If you are willing to include japanese style tactical RPGs in the mix, Mercenaries Saga Chronicles is an insanely good value.
It is indeed. A port of SaGa Scarlet Graces is also in the works for it, too.

Romancing Saga 2 is, $25. Came out in Dec. for pretty much all systems.

It has a basic premise of an imperial family fighting against a group of demonic generals who were once legendary heroes, but the draw is less in the story itself and more in how it plays across countless generations of the imperial dynasty as successive generations tackle different scenarios that are presented to you. Some of the scenarios are actually really neat in what they do, but don't go in really expecting an amazing story.
I got bored of aegis defenders demo really quick, it's not my kind of game I guess.
Regarding pinball fx3, I notice a bug when playing in Tate mode with the Joy-cons attached. Flippers are assigned to up and down on the d-pad (since the d pad is sideways) but it seems like it is not possible to press both flippers at the same time. This REALLY sucks because it is my favorite way of playing ergonomically speaking but with this bug it's just not possible to play. There's even some actions that require you to press both flippers at once like to exit the weapon selection menu in the Skyrim table.
Realy big oversight, I will inform Zen and hope they can patch it up.
Sounds fine actually I'll take a look. Just after posting that I realised that the Tate mode can be done in the 2 orientations and indeed there's no issue with the right Joy-con so I'm wondering if the issue is actually with the way in which the d-pad is made or something. Could it be that it cannot really register opposing directions at the same time like a real d-pad would not be able to? That'd be extra weird since it's supposed to be just 4 d buttons like abxy but maybe Nintendo put in place some kind of restriction on a software level to make it work like a real d-pad for some reason? It's possible, attach only the right Joycon, not the left Joycon. And you can push X and B to use both flippers at the same time.
I haven't tested this only with the left Joycon attached, because I see more comfortable the right one, and this was the only available option in the previous version pre-60 FPS patch.
All of that said, forget this strategy, to push both flippers at the same time in pinball games is a terrible idea, that will make you loose a lot of balls in the cheapest ways :)
Oh shit, I'm definitely doing that. The bumpers on the sorcerers lair were annoying me to no end.Important Tip to all new Pinball FX3 Players!!
Stop what you're doing, go to Settings, turn off annoying pop-up/guide notifications, make sure Licensed Music is on (off by default, not that there's much of it on Switch).
MORE IMPORTANTLY:
Change "Pop-Up Score Value" from 1,000 to 1,000,000
Change "Major Pop-Up Score Value" from 1,000,000 to 5,000,000
This will make the tables much easier to play as all those piddly score pop-ups are very distracting and useless. It will be much more satisfying to get those rare big score pop-ups now, too.
Optional: turn off "Ball Trails" mute annoying Voice Overs or Music.
The Voice Overs on some tables are very obnoxious, you can mute them!
Mute the music and enjoy your own soundtrack (Jurassic Park! Jaws! The Fallout OST!) or play pinball while listening to podcasts!
Aegis Defenders' demo is good, yo!
Wasn't considering getting it before but I am now.
Other options are Heart & Slash, Lichtspeer, and World to the West.
Any opinions about the latter 3?
Great job, d00d!Oh shit, I'm definitely doing that. The bumpers on the sorcerers lair were annoying me to no end.
By the way, just broke 40 million in the tournament! Getting closer to the top 10! :)
I've read plenty of opinions of people who thought Morphite sucked. Too many.WELP, I had enough for a $60 eShop game after being surprised with money. Tropical Freeze just came out and...I didn't buy it! DUN DUN DUN!
(mainly because I already played it once. I do want to get TF but since its a one and done type of game until a replay I'd rather wait for physical and I only had eShop credit.)
What I didn't play was Skyrim. So I bought it. It crashed twice in the first 90 minutes. I really hope this doesn't happen often. Now played about 4 hours and seems pretty great so far. Obviously much inferior to something like BOTW but as the only other open world exploration game on Switch its an alright alternative. Seems like there's only grass, snow, and underground areas which is a bit of a bummer, plus so far all towns look the same and all people look the same so it's hard to tell them apart, but the exploring and sidequests so far are pretty good and snow is my favorite area so thats cool. I think I'll still enjoy it plenty and probably get 100+ hours out' every it. I hope for more open world games since BOTW had me hooked.
Got $36 left. Tough decision since this'll probably be the last spare money I have for a couple months. Thank I'll get Morphite on sale, and either Night in the woods, or a combination of Dandara/Detention but not sure yet. So many games, so little money. :P

