It is an enormous boon for Shenmue III to have this release finally happen.
The two games have never been released on the same platform in the US. The whole Shenmue experience was impossible for the average gamer to enjoy. Now it's on the most widely adopted console, and on Xbox and PC. Best of all worlds, and a perfect opportunity for newcomers to immerse themselves in this classic series.
It'll be much easier to make the case for a heavily story based game like Shenmue III now that the average gamer will have total access to the rest of the series.
Not every franchise starts out as a blockbuster success. Star Trek was cancelled for low ratings. It took years of insane fans starting conventions and showing their passion for the show to get it brought back as a movie series. It's been a cultural standard ever since.
Shenmue finally has a chance to reach anyone who has been curious. Yes, it is an older game. But it still so unique, I do not buy the line that "newcomers will hate it." I think it still provides something utterly unique in gaming history.
It is up to us in the Shenmue community to help people have a sense of what the game has to offer and to help newcomers have a great experience. Even just helping people here on ResetERA can set the kind of positive vibes that helped set off the chain reaction of social media positivity that recent games like Yakuza 0 have really benefited from.
We're getting everything we asked for, let's make the most of it.
