The working Myst book is cool but you wil open it a few times... sit on a shelf... battery eventually runs dry.

Years later you open it again and the screen in dead. Easy to replace the battery?

It's definitely cool but very nick nacky.
I agree. I was just briefly entertaining the idea. I've gone for the Bookmaker tier.

Although what could these goodies be?
And if you connect a USB cable (not included) to the book, you might just discover some other digital goodies we've included!

Never played it. Does it hold up?

Edit:

Just saw its a book form. Shit I need this.

The first one is weird: you don't know what to do in this strange island, you start doing things based on what you see and what you read, you travel through Ages (worlds) and they are the weirdest in the series, you start to collect all the pieces together the more you play, and understanding what's going on.

Riven is clearly the best one (and probably the most difficult one)

I think Exile and Revelations are the two that still feel relatively modern today. (both games guide you a little at least at the beginning)

URU is okay: i wasn't a fan of the artstyle (from pre-rendered with real actors to full 3D but they went for a realistic approach in 2004), i liked the concept behind Relto though and the idea of finally exploring D'ni, some cool puzzle here and there.

I've never played Myst V, i've spoilered myself the ending cause i needed to know and honestly it didn't impress me.

Only worth it if they upres the games to look beautiful on modern screens. I can play the Myst games just fine. You can even buy the Myst Anniversary set on Amazon in DVD form.

Oh man, missed this thread the first time around. Myst and Riven are the only two I've played, but this would be a great reason to play the rest.

As a teenager that fucking marble puzzle in Riven still haunts my dreams

A game that has sadly been largely lost by the masses as time has gone on......

This is a day one purchase for me!

to be fair, that puzzle is a good 70% of the entire game

i never actually solved it on my own until just a few years ago, as a teenager i never would have stood a chance

Little OT, but for a puzzle game in same period and genre. Have a look Rama. Based of Arthur C Clarke's novels of the same name.

The base 8 or 12 number puzzles were what made nightmares.

I had 4 of them perfect, but the last one I only had a general idea. Had to keep placing it one space away until it stuck.

I just noticed that the sound that plays when you enter an Age is almost identical to the one when you enter a new area in Bloodborne.

Absolutely brilliant news. This should show that there's still plenty of market potential for a new Myst game, even though Obduction went somewhat under the radar.

It's not very accessible: in an era where you can totally play a game like Myst on your phone, or portable consoles, they should follow that direction and making these kind of games available to the mass audience, instead of going full niche with VR and demanding specs, and even if you don't bother VR, the minimum requirements to play that game are already a decent hardware:
  • CPU Intel i5-2500 equivalent or better
  • 8 GB di RAM
  • GeForce 660 GTX w/1GB / AMD 7700 series w/1GB equivalent or better
  • 20 GB di spazio disponibile
  • For VR: NVIDIA 970 or AMD 480 (equivalent or greater)
I'm not sure how many Myst fans have a PC powerful enough to run Obduction. I know many people who played tons of point and click adventure games in the 90s/early 00s now they are gaming only on mobile with titles like "The Room".

Plus on Obduction, i haven't played the game (cause my PC can't run it), but i remember reviews being stupidly harsh on this game, saying things like "games like Myst are dead: too complicated, play something like The Witness instead which is the natural evolution of that genre" which is not true. That unique vibe Myst gives you still holds up.

I've just had a look at the Kickstarter page and it's already reached double the target amount within 48 hours. Whilst the surge will trickle off in the next few days as it does for all Kickstarters, hopefully this results in enough extra funds to get the Mac versions sorted in a timely manner too.

Yeah I've just seen. Pretty incredible.

Just looking at that classic top view of the Myst island floods my brain with nostalgia. I still remember my brother got it on his 3DO back in the day and we were sucked in. Taking notes in a marble notebook so we didn't forget certain things. This was back when the internet wasn't really a thing so you HAD to take notes instead of just lazily looking up a FAQ. Trying to figure out what those box/lever things were on the main island, the little ship model in the center, the dentist chair with the star alignment thing, the atmospheric music.

The game also creeped me the hell out. Seeing the two brothers stuck in the books gave me the creeps. Also the music in that underground chamber right at the start with the message in the pool scared the fuck out of me. I couldnt play the game by myself because it frightened me too much. I remember there was a puzzle in the ship world where you go deep underground to this circular panel with buttons all the way around it. Only one button would turn the power on I think, but if you hit the wrong one, the loud ass buzzer would go off and all the lights would go out, making you try to find your way all the way back to the top and out. Get the shivers thinking about that.

Good god those first two games were ridiculously good. I'm trying to decide whether to get the 49 or 99 backer option. I like having physical backups that I can install somewhere else if needed(like a friends house) but hmm.

I loved taking notes. It's so cool opening up the game case of Myst and seeing my scribbly notes from a playthrough 10 years ago. It's funny seeing how my mind worked.

I only ever got into the story of the first game, and the very beginning of Riven. How does the plot progress throughout the other games? I loved the story with the sons and the red and blue books in Myst.

I never did beat this. My friend played through it a lot though, and I was usually dumbing around with Rise of the Triad as a dog or something lol.

It would've been nice if it made it into the Video Game Hall of Fame for its 25th, I think it made it to the finalists pool like... maybe twice. I know for sure at least once, think it was last year.

The story is interesting throughout all the games, but just keep in mind it's not always told directly to you and you have to discover it through journals and world exploration.

No LCD screen into paper. No buy.

So, are you in now?

The switch won't be powerful enough to run this, will it

The most recent game in this collection is from 2005. The Switch could absolutely run it, but it'd have to be ported, and there are definitely some difficulties. Storage would be the biggest issue, I think. Myst, Riven, Exile, and Revelation are all pre-rendered, and that's a pretty sizable chunk of data altogether. End of Ages and Uru are real-time 3D, but I suspect it would be a huge expense of resources to get the engine that runs them working on the Switch. Also, Uru's control scheme would be incredibly tedious without a mouse and keyboard.

It's worth noting that the DS and 3DS ports of Myst are pretty terrible.

Yep. Had no 3D whatsoever, as far as I know it was the DS version on a 3DS cart.

The DS version is especially fun because it swaps back and forth between the original pre-rendered images and screenshots of the realtime 3D version of the game. Console ports of Myst have been super sketchy, I count myself very lucky that my first Myst experience was on the Saturn, which was a pretty solid version.

Oh okay. As always I didn't read. I assumed it would be an altogether new Myst with crazy spec for PC.

Of course the switch can run it, and it's a touch screen it would be perfect!

Saturn is also where I first played, and never finished Myst

the locations for each marble aren't so bad (the game basically gives them to you at the mapping island), it's the color part that fucked me up

Correct, but Riven and End of Ages haven't been updated to work properly on any modern OS, and Exile and Revelation have just been totally unavailable because Ubisoft.
Riven HAS, though really recently.

SCUMMVM, the point and click interpreter emulator added full support for Riven last December, and the GOG (and not Steam) version takes full advantage of it. And if you have the original discs you can run it with SCUMMVM as well.

Okay, yes, but for people who don't want to be told "Yeah, this works great, if you jump through the hoops of this third party software."

I love SCUMMVM, but sometimes you just want to click on the Steam icon and have it work.
