A 27 inch - 35 inch 4k monitor with HDR 10 and an IPS panel that does not cost $3k won't exist for quite a while, won't it?

I'm almost tempted to buy a TV at this point. Just need to find one with input lag of sub 20ms.

I hate that there isn't just a great non expensive 4k player with dv. I have the LG one next to me but think I should get the Phillips one instead. GRRRRR
Yeah, hopefully this becomes a priority as the next set of players come and maybe drive down the price now that discs are starting to come with it.

LOL

Just went to a Dolby theater and watched Infinity War... I thought that I will never return to the theatre after buying the OLED, but the picture quality and the sound really impressed me. It's the first time I could sit two and half hour watching a 3d movie without any discomfort. The picture was very clean. The reclining chairs were nice, but damn the PQ was pristine. It was like watching a movie at home. Still even when they screening the demo reel before the movie with the "perfect black" around a bright white circle, I was thinking "not as perfect as my OLED".

I loved the movie and I don't know if I really liked the show or if it was just my video enthusiast side who loved the experience.
Yeah it looked really great in IMAX 3D.

I'm also looking forward to re-watching it on my OLED with HDR to see how good it looks like that as well. :)

Anyone have a recommendation for a wall mount for the LG B7? I originally wanted the LG slim mount(I want to re-create the W7 look as much as possible), but reviews on that seem fairly mixed. I don't need a ton of features (tilt, arm, etc). I just want it wall mounted for aesthetic reasons.

Are these really better settings than Rtings? Namely setting Contrast all the way down to 80 and Sharpness to 10.
Those are the SDR ones (idr if i used the SDR ones) I was more so referring to the HDR ones (game, cinema, DV). Those three all look quite good to my eye. (contrast is 100 for those).

Also, fwiw, traditionally "sharpness" is a useless holdover from generations ago and generally only negatively impacts picture.

I saw Infinity War at Dolby Cinema a few days ago and it was an incredible experience. The PQ wasn't that of my OLED at home, but it was still way better than regular cinema. The Dolby Vision HDR didn't hurt either.

Now I REALLY want to upgrade my TV size from 65" to minimum of 75". I watched Thor Ragnarok a few days ago on my set. Picture is amazing but I really want that 77" OLED now ;_;

Anyone have an LG C8 yet? I'm ordering the 77" here in the next few days. PQ is Ming blowing and Vizio bricked the 4k in my P series with an update.

It's a glorious thing.

At least until consumer 88" models are out. Then I'm gonna need one of those.

Was watching Thor two nights ago and spiderman last night, and as much as my 65" was a decent jump from my 55" last year, I'm totally ready for a 75-80"...

A moment of your time? I have this short pamphlet, might be of interest to you all. It's called "Projectors and You: Painting Your Spare Bedroom Carbon Black Totally Doesn't Make It Look Like a Murder Box" and- hey! Come back! The pamphlet has pictures!

The pictures aren't very good, I had to remove all the lighting in that room. :(

So what's the deal with the LG UP970 player, again? There one here in the back room of Nebraska Furniture Mart for $199. Thinking of grabbing it.

Do settings for the B7 carry over to the C7 1 to 1? I just got a C7 and looked at rtings as a baseline for my C7, but I've found other sites that have B7 settings and they look like they should work with my C7? I don't even really know the difference between the B7 and C7 anyway.

Quick question:

Recently the Xbox update rolled out, including variable refresh rate and I believe a fix for RGB full.

I often use PC mode for SDR gaming ergo shouldn't I use full RGB along with High black levels? I believe in the past this caused problems due to gamma and crushing of blacks but with the update?

I know of its not broke don't fix it but ...

Edit: Setting the Xbox X to full and black to high seems to be working now

Should be fine, same panel difference is audio only I believe...

You should check out Emagine theaters or something similar in your state. Changed my whole perspective on shit. Like football, I, too, preferred to not go to movies because the in-home experience is simply so much better these days. But recently I started going to the movies more often. That's because Emagine theaters recently remodeled everything to where there are less than half as many seats, and each row is composed of ~20 full sized, high quality leather electric recliners. There's nearly twice as much ass room compared to traditional theater seats. There's also a few feet of room in front if you on the floor. So you can take your shoes off, put your feet up, and enjoy self-serve free refills on your Icees and sodas, or else grab something from the liquor bar. Tickets are cheap too, only $5-8 so you can get a refillable drink and a movie ticket for like $10. Granted you're not going to get the fully Dolby experience or anything like that, but it's such an improved experience overall when you want to see something brand new in the theater. I've actually been enjoying going to the movies again.

AMC is garbage and I refuse to do the $14 ticket, cramped seating movie thing anymore.

The earlier models can get a bit loud. Not much features outside of playback. I just wanted a player that could do both DV and HDR10, and it was one of the only that can. Outside of a noisey drive straight times, which I don't hear when an actual movie is playing, it gets the job done for me.

