Hmmm, good point there. They do emphasize "NES" quite a bit here. :(This will never get GameCube. The fact that they're going out of their way to plaster Nintendo Entertainment System classics all over it makes me think we won't even get anything else other than NES. Would definitely be Nintendo-like.
The issue isn't with NES games themselves. They're still great stuff, all these years later. The issue is that people wanted more than just this. They wanted a robust VC with tons of retro games, which is not unreasonable as an expectation, given that prior Nintendo systems had it. It seems Switch will not at this point, however. So I have a question. A question that is completely separate to the cloud saves issue but is in response to many comments in this thread.
Do people not like NES games any more? Are they not still classics? Why is there not more excitement when there was loads for the NES Classic?
Eh, people have asked for GameCube games for years and years. Nintendo themselves never said we were getting GC games or even any kind of VC really, but Eurogamer said a long time ago there would be a full VC with GC games prior to Switch's launch. Since then, people have had the expectation that Switch would eventually have them. Most of them forget that the leak was proven fake afterwards, tho.I'm confused. Nintendo flat out says this service will have NES games added for free when they announced this service, and there's multiple posts complaining it's not GameCube games.
Who ever said GameCube games?
Online functionality is one of the new features for these 30 year old games and, I'm sorry, Zelda is terrible for multiplayer. Taking turns in SMB is alright but still not really ideal.Okay but The Legend of Zelda, SMB1+3. We can only imagine that Metroid will get in there too at some point. 2/3 of a NES Classic for £18 (a year) seems like a pretty sweet deal, especially as they'll add more games.
Sure, if you like to pay 100 a year. That's like asking Sony to give away PS Now when you are PSN subscriber. If they had an on-demand 'Netflix for classic Nintendo' library, where you could go all you can eat for games up to say, Gamecube era as long as you're subscribed it would be wonderful.
This is just pointless.

so just to be clear, when this launches, you cant play online with a sub anymore, for example in Mario Kart correct? Like PS+?
That would be awesome, and I'd be more than ok with it. However, we don't have anything close to confirmation that will be the case. It's just NES games right now.I do think too many people are sleeping on the classic games element.
Included in the subscription we have these classic games, with added online features, all for no extra cost, with more to be added regularly including SNES and probably more consoles.
That's huge and would have been worth the price alone in my view. It's pretty much what we've wanted for a long time, just wish it didn't have the dripfeed, but I get why.
Who said it will be innovative? sources?Hmm' we kept hearing how Nintendo's online would be innovative and stuff, after reading the news I'm like "that's it?"
At least I'm not an online gamer so I will skip this.
Get a better ISP or stop everyone else from sharing your wifi.I can't wait to pay to be disconnected every other match in Splatoon 2
I don't think anyone has answered your question yet but there will be the requirement for the subscription for Mario Kart, ARMS, Splatoon 2 and others as per the PR. There will apparently be some games that do not require it but that's a mystery as of this point. Basically in any of the Nintendo games from September onwards with online you'll need to subscribe to play online.
Wait. How many people can play online on one console with ONE paid PSN subscription? Sony added some kind of 7 Family members thingy too since firmware 5.0.0.
But I don't know if that includes online play or just managerial stuff.
Nintendo is 35 for up to 7 people. I do agree that Nintendo should have an backup save app on the console itself.
If it was just these 20 games and nothing ever again then I'd understand the complaints but they have outright said there will be more added regularly
Games are very rarely designed around that though, this is already something which isn't happening. Nintendo's choice to restrict voice chat to a shitty mobile app solely harms users, it doesn't impact anything else.My issue with voice chat is that it's the default. Without it being the default, games will have to be designed around that. And thus make voice chat unnecessary.
Muting does not solve that. Games being designed without voice chat in mind at all does.

