God, the HBO Go site sucks so much... During the entire episode it kept replaying the last 2-3 seconds every 30 seconds or so. Even restarted my laptop and nothing helped. Episode was meh, Jian Yang was the star tonight.
it worked fine for me.
but yeah, Jian Yang was great. that letter he wrote as Erlich was very convincing.
and Richard's "speech" near the end, in front of all the new hires, had me cracking up for some reason.

glad it's back. not expecting much. the show's been the same shit since season 1 story-wise.

Nice start to the season as far as setup. The running gag of them admiring their new coders was consistently amusing, and this looks like it changes the "failure always" setup without making them into rich assholes who cannot be sympathized with.

From the preview of the next episode it looks like it all starts to go to shit immediately, though.

While the structure of the episode felt very samey I still liked it. Jared and Richard both tripping over that power outlet got me early.

And Gavin's assistant being hired back and welcomed only to be fired again like two minutes later was great

Thank god Westworld is coming and HBO has some movies I haven't seen. I'd have serious buyers remorse paying $15 a month for more of that. I will wait to see impressions over the next few weeks before watching another episode. I barely laughed after the first scene, cringed a few times and ended up hoping Richard fails and Gavin wins. Hard to justify spending my time on that. Why make Richard continue to look like a bigger and bigger asshole? And I found most of the Jian-Yang and Laurie jokes more sad than funny.

Holy shit that end.
Slice box sounded like Moviepass.

I love this new conniving Richard. The only way to survive in this industry.

They better move on this season, because I'm getting tired of reset after reset of their company

I always like how they update the opening credits every season. One thing I saw in this one was the Facebook logo changed to Russian for a moment which was pretty funny.

And Gavin's assistant being hired back and welcomed only to be fired again like two minutes later was great

That was hilarious.

I always think the guy that plays Gavin would make a great Vince McMahon. His performance and mannerisms remind me a lot of him.

Ehhh, okay episode, but not really a great hook for a new season IMO. The whole office space/hiring/Box 2.0 plotlines all feel like retreads, because they are.
Jian Yang's letter was the highlight for me.

Loved it, Jared's dark humor continues to make me love his character. I can't wait until the series ends and we can finally piece his entire life together.

Richard is becoming Gavin but i'm okay with it, sociopath Richard is best Richard.

"Your inability to make us choose coders faster is a failure of leadership" god damn i love gilfoyle.

Excited to see how Jian Yangs subplot goes this year, i feel like all his mean comments about Erlich are the writers / directors subtly saying how much they hate TJ Miller.

Why did Richard took all of the 50 employees or is presented as an issue

like he can just fire the ones he doesn't need and trim number since he doesn't have a ceo he needs to haggle with

they really needs move beyond the "New startup -> self screwed -> pivot -> new startup -> self screwed" loop...it's getting tiring..

Also, fucking Richard needs to grow up....you can only be that awkward geek for so long.....it's funny for the 1st 2 season. It's getting really annoying now.

Also, i don't understand why is Jian Yang's still in it after Bachman is no longer in the story. He exist to annoy Bachman...so what's his point now?

Also, either monica and richard needs to get it on or just not. Again...this type of 'romantic tension' dragging for so long is getting on my nerves.

That said...having Gavin Belson doing stupid CEO shit is still funny though..

also, is bighead gonna be in this season?

When doing a buyout, most have it such that you have to negotiate terms to keep a certain number of employees for a certain length of time, no one would agree to a buyout if it meant immediate layoffs, you would have to be a pretty immoral CEO to do something like that. The two old ceos at least got paid for the acquisition so they don't care about having jobs after, they got cash.

The Jian Yang filling Erlich's house with Chinese dudes skit was my favorite.
Gilfoyle has been solid. Martin Starr was a little more animated on the recent Comedy Bang Bang podcast too.

The way they add drama is really lazy in my opinion. It always feels like whenever things are looking up they just have the worst case scenario happen to derail their plans. Then their situation gets so bad it looks like it's all over, and them something miraculous happens and gets them out of trouble. It's just this constant roller coaster.

Like the one guy that knows this important secret not only is at the one place they happen to be conducting their meeting, but he also happens to bring up the one piece of info that screws them over, without any reason for bringing it up in the first place.

I still find the show funny at times, but I could care less about anything that's happening story wise.

I've always found the idea that they ever need to succeed odd. It's like saying the Bluth Company needed to build more houses. I'm not in this for narrative progression, just funny interactions between absurd caricatures of tech people. Of course they need to find fresh ways to fail if they're going to do it forever.

Its just not the same without TJ MIller. I just can't bring myself to be interested anymore. It had a good run for me though.

I thought it was pretty clear that he's going to end up being a 10% shareholder and his interactions with them over that in the future will be the point.

I agree that he worked best as an annoyance to Bachman though.

Why should Richard be likeable? Because he's not, and that's fine.

I was a fan of the episode. I thought it was pretty funny which is what I'm going to a comedy for. I loved The Stallions. It'll suck when one breaks their leg.

decent episode. nice to see the doctor back for a minute; funny character.
I wonder if that's the end of Jian Yang's arc. like, Erlich definitely isn't coming back so I don't know where they'd go with him

Up until last episode, I always thought we would learn that Jian Yang doesn't actually have an accent. Like he just played it up really strongly to fuck with Elrich. I think Jian Yang will stay on though, since he owns part of Pied Piper.

JFC I've been saying this for months with no one concurring. It hasn't done that to me lately but I seriously had to take to illegal streams cause the site worked so poorly doing that exact thing. I used it on Firefox but when I switched to chrome it did the same thing. Now either one just stutters constantly and audio gets out of sync but at least it doesn't freeze and replay audio. No excuse for a streaming service this large to have a site that's worse than YouTube

I liked this episode quite a bit.

Liked the part where Richard kept saying "you guys" in front of the girls, though it would have been funnier had they not spelled out the joke earlier through Jared

Constantly getting annoyed with this show's "something good just happened....but wait" formula is getting tired, I mean we're in the 5th season so I shouldn't be expecting anything else.

It's still annoying though.

I said earlier.
The show better move on this season, but it's been stuck with season 1 premised.

Show seems like a comedy sitcom like Seinfeld or Friends.

They're definitely stuck in a higher gear now. No longer teetering on the brink of destruction. But that also means that Hooli's going to be going after them harder, so the level of threat will step up.

Big fan of this show but had no idea the new season had started until right now. I feel like there wasn't a ton of promotion this time.

This show sucks without TJ Miller, I don't know how many times I can watch them build up a company and fuck it up again. It's getting repetitive and predictable.
