The Rocket Barrel levels are kind of annoying :(
I'm finding them better than in DKCR.

I'm enjoying this, I did world 3 yesterday including the K level, and did the first level of world 4. It's picked up nicely. World 1 was fine but not really anything special, it's got much more interesting now.

One thing I will say is that when I hear reprises of the old DKC trilogy music, I can't help but think that it doesn't quite suit the art style / tone of this game compared to the older ones. Those games were always bit more... melancholy than this one which is more brightly coloured and slapstick.

This game was sold out at my Walmart. I'm not going to buy it anytime soon, but I noticed it was missing. DK is a very powerful brand, and I think it will show more on Switch.

Having already played this on Wii U, my plan was to play the original SNES game instead of buying it again on Switch.

Not only did I finish it in under 3 hours (didn't realise how short this game was), it really did nothing to fill the Tropical Freeze sized hole in my heart.

Going to play Diddy's Conquest this week, but I know I'll probably end up just getting TF at the end of the week. I can't help myself!

The game doesn't make a good job teaching how to control the rocket, certainly. Remember that you only have to hold the button in order to ascend and that it's not neccessary to push it repeatedly like many people think.

Just beat world 6 boss and got credits so now does the real game begin?

Also the music is absolutely fucking....just ok. There was some decent stuff in there like grasslands theme and irate eight but I don't understand why everyone jizzes themselves over the soundtrack. I mean do you people also really dig Kenny G?

If you went through the whole world 6 and never once thought the music was above decent, then I guess it's just not your style of music

The wonderful thing about the music is not only the quality of the compositions but also the quantity and variety of the styles used, and how those suit the levels where they sound.

Each island has its own identity with particular rhythms and sets of instruments (trumpet and harmonica in the mangroves, accordion and violin in the heights, panflutes and marimbas in the savannah...), as well as defined tones that go from the joviality of the sunny beach to the melancholy of the rainy forest, the gravity of nature under fire, the mistery of subaquatic ruins or the nostalgy of the home village.

Music taste is subjective but the scale, complexity and maturity of Tropical's Freeze soundtrack is unrepeatable.

I like how Grassland Groove has like a 2 minute looped song that's completely unique that only plays if you idle under the stage clear barrel.

Some of the music choices are a little... odd in places, since they made completely unique bits of music for pieces of gameplay that can't possibly last long enough to hear the full song.

It's still somewhat better than Returns's trial by fire with that screeching maniac.

He deserves what the snowmads did to him and so much more.

The unique themes for the Rodent Ruckus goal barrel and Sawmill Thrill final checkpoint are equally as baffling.

But in DKCR you learn the basics from barrel rocket in Peaceful Pier, which is a pretty easy level without ceiling that let you experiment with the controls a bit better than Rodent Ruckus caves. Even though I'll admit that Rodent Ruckus is a secret level, so we could consider Twilight Terror the rocket tutorial, which is certainly easier.

The unique themes for the Rodent Ruckus goal barrel and Sawmill Thrill final checkpoint are equally as baffling.

There is also Irate Eight's first dry segment with an unique theme and, of course, Stickerbrush in Twilight Terror.

Kind of enjoying it. But so far the levels are a bit uninteresting/unremarkable so far and I find the controls annoyingly floaty. The spin/roll lacks a definitive end and you can't chain/buffer it easily like DKC so it's a bit annoying to roll through multiple enemies.

I'm sure I'll get used to it, but I do wish the controls were a bit crisper. There's too much acceleration in the movement.

Still early on though. Hopefully it grows on me.

The first island is definitely the weakest. It gets way better as you go on. The 3rd and 5th islands are especially great.

As for the roll, it's actually the opposite of what you're describing. The roll in the original DKC games would extend with each enemy you hit, so you could just roll through a batch of enemies easily. The Tropical Freeze roll only goes so far, so you need to learn its distance and be careful to not fall into the trap of rolling to a stop right in front of an enemy. As a rule of thumb, I'd try to avoid rolling at a group of more than 2 enemies unless they're very clustered, and if you do, jump out of the roll at the end so the third enemy in the pack won't hit you. Also, you can extend your roll indefinitely by tapping the button as long as you have a partner character (or are playing as Funky).

Also, try roll-jumping a lot. You have a lot more air control than you may expect when doing it, so once you get it down you can fling yourself around pretty wildly and still come to a stop when you need to.

I definitely hope it manages to grow on you. There's some great stuff here if you can wrap your head around the physics!

I just tap the whole time adjusting the rate of tapping to go up and down. That pretty much eliminates having to deal the barrel's momentum as well. You never actually have to drastically change your height in a short amount of time.

World 1 is a pretty safe and unchallenging world for the most part, but even then the design of each is still chock full of unique assets and meticulously rooted in the environment. So it's still fun on an observational level imo.

You can roll immediately after you start moving for instant momentum (either by jump canceling it with DK solo to launch him like a canonball, or rolling infinitely with a partner).

Thanks for the advice. I definitely need to get into the jump rolling groove. That'll help.

I do wish that the roll ending animation had some highly visible tell, but I guess I'll learn to judge its distance.

Roll jumping is the game's ace in the hole. It's never required to progress, but learning how to utilize it will completely change your perception of the level design. Think of it like dodge offset in a platformer.

Definitely check out some of the leaderboard replays if you haven't already (under time attack). The game lets players do some totally insane stuff with the mechanics, and stages are perfectly constructed around the highest level of play.

Got to Amiss Abyss yesterday, that level was beautiful. The lighting of course was great, but more than that, I love how circles are a motif in the level. The circles along with the wonderful swimming controls make the level feel graceful and elegant.

I got the game on Saturday and at first I played it in normal mode as I hadn't finished it on the Wii U, but after dying at lot in 1-K I decided to play in Funky Mode as I remember that bosses in the game are long so I wanted to save myself some headache for the final boss.

I also gave Funky Kong a try, yeah don't use him if this is your first time playing as he completely ruins the flow of the game. I also don't like how in Funky mode the game interrupts your play flow to alert the player that they can skip the level, should the player die multiple time.

I also wish that you could toggle between Funky and original mode as I sometime get tempted to switch back to original mode as I did make it to the second to last world in the original with all the Kong's letter so I know that I have the skills to do it.

I tried Funky Mode last night and just couldn't do it. It's a great mode for certain players, but it was simply too easy for me. Not only do his movement options completely break the difficulty of the stages, he has FIVE hearts. He'd probably be great for a hard mode playthrough, but I'm not finishing the game again in this mode to unlock it.

Whoever said the map music is bad, I totally agree with you. I forgot how much I don't like it, lol.

It's like the only weak link in an otherwise masterpiece OST.

It honestly feels like two different games, and I enjoy playing them both.

did you guys just fly thru every stage not worrying about letters and puzzles and complete the game or try to 100% as you go

For every game, I just concentrate on making it to the end the first time through. I only go back and 100% the game if I enjoyed it enough (like in the case of TF.)

Reason: there's been a few games (cough MGSV cough) that I enjoyed enough initially but then they started to suck halfway through and I realize that I will never touch them ever again.