Right on. I already have an Apple TV 4K for streaming and my media equipment lives in a closet. Just looking for a UHD player with DV. I think I'll snag it. Thanks.

I have a stud finder and I'm relatively smart. I should have no issue hanging my wall mount, right?
Right. Just follow the directions.

What does everyone think of the new HDTV test site then?

https://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/reviews/Sony/xf90#

It feels like a backwards step to me, he's just giving the bare facts now, with no expansion on each topic (comparing other TV's etc) like he would on the old site.

Feels a bit poor man's Rtings.

Something to consider since you'll have to download the DV update via firmware update on the player -- For whatever reason it would not download the file from me on my wifi network. I had to use my phone as a hotspot, connect the player to it, and for some reason it downloaded fine using that method.

Just a FYI if you happen to run into the same problem.

So my TV says HDR is supported on my new LG E7 set. However, my PS4 Pro doesn't say anything about 2k/4k in the actual Video Output Information. Would you guys say everything is good or not?

My $10 Amazon mount for my Panasonic plasma performs like a champ. I'm somewhat handy so had no issues getting it level too. Works great.

I did shell out $200 to have professionals come and mount the 77" OLED though. I got too good a deal on that thing to worry about possibly breaking it. Open box deal too, so even if I returned it, I wouldn't get the same price again (and no way I could afford it new). Worth the expense for the peace of mind.

I ordered the LG OLED77C8PUA 77" display today from Cleveland AV. They gave me a price of 8k out the door and it's an extra $550 for 5 year extended warranty that includes in home service. Best deal I could find especially since it's brand new.

Turned it on. I'm getting and losing the signal though with Deep Color Output.
Your settings seem fine, other than it's using YUV420 instead of YUV422. To change that, change the Resolution setting on PS4 to Auto or RGB. Then it will use RGB for SDR and YUV422 for HDR.

Other than that, everything in the picture you posted is normal.

Mode should be switching automatically on an LG OLED. If you see "HDR" pop up in the top right, you're not in the HDR settings. You can edit your HDR settings while you have an HDR source displayed. Same with Dolby Vision. Once you stop Dolby/HDR playback, it'll revert back to your SDR settings. You essentially have 3 separate calibration profiles that each need different values. That's why I recommend the Rtings settings as a baseline -- they'll get you in the ballpark of accuracy in each mode without requiring specialized equipment. It's always best to pay for a professional calibration, however.

Quoted for later

I had a similar issue when I set up my new Apple TV 4k and turned on HDR. I changed HDMI cables with my Switch and all was good. Try another cable

So guys I'm picking up one of these new TCLs for my (tiny) game room. It just barely has the space to cram a 65" in there so that's what I'm getting. If all goes well I'll upgrade next year to an OLED once we get VRR and all the other new buzzwords and send this TCL to the bedroom. But before I start painstakingly looking at a billion reviews I have a few general questions. I've never really set up a proper "game/movie room", I've just used PC monitors in my bedroom to watch movies and play games.

  • I really really don't have the space for a 5.1 or 7.1 or any fancy Atmos things. I am cramped enough that I don't even know for sure that I'll be able to fit a 2.1 setup unless I legit put the speakers below my TV on whatever desk contraption I end up getting for the media devices. Between a good soundbar and a 2.1 speaker setup - is the difference huge? I'm looking at an ELAC UNI-FI B5 + Sub vs. some nice $700ish soundbar.
  • Will whatever receiver I buy now end up being obsolete next year when the new HDMI standard comes out with VRR support? Also I know literally nothing about this - what's a reasonable "Watts per channel" to drive those ELAC speakers if I end up going for those rather than a soundbar?
  • I don't wanna go all out this year on the TV (hence why I'm skipping OLED until next year), but is there an "upgrade pick" above the TCL where I can get something better without going, say, past $500 above its MSRP? I can do $1,500 max and I really want it to be 65". If it's like "nah you either spend 1k on the TCL or double that for the next level" I'll just stick with the TCL.

1.) There's a difference, but I wouldn't call it "huge." The key is getting away from internal TV speakers in the first place. It's all diminishing returns after that. For a bedroom, I wouldn't worry about running wires for a true surround setup, but that's me.

2.) Yes, it'll be obsolete. Wait to buy a new receiver if you want HDMI 2.1.

3.) If you're already planning on upgrading, I wouldn't concern yourself with trying to pay more today. The TCL 6-series is the sweet spot for value. $999 for 65" and those specs is insane.

My advice: stick with the TCL and a cheap soundbar or HTIB. You get better sound now without breaking the bank, and don't need to worry about buying a receiver in 2018. Next year (or whenever you decide to ugrade) you can shell out for a more powerful sound system if you want.
