I think the piping in the coat matches the striping on the shirt, which is cool.

What amuses me personally is that (despite being an American) I've long envisioned a Paula Poundstone type as what I think would be an interesting take on a female Doctor, and 13's outfit looks very much like something Poundstone would wear.

My wife and I have been watching the whole of the revival series lately, from Rose onwards in broadcast order. We got to The Day of the Doctor last night. The Tom Baker cameo makes a lot more sense to me now. My face was leaking a bit as the credits rolled.

Ahh! I love Thirteen's outfit! It looks so nice and comfy!

Not too fond of her TARDIS, though...

The TARDISes all look alike to me. They're all blue police boxes!

They changed all the time. In the original series they started off with a version of a real police box (there were some wild variations of the real things) and gradually changed it, flattening the roof, changing the text from dark lettering on white to white lettering on black, get rid of the St John's logo and for a spell, the light on top was a spinning blue light (like a cop car) rather than a flashing white light. They gradually tried to make the prop look closer to the real thing in the early eighties but nowhere like the new series box. There's even one story where the text up the top that says Police Box lit up during materialisation (ark in Space?). The new series box is a lot larger and has that wood effect (which is really overdone in the pic of Jodie Whittaker's new outfit reveal).

It's perhaps a bit over designed (I thought of Mork from Ork when I first saw the pic) but it looks like a modern take on 80s costumes. Certainly more interesting than a hoody with holes in it.

Assume public filming is kicking off pretty soon; they only do these to avoid the leaks from long lens pap shots...

Fix the pants and we have a winner.

I do want to see what she'll look like once she fully locks into the role.

For example, Capaldi's promo image:

So I guess the TARDIS interior is the next big reveal. No more round thingys.
That one might wait a while, since it's a closed set so they don't need to make sure they get the news out before any blurry photos appear.

It'll probably still get coverage in something like RT or DWM, but they won't need to get the press out to beat the scoop.

Only just twigged the coat has a big old hood, too. I'm guessing that was something from the reveal they'd already decided on or wanted to keep, and I think that's a good iconic thing a Doctor has never done before (apart from Capaldi's flirting with hoodies under his coat) - the same way Tennant's Doctor used to put on the big coat for big silhouette moments, here they have the hood...

For comparison, Tennant and Smith Doctors from beginning to final series.

Tennant was super consistent, only losing the overcoat.

Yeah it's crazy how little he wore his "Official" costume, only in the first two episodes I believe he had that particular variation. I like that he kinda settled into the Red velvet with waistcoat look. That's Quintessential 12 to me.

Tennant looks awful in that photo, and like 5-10 years older than he actually looks in the show.

Blue suit forever!

I like everything but the pants, they just don't mesh with the rest in my opinion. I might change my mind when it's in motion.

The greater injustice is the missing sticker on the door. That sticker is great.

I wasn't sure about the outfit at first but I gave it five minutes and it's growing on me.

I'm still terrified that Chibnall is going to create an abominable series and Whittaker is going to take the blame. I suppose if Moffat can write good individual episodes and yet to be a rubbish showrunner then the opposite can also be true. Right? Right?

A good chunk of RTD's episodes were nothing to write home about, but man, could he run a tight ship. I expect the Chibnall era to be a lot like the RTD era in that regard.

That's awesome. I dig the outfit, less busy but still with some flair.

I actually really liked the Moffat-era TARDIS, tbh. Was hoping they'd keep that around, or work with a similar look, but no big deal.

I wonder if they will incorporate the whole TARDIS key sequence with the hoodie into the show at all, like how Bill's reveal scene actually fit into The Pilot.

Isn't she the first Doctor with overtly non-natural hair colouring? I wonder if she'll regenerate with the natural colour or if they'll leave it down to the magic of regeneration.

Never forget that Moffat's initial first pick for Smith's costume was this, with the stripy undershirt for what he described as a 'pirate' look, but Smith campaigned hard for the tweed and bow tie

Not sure where this is from. This is another view from io9, which suggests a diverse range of choices from which a winner was eventually chosen.

https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/io9....or-matt-smiths-eleventh-doctor-1197082135/amp

Moffat himself talked about this in his DWM column around the 50th/when Matt left (and it's been talked about at comic con etc since) that's when all those pictures were first printed - during the 50th fever - but Moffat scripted a "pirate-like" look initially once Smith was cast, but then as soon as Smith started trying on costumes it went in a completely different direction. They tried on loads of stuff, but that specific look was based on what Moffat scripted, like how RTD scripted the leather jacket even before Eccleston was cast - but that one stuck as it was key to his vision of this damaged version of the character etc etc. The tweed was all Matt - he wore tweed to his audition, and despite producers/Moffat trying to steer it away, it absolutely stuck.

Quoth Smith: "For the first meeting, I went in a tweed blazer, which is why he wears a tweed blazer. I thought, 'Well, he's old, so I've got to make him feel kind of professorial.' I had a tweed blazer which I loved and which, obviously, I can never wear again! I was really annoyed at the time because I thought I looked really cool in it."

This sort of back-and-forth between the writers and the actors is the way of the show, though. RTD didn't want Tennant to have the overcoat, and used to write him taking off the jacket into scripts very specifically to make sure Tennant couldn't sneakily keep it on for most of an episode (this as per DVD commentaries & podcasts from Series 2). He seemed to warm to it over time, though.

And Moffat actually said this? Sorry if I sound like I'm being unreasonable in asking for clarification, but when we were in the old place I was often utterly staggered by the sheer amount of hatred that was directed at the show runner. I suppose I need to know if we're going to keep up the disreputable tradition that has scarred the fandom.

Yeah, in one of his (often very candid and excellent) DWM columns. Moffat's a good writer who came a cropper of schedules, struggles to find a stable production team, and arguably his own being too in demand with Sherlock etc. Like, I think there's a problem in the fanbase that goes in two directions - one being unnecessary vitriol (IE he's a hack fraud, or whatever - no, he kept the show alive for many years and actually introduced it to a whole new audience abroad, though to be fair the success of Torchwood on BBC America helped to lay the groundwork) and the other end being the writers being beyond reproach where you can't even discuss certain aspects of the show.

We've had this debate before, though. Discussion, dissection, criticism =/= hatred, fwiw. Lots of nice things are said, too! And hey - I'm the guy who will stand up and defend Love & Monsters, so we all have our crosses to bear.

That costume note is really just intended not as a malicious attack on Moffat but just an interesting wrinkle in the history of the show - once he cast a young man (after intending to cast an older man) he began to envision a younger Doctor that was more swashbuckling and trendy with a costume that looked like it fell out of a H&M catalog but with added quirk. I don't even think that's a bad direction - and honestly, bits of Jodie's outfit feel like that. But Matt steered it away from leaning into the youth and we ended up with tweed and suspenders. It's meant to be a fun note, the sort of thing fans can chew on and wonder what might've been.