I can see that. But the least thing they could do is to announce more platforms than just NES and SNES. And their plan on how many new games they'll release each month (if it's even a new games per month thing, we don't know). If it was just these 20 games and nothing ever again then I'd understand the complaints but they have outright said there will be more added regularly
I wanna see the receipts. They had also said the online service was coming a year ago, yet here we are, still waiting. If it was just these 20 games and nothing ever again then I'd understand the complaints but they have outright said there will be more added regularly
I've said this earlier in the thread, but there's no way they're gonna give you everything in their library up to GamCube for $20, and if there was some sort of pproper VC alternative to this, we'd know by now, over a year into the Switch's life. I think NES and maybe SNES are the extent of the retro offerings we're getting on Switch. It's very disappointing.
I feel youCouldn't care less about online or NES classics. I NEED those cloud saves.
Finally, I can take my Switch outside.
PS4 has a maximum of 16 user profiles of which only 7 can have their own PSN account but all 16 can use the privileges a single PS Plus offers including online play.
Is that since 5.0.0? That's good to know regardless. If a console is set as the primary console for the PS+ subscriber, then any number of accounts can play online on that PS4
However - only the account holder gets online saves. It's the only part of PS+ that isn't shared. It's my biggest issue with PS+. I can't justify a second subscription just so my kid can have save backups
Xbox lets all users have online saves - even non gold subscribers I think
I don't see the harm. If you really want voice chat, you can, but for those of us who really don't. Well, welcome to our world for the last decade or so. Now you get to jump through hoops to get your preferred method while I just hit play in the game and leave the app closed.Games are very rarely designed around that though, this is already something which isn't happening. Nintendo's choice to restrict voice chat to a shitty mobile app solely harms users, it doesn't impact anything else.
The harm is their voice chat option is bad. I wouldn't care if they wanted to default voice chat to off, or only to party chat which would solve your issues (and hell, I mostly only use Party chat on PSN anyway.) The problem is the voice chat being restricted to a phone makes it near enough unusable because you then can't hear game audio as well (and also, the audio quality of the app as it is now is pretty much unusably bad.)I don't see the harm. Voice chat has never been a priority for me, and has been a fairly major reason to not want to pay for online in the first place. Why on Earth would I pay for what I hate? I will pay for this, though. Nothing I hate, and I like NES games. Plus, you know, Smash is coming.
If you already have multiple Switches, then you know you can't share digital games, since digital games can only be activated on one console. Family sharing is just for the online subscription. No, only the "primary" account's games can be played on a switch. We have a switch each, not one we share.
I'll agree that far, yes. The voice chat option could be better for those who want to use it. When it compares poorly to just setting up a group call on Discord, yeah... room for improvement. The harm is their voice chat option is bad. I'd be fine if I had to jump through hoops to get my preferred method as you say, but the hoops aren't even there to jump through.
Erm......what's been listed in the OP?That's far too cheap, what are they even going to offer for such a meager donation each month?
Okay but you're not being forced to play any of these multiplayer. They're the full original games and some have additional features. So again, why don't people seem to be excited for a pretty good value package of NES games?Online functionality is one of the new features for these 30 year old games and, I'm sorry, Zelda is terrible for multiplayer. Taking turns in SMB is alright but still not really ideal.
How do you come to that conclusion? It's quite plausible that the online service will just have NES games and be completely separate from a Virtual Console.
The money that they make from this goes towards the funding of a new F-Zero title, Metroid Prime 5, Waverace Switch and Mother 3 localisation.
Cough up Era.
I do think too many people are sleeping on the classic games element.

That article just states that old games are coming but not under the "Virtual Console" banner. The article headline is poor and is what is causing the outcry because some people do not read past the headline.
When asked by Kotaku if games from other platforms will appear on the Switch's online subscription, Nintendo's spokesperson said the company had "nothing to announce on this topic."
It's an ongoing collection. You have access as long as you keep your subscription.Do we know if those 20 games will always be available as long as your subscription is up ? or do they rotate every couple of months or something ?
I've tried searching their new online section on Nintendo's website, but i can't find the answer to this in the FAQ or in the games list page
Great news! thanks! It's an ongoing collection. You have access as long as you keep your subscription.
