They were amazing works for their time. If there are enough quality of life improvements I'll be happy. I backed Shenmue 3 because I really want to see a conclusion to the story.

I also never played the game in Japanese so that option is exciting :)

Its actually easy to forget there isnt a proper way to really play this right now in a modern situation since DC is hella old now, and even the DC emulation for Shenmue is still sketchy. So its still good if its pretty simple port.

Ok people, look if you weren't playing this in 2000 you will probably never understand what this game was like. It had the most mind blowing graphics ever, never seen a world so detailed, hell I think most games still don't reach the level of detail these games have. It was like being in a real living world in a time where experiences like that were still new. Plus it's a badass martial artist simulator who lives his life, goes to work but when he has to kick ass he is all those awesome movie action stars rolled into one.

It's weird as hell. It's slow, it can be boring. Some of the best stuff is just going to an arcade and playing other sega games. And who cares I love it, they don't make weird shit like this anymore.

It truly felt like an adventure for me, back in the day trying to figure things out etc. What a game.

Yep. One less reason to hook up the old white console. The Dreamcast had an excellent library of games but most of them have managed to escape.

Still a few games trapped on there but Shenmue 1 isn't one of them.

not surprised with the announcement but to include PC as well was what gets me. I hope this opens up many more games from Sega / Atlus. Cheers!

As much as I love my Dreamcast.. I'm so happy I can finally retire it now. Not sure if I want to mess with the modern controls or not yet...been playing this game with it's tanky controls for about 18 years now.

Its highly likely if you played it back then you were equally not able to understand/appreciate the game.

I think for a game that came out in 1999 it's quite impressive.

Deadly Premonition reminded me of a Dreamcast game with its graphics and whatnot, but I would not say that Shenmue is similar to it in other way. It's definitely not a weird game like Deadly Premonition.

Shenmue still looks outstanding in high resolution:

Remember, this is a game that came out nearly 20 years ago.

I feel newer players might not like it since it's old and might play a factor on how much shenmue 3 is gonna sell, no? I mean the reason Shen3 is being made is the devotion of fans to want a closure, but with a whole new generation of gamers (it's been 17-18 years) i feel most might try to get into it and would just feel out to date, like when you play Goldeneye 64, the controls are horrendous. I haven't played the games so maybe im off base. Will you guys think the first two games are outdated ?

What are these games about?

What do you do?

What is the game play like?
Shenmue is a revenge tale. In the first game, you basically play the life of a teenager in 1980s suburban Japan. Shenmue 2 then takes you to Hong Kong; I only played the first disc of Shenmue 2 so I can't really speak on it much, but you'll mainly be exploring, talking to NPCs, and occasionally getting into fights. I believe the fighting system in Shenmue is actually based on Virtua Fighter. There's also QTEs, and vehicle sections where you'll be riding a bike and controlling a forklift.

Nice, I can finally play these games. I backed Shenmue 3 just based on how passionate people are about this series.

Figured I'd dump a few of my emulated DEMUL screens of the first game in here. Honestly, a resolution bump does a whole lot for the game's looks. This was at 3X internal resolution:

Seriously, people wondering about the age of these games, watch this:

This game is nearly 20 years old. It's insane that it holds up like this today. These are DCEmul video shots at 1080p in widescreen at 60 fps.

Shenmue is still gorgeous.

Yup, I still really like the look of the games, very lush and art direction is top notch. The highest resolutions I've played them at is 480p with the VGA box, and they looked great, can't wait to see how these versions will look.

Also, one thing I would like to see from a technical standpoint is getting rid of the pop-in, or fade-in of people and such.

Shenmue III will not close the story
I didnt know there was talks about more than one game, but what I meant actually wasn't about the story but something like to give fans the love back, like to make one more game, not to finish something that started but to end long period of waiting to make it a reality (dont know if that make sense in english)

As someone who never had the opportunity to play the Shenmue games, but do enjoy the Yakuza games, I often see the latter described as spiritual successors. But, of course, by now Yakuza has blown way past Shenmue in terms of graphics and fluidity in gameplay. I plan to pick these up because, if nothing else, the settings seem interesting. I'm definitely curious about the double time travel of playing a remaster of an early 2000s game that's set in the late 80s. But, coming from Yakuza, what should I expect? What, if anything, is better about Shenmue at this point?

Consider Yakuza an evolution of Shenmue. You can expect similar controls to Yakuza (going by what they've said about "classic and modern controls") if you don't prefer tank. Hard to say what's better, because "opinions" and all that, but this was the genesis (at least the core concept) of "open-world" game design, and it went through multiple iterations of development and 2 platforms before release. There weren't any game that had this many unique NPC's in a fully 3D third person game, before. Oh, and another personal taste, is the music of Shenmue.

Just enjoy the game, the world of Shenmue, without comparing it to Yakuza. I'm actually curious, the other way around. I'd love to hear what a Yakuza player thinks of playing Shenmue for the first time, after having played the Yakuza games. That would give us a nice idea how well or bad the game has aged, because it's no use asking the fanbase as there's obviously going to be bias.

I'm 100000% looking forward to just hanging around Dobuita at night in the snow. Shenmue II is the better game, but the original exudes atmosphere.

Bob's Pizza and You Arcade, now in HD.

Climbing that road on the way back home on Yamanose, is going to give me some nostalgia boner for sure. Moreso for me, because I didn't have a VMU for the entire 1st year, Shenmue was the reason I bought a VMU for. It took around a month or so to get one because SEGA didn't officially launch the DC in my region, we had NTSC-J consoles coming in through the grey market, and a "boot disc" to play out of region games. I used to simply roam around and come back to the residence and turn off the console for an entire month from the day I got the game, till I got a memory card. LMAO.

Oh, and Kowloon and Guilin are going to be L I T

Now what classic do we focus on requesting? FF7, Crash, Shenmue all saved. Onimusha just had trademarks renewed.

Dino crisis?

Can't believe this generation so far at all. Like, holy fuck. Oni V better be fuckin' real, Capcom.

DC, well, if there's ANY time to reboot or continue a DC IV it's NOW. The dino craze in media rakes in those $$$, and the MonHun crowd would lap this up in the millions. The OG team is still intact at Capcom, including Takumi. Just leave Phoenix Wright to to a secondary team and get back to DC. This might be an unpopular opinion, but I loved DC 3's setting more than 2. Space was the best way to move forward, for a next generation console. They could still retcon the timeline or pull a DMC2. Retconning is easier as you could just pull off another alternate time theory as canon and proceed from there.

The only thing we're not gonna get ever, is HL3, and I wouldn't even be surprised if Valve pulls something crazy in the upcoming years, we've seen it all.

I feel that a lot of the "I AM CRYING" posts here never played the game and are just hyped on the other people hype and the Shenmue 3 meme (not that the game is a meme, but the urban legend about sequels that never were going to be made).

I expect disappointment on the first timers when they try the game because some of its stuff haven't aged well.

But I am happy for the fans.

My only real exposure to these games have been the Giant Bomb Endurance Run which made it seem not great. I would be willing to give it a shot given I finally have easy access to playing it.
