Just about every C8 owner on AVSforum is reporting massive improvements to panel uniformity, surprised there isn't more excitement here.

XKhrkRT.png

blu-ray.com updated their specs section to include what type of HDR is on the disc, and whether it's a 4K DI or upscaled 4K. That's handy!

Some of these catalog 4K releases make me smile. Not sure who asked for Knowing in UHD/Dolby Vision.

I would have asked for it! Movie is craaaaazy interesting and then completely and entirely falls apart in the last fifteen minutes. It's great. The audio portion of that review sounds awesome.

Wait, this is basically Inception at this point. Can I post the gif I made for that "ambiguous endings are lazy" thread that got locked before I could?

Idk what that is but you should definitely post it

Don't front my man, your heart is so set on that 85" you'll probably cave and get the 900F when it goes on sale. :p

Haha I need a 65" to replace the TV in my living room (Plasma on it's last legs) anyway, so I am going to stay strong and stick to this plan. I want the 85" to last me until the next big tech (8K mLED)

Some cool demos from the new Vizio TVs

The guy even says it's not quite OLED but that it's close. No risk of burn in + 2000 nits. I cannot freakin wait for QLED or MicroLED proper. We are getting very close.

I can confirm my panel has great uniformity. I just received my 55" C8 earlier today. The panel is gorgeous. I have only done some minor testing and playing with settings so far. You have to keep in mind I coming from a 42" 1080p Sony LCD. The input lag difference in something like Dragon Ball FighterZ is blowing me away. I had no idea how bad it was on my old set.

HDR is as impressive as I had hoped in what I have tried so far. Horizon Zero Dawn, Uncharted 4. As far as movies: FandangoNow for Thor Ragnarok which looked great. I do not notice any loss of brightness/contrast going to gaming HDR mode but don't have an old OLED set so unsure if that's something that's been resolved.

If there is something a complete television newbie can check out for you guys let me know.

Those are neat demos and I recommend Vizio TVs to friends and family, but there's no side-by-side comparison with OLED here for a reason. I find that Vizio's local dimming algorithm can be too aggressive. It's certainly inferior to Sony's higher sets. Content may look ok but then you see it on emissive or even another FALD LCD and it's suppressing highlights.

Honestly the main reason I don't game on my OLED.

I still have the Destiny 1 HUD burned in to my Panasonic plasma, all these years later.
While I don't have any IR or burn in issues with my B7, I decided years ago that I was happier having better image quality (Plasma) with some IR than I was with no chance of IR but always having an image I wasn't happy with (LED). The same is true for me now with OLED.

I felt the same until that Destiny HUD burned in. Paragon HUD too. I've been known to get deep into a single game and play for hundreds (in some cases thousands) of hours. Now I'll stick to tech that isn't at risk when gaming.

Of course, I do love my OLED. It lives I'm the media room though. Only used for TV and movies. :-)

Just switched from a ten year old 46" TV to a 2017 Vizio 65" Dolby Vision TV and I'm gobsmacked.

Only issue I'm having is the PS4 Pro doesn't seem to be able to output 4K and HDR at once and I don't know why. In settings if I turn HDR off Assassin's Creed Unity is 4K and if I turned it on the game switches to 1080p.

I think only some of the ports might be hdmi 2.0

Just downgraded my 2016 C6 to the "pre-dim HDR Game" firmware.

Tested on Ratchet and Clank and yes!! Absolutely no brightness change between HDR Standard and HDR Game. Looks and plays beautifully now! Never upgrading again.

If you flip back and forth between HDR Standard and HDR Game Mode, when playing a HDR enabled game, is there a difference?

04.31.20, correct? Unless it's different on a C6 (I'm on a B6).

So freaking glad that Vizio finally decided to use HDMI 2.0 in all of the damn ports this year. It's about damn time. That local dimming demo was dope. Come on TCL give us a media blowout before launch on the 6 series, I need a new tv for my gaming room so I can stop hogging up the 930e in the living room lol.

4.30.95 for the C6. Yeah they use different numbers.
I think yours is actually a post-dim FW. Check out the FW history here: http://www.lg.com/us/support-product/lg-OLED55B6P
I'm not 100% on the B6 though, but if it's like the C6, only the FWs with the introduction of HDR Game Mode and the one immediately afterward retain the higher light output. If the brightness goes down when switching and the settings are the same, then it's definitely post update.

Here's some pics. This was really hard to capture with camera. I locked the exposure to the lowest possible setting so that you can judge purely on light output.
I repeat, these pictures are purely to illustrate the light output. OLED light and brightness settings were the same between the two modes.

As you can see, the light output between HDR Standard and HDR Game are exactly the same on the old FW.
And changing Dynamic Contrast on the new FW doesn't do anything but hurt the picture. It doesn't get close to HDR Standard.

Blade Runner 2049 on 4K Blu Ray is an absolute treat for HDR and Atmos! For those looking for reference material to test out your new 4K TV and or Atmos setup check it out, especially if you enjoyed the movie. The colours of HDR and Atmos mix at home is impressing me more than it did when I saw it at IMAX, which makes no goddamn sense lol.

I've given up on the whole firmware thing tbh. I "downgraded" to 04.31.20 months ago and have been there ever since. And then I've read that the B6/C6 are different and that the dimness only applied to the C series. IDK. I just left it at the current FW level.

Just picked this up today from Best Buy! Haven't had a chance to watch yet.

It's all good. As you can see for me, it was sorely needed.
Just bothered the heck out of me anytime I played an HDR game.

I'm really thinking about jumping to OLED with the C7 this year since prices are falling since the c8 is releasing.

Anyone know any good deals for the lg c7 right now?

The B6 has never had a functioning bright HDR game mode. Anyway, I much prefer the older implementation of HDR game mode and am still really annoyed that LG hasn't given customers the option between a bright or dark HDR game mode. Yes there is more detail in the highlights with the new tonemapping but in doing so it sacrifices screen vibrancy, and I can assure you the dim picture output that the C6's give out with the new HDR game mode is not the intended look for HDR content. It's a side effect of OLED's and their limited screen brightness, by refusing to clip detail in highlights the screen isn't able to output an overall bright image resulting in the C6's case and incredibly underwhelming presentation in HDR. I've been much happier since downgrading and have been bewildered by LG's lack of a response to this problem.

I hope you aren't watching any 2.35:1 movies on that bad boy.

The original RTings test has shown that letterboxing is slower at causing burn-in than static logos, so watching 2.35:1 movies is probably less risky than playing games with static HUDs. It seems like these OLED panels have more difficulty compensating for uneven wear of individual subpixels within a single pixel than they do of compensating for uneven wear between two different pixels.

yeah great job having a picture quality demonstration on an awful quality, blurred, blown out 30FPS video. Could've shot better video of that on my iPhone 7 Plus by setting it to 60FPS.