Join Us!You folks are getting me excited about pinball. The performance problems kept me away at launch, but popping in and out of pinball would be fun.
I have it on iPad. Didn't like it. Really wanted to.
If you enjoy the franchises you will enjoy the table pack. It's kind of in the middle as far as what's available. I'm not personally a fan of any of those shows but found Family Guy and Bob's Burgers enjoyable. Archer and American Dad less so.How is the "Balls of Glory" (which contains the Bob's Burgers, Family Guy, Archer, American Dad tables) pack? I haven't heard anyone say anything about them - negative or positive, but aside from Portal series, those are the only franchises I actually like and would be willing to spend money on.
I haven't played LFO too much yet, but it's decent. The REZ influence is very obvious, and it does a good job at mimicking the synesthetic elements -- your shots create euphonic beats and your joycons pulse like a metronome. The gameplay involves holding the shot button down while locking onto enemies by moving your reticle over them and then using the homing shot to take all your locked targets out. The game is definitely simpler and more barebones than REZ, and I haven't found any sections that offer changing or dynamic perspectives, so you're always looking straight ahead. There are branching paths, and at the end of each level you can move left or right to take an A route or a B route. You only have one life in the main mode so once you take a hit you're back to the title screen. There's an invincible mode for casual players, and there's a mode you can unlock by beating the normal mode but I haven't done that yet so I don't know what it is. So far it's a decent experience but kinda just makes me want to go play REZ instead. I'd say wait for a sale.'Don't Die, Mr Robot DX' seems like a simple game with low production values in the surface, but it makes tons of smart decisions denoting a great knowledge of the video game medium and its resources to make an attractive game.
One of these things are the backgrounds. While the game it's a single screen game with a constrained area for the action, they make this much more attractive by creating a fake plane of parallel scroll. So when you move around this constrained area in the screen, you really have the impression of traveling through a much more vast and non static world.
Plues all the subtle details in the production values. The smile of your robot when you make explode a fruit, how the music is more tense with each increasing wave of difficulty, the subtle scanline effect referencing a classic arcade look, but with some elements remaining crisp to still look like a contemporary game...
You can see how Infinite State Games have made every single design decision based in a deep knowledge of the video game medium, and how they have spent an infinite number of hours balancing and tuning every small and subtle detail, from the enemy patterns to the psychics and momentum of your movement.
By the way, how is 'L.F.O.: Lost Future Omega', any impressions yet?

It's just really tedious. Running back and forth on your slow-ass horse is the pits.

Otocky is awesome. I'd love to see it come back in some way. I like games that let you make music by playing a fun game, rather than giving you a plastic guitar or notes falling from the top of the screen, though I do like traditional rhythm games too. Thanks for your detailed impressions!
I finally pulled the trigger with 'Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze', my first time with the game after having skipped the Wii U.
The good thing is that this digital purchase has given me a fucking ton shit of golden coins, so I think that I will use them to purchase 'L.F.O.: Lost Future Omega'.
It's just what I imagined: your typical comiket game made by a single developer, with low production values. But there are not so many games with this type of sound design following a 'Otocky' tradition, so I'm in.
Thanks for the awesome writeup, HHB! This is my first time dipping into the Zen library. I'm gonna pick up the Bethesda pack (wish those tables were a bit less...brown though.) Can you help me decide between Carnivals & Legends vs. the Medieval Pack? I am really into Arthurian and Grecian legends, so I'm torn.
Cool, thank you! I appreciate it. I'll probably go with C&L and get the Medieval one down the line.I think the C&L pack is better than the Medieval pack but it does cost more.
If it helps I think the Son of Zeus table is much better than Excalibur. But Epic Quest is pretty great.
Tough call! You should get both eventually. Maybe since you just bought the Bethesda pack you should go with the cheaper Medieval pack? I have a feeling you'll be playing Epic Quest more than Excalibur, though!
Don't sleep on Adventure Land just because it's amusement park themed, that table is fun as hell.
Good choice, IMO!Cool, thank you! I appreciate it. I'll probably go with C&L and get the Medieval one down the line.
Can you join the tournament without having to sign on to the publisher specific thing when you first boot the game up? I have not created an account for that....Top 3 pinball masters if the mystical arts on ResetEra the last few hours.
1. Bobnowhere
2. Jbourne
3. Tolkir the scrub
More people should play in the tournament. It's on one of the free tables. If you haven't played it since launch, download the patch and give it another shot.
There's some tables that have some really grating callouts.
So what table would you guys want to do for the next tournament?
I'd like to pick one from a pack most people own or are willing to buy, so I'm leaning Bethesda or Jurassic Park. Or Carnivals and Legends since a lot of people should already have it and it's one of the cheaper packs.
Good choice, IMO!
That table pack, though... i can't recommend it because the other two tables are severely lacking.Paranormal and I'm there, especially if it's a time attack one

Ah I did not realise that. Thanks for the reply. That's an automatic process, as long as you have online access for your Switch user. It just links your Nintendo ID to their internal database. No need to set up a Zen account manually.
Has anyone played both Sky Rogue and Manticore? I'm interested in both but I feel like they would each scratch a similar itch.
Thank you for this as well as the awesome writeup above. Will definitely be picking up some packs in the near future. If you enjoy the franchises you will enjoy the table pack. I would definitely rate it above the Universal Pack and it's a better value since you get 4 tables vs 3 for $10.
It's also better than Zen Classics, Zen Core and Sci Fi packs for sure.
How long was it? Is it replayable?Just finished Slayaway Camp, that's the most fun I've had with a puzzle game in ages. Good to see the horror film theme carries through to the post-game- there are more levels as 'deleted scenes'.
There's around 150 levels, so it depends how quick you crack through them- some took me under a minute, some over an hour! Once completed, you can go back through them with extra challenges, and the dlc films and deleted scenes add several dozen more levels too. Not sure about replayability- once you know what to do it's fairly easy, but the order of moves is fairly specific for the more complex ones. I'll go back to it next year when I've forgotten them, I think!
