Man I'm really not sure if I should keep my X or not. I have one in the mail on the way right now but I' second guessing it do to not having a 4k screen.

How substantial will the jump be compared to a base PS4 at 1080p? I know there will be improvements but I'm not sure it will be worth the $500

You've only got 1 hole in each ear , so having multiple speakers next to our ears dies little to create any sense of auditory placement , our ability to judge where a sound from is down to our brains being able to judge subtle differences in the sounds bouncing off our ears.
Virtual surround calculates these subtle changes and applies a simulation to the studio you hear, so it sounds like it's coming from where it should be.
Most Surround sound headphones are just doing these calculations themselves, which is why they want an optical socket to carry the audio into the processor.

Xbox One has built in virtualised headphone surround that works with all games, just enable it in the settings. "Windows sonic"

There is also Dolby atmos , which performs the audio calculations not just around you, but above and below you also. This is a paid upgrade to enable this for the few games that currently support it. There is a 30 day trial, I think gears 4 and tomb raider work with atmos at the moment .

So in summary, you current headset will give you the surround sound you desire, but if you want to ditch that cable then there are plenty of wireless options , just don't pay extra "5.1" or "7.1" audio headphones.

There are a few officially supported headphones now that communicate directly with the Xbox, meaning no cables , adapters , dongles or power supplies

I thought the Dolby Atmos headphone app simulated Dolby on all games using stereo output.

Gears 3.......I don't know what to say. Holy shit it looks great. This machine is pure sorcery, because the improvement is incredible!

Also tried the enhanced Forza 7 demo. Damn that looks great.

Christ my download speeds are slow. 100 down fiber and I'm getting like sub 10mbps wired.

Are MS servers just getting hit really hard right now?

Called my isp and they said pinging my router and modem everything looked good.

Was hoping to play some stuff tonight but at this rate I'll be waiting until Friday.

Should i change dns settings or something? I've generally found googles are slower than my isps.

I'm awed at Perfect Dark (the n64 port). It feels like it's being rendered at 4K with HDR and sounds amazing too with full surround sound effects.

I have the 4K patches downloaded for Forza and Gears, but not for Cuphead. Is there a patch available for it or am I going crazy? Haha. I have the boxes checked in the settings and have restarted my system multiple times.

As far as I know, there's no enhancement patch. I don't think the art was mastered in 4K, at least based on the PC version.

I think the two most impressive games I've played on these new consoles is Wipeout Omega Collection and Forza 7. 4K/60fps really is the holy grail.

Cuphead is one of the few games where resolution doesn't matter because they put a filter over the graphics. The DF breakdown shows it.

Cant speak for the X, but i got my PS4 Pro before i got a 4K tv and was mildly disdapointed. Some games ran better sure but when i got my 4K tv .. ooh boy!

I would put that X money on the side and get a 4K tv first. Since im guessing you own a reg Xbox?

I almost panicked when I turned on my console for the first time and had no image. Turns out I plugged the HDMI cable into the wrong port, lol.

Anybody tested this as a UHD player? Specifically are discs that had issues on the One S still having issues on the X. I'd like to sell my standalone player and help offset the cost of this plus free up some space if I can.

Yeah I never had any issues on the s so I dunno. I had both a Samsung 8500 and the S at one point and returned the 8500 as I felt the S was fine even thought I was hamstrung a bit with no hdmi audio out. MS really should make that second hdmi bi-directional. Honestly though I can't tell the difference between bitstream and lpcm 5.1.

yup it's like someone just flipped a switch and all the HDD Fan noise went away. Are you sure you're not installing anything from the disc?
Lucky you! Glad to hear it though.

And positive. No disc in the system. Gears 4 finished downloading. Started to play it. (Other games still downloading in background.)

Can of course still hear the system. Now only while playing I can hear the fans actually whirring up and down up and down.

Wtf.

Seriously though MS needs to borrow whatever Sony does with disc game installs. I've had Tomb raider popped in for literally 2 hours now and can't play where I left off on my S. Ridiculous. I don't think it's installing anything off the disc whatsoever. It's just downloading.

