice / Ilsa / Genocide Pact
4/18: Russian Circles
4/29: ZUD / TOMB / Snakefeast / Salvaticus
5/6: Whoredom Rife / Voarm / Veiled / Worthless
5/10: Demilich / Blood Incantation / Artificial Brain / Scorched / Cemetery Piss