MS did fix it though.
That's not normal! It was really fast for me.

I only have one weird quip so far, and it's HDR related. When I'm in an HDR enabled game, I up the backlight to max (20) on the KS8000 as RTings recommends. The games look great, but the Xbox UI elements look like they have all brightness removed, both the guide and toast notifications.

Not that big of a deal, but kind of odd.

Grabbed one!
Best Buy has extras.

Didn't do trade in. Will attempt to sell my 500GB OG xbone. If I can get 100 I will be thrilled.

My god this initial update is ridiculous. "Sorry it looks like our service isn't working right"

Not a good sign.

Does anyone else have an issue where HDR does not activate in games unless you toggle HDR off then on in the settings menu on the console? I have to do this every time I turn on the console when playing HDR games or else HDR does not activate. I did not have this problem on the Xbox One S with the same TV, a Vizio P50-C1.

Huge. Most people that I know don't have a 4k set and they love the "X". The Super Sampling and what it does for IQ on a 1080p set is pretty damn impressive. You will surely see the difference. Even compared the PS4 what you get is 1080p with little to no jaggies on the screen. Gears of War 4, Halo 5 just look amazing IQ wise. I know many friends that have good PC's with really good GPU's and they only have 1080p monitors and they use down sampling/super sampling to get amazing IQ, which is exactly what the "X" is doing.

I have had a similar issue but it's resolved by going to dashboard and then back to the game.

Had a scary/funny moment when doing the initial setup last night. I plugged in the console with my external to transfer everything. I was prompted to download the update. Download finished. Verifying finished. When it got to applying update, half way through my entire room surged and the power shut off for everything. I was scared that my console might have bricked, but I also laughed because "the power of Xbox One X". When I turned the console back on, the image of the console during the update section was that of the original fat Xbox One. I was like, uh this isn't right. But it downloaded the update then went back to the correct screen to finish setup. Haven't had any issues since.

My god at mirrors edge

You know EA fucked up when a backwards compatible 360 title blows you away more than a reenvisioning of it does.

I can't believe how good mirrors edge looks, if you folks have honestly never played it.....pick the damn game up.

Also how the hell did they add HDR to it? Didn't even think it was possible to get HDR implemented on such an old game.

That sounds odd. For me when I am start a HDR game my set switches to HDR mode. When I quit the game it turns HDR off so my Dashboard never looks weird. Are you activating HDR yourself manually? If so, that is why it looks like shit on the dashboard. HDR automatically toggles on and off when it detects the HDR meta data.

I played Forza 7 demo. Looked fantastic. Quit out of the game. Xbox black screened and reset itself.

Decided to pause/cancel all downloads to see what this console sounds like, and there is just a constant whir/buzz.

While playing a game, the fans go up and down constantly. Not SUPER loud but enough to hear it and notice it.

Think I'm going to just return it to GameStop and wait a bit longer to purchase.

I don't understand the 4k patch downloads at all, I think my X is messed up or something. Game websites are reporting that rise of tomb raider is at 50 gbs while my tomb raider is at 30gb or so. I don't think my X is automatically downloading the 4k assets. I launch my game fine and it says in the Xbox site it won't launch unless you download.

And the green flash is ok?

Mine also has a slight green flash. I believe it may be my receiver but it's extremely quick. If you blinked you would miss it. As long as HDR is working it just sounds like the issues you are reporting are just the quirks of the transition between HDR and SDR.

Been having a lot of fun with AC Origins. Beatiful game...

Looking at all my games makes me wonder what Crytek could have done with this hardware and a Ryse sequel... Pisses me off they didn't get the financial support to make one, because Ryse for all its flaws was a gorgeous game, and I personally had a lot of fun with it. It was a decent foundation for a franchise.

Anyone using the XB1X with an LG OLED display along with ARC? Whenever I load something that enables HDR, I lose audio and have to toggle between tv speakers/arc to regain audio. This doesn't occur with my PS4. :|
