Someone that played through World 2 cannot call the music generic, makes no sense to me.

I just have to gush about how great Donkey Kong Island is as a final world in this game.

Many sequels have done cool fanservice where they take players back to an area from a previous game, and Tropical Freeze does that with a DK Island that pays extreme homage to Returns. It isn't Returns levels copy pasted, but instead the levels are all remixed to fit the story of the Snowmads taking over.

There's things like each of the main levels in that world paying homage to each of the 8 worlds in Returns, and then well remembered level and art elements return in their corresponding levels.

I just beat it and I thought the game was great but definitely not as good as I was expecting considering the massive praise I've heard it get. I honestly feel like Rayman Legends was a better pure platformer and lengthier to boot, IMO.

I'm not all the way through Legends yet, but it has definitely been a good experience. I the floaty jump isso different than in DKC, and makes for a different experience. But it also looks good and has some good music. I feel like the sum of it's parts are not quite as good as TF, .but I feel like ita possible to live in a world where some people prefer Rayman over DKC. They're both good, but I feel like TF is a better game, but Legends is right behind it or alongside

Yeah, DK Island in Tropical Freeze really made me realize how each of the worlds in Returns were rich in iconic imagery. Seeing a certain enemy frozen in the background for the cave world was laugh-out-loud funny.

That was one of my favorite callbacks, because that bat made me curse so much in the Rocket Barrel level in Returns. Felt like its fate was justified. lol

Finished yesterday, that final boss sadly left a sour taste in my mouth, it was bad, slow and predictable, but fuck you into the 3 stage transition because of you fall into the lava you are going to repeat everything from the start.
Retro seriously need to make better bosses because everyone of those in this game was wack. In fact the best "boss" was the mecha before the juice factory that you play inside the rocket barrel, and tbat doesnt count as a boss.
The bonus levels with the bananas were also terrible and repetitive.

Other than thay the final 3 worlds were great, and everyone of them had amazing levels and incredible music.

But im not in anyway wating with anticipation for DCKR3 if it exists. I think i had good fun with it for now but I really dont need more if they dont sake things up. Best thing of all apart from the platforming was the way retro "wrote" a story for the levels in each world. But rewatching some stuff of the older rare titles I think retro's donkey is missing a lot of stuff that made the other games magical and have a lot more of charisma. The written humour is completely missing, cranky doesnt even seem lile the same character (why the fuck is enjoying being there), 4th wall jokes aboit videogames are out, the intro and ending cutscens while beautiful looking feel more like a mickey mouse playhouse instead of something more fun and interesting. The tikis were crap, but the nomads are only slightly better, animation wise are great and have better design, but i seriously didnt give a crap about them (why the fuck did they conquer the island, just because they are supposedly vikings and looked nice?) and if retro really wants to do a 3, the should start using k. rool and the crocodiles. Yes, they need a good redesign them in the vein dixie got in this game (those toe fingernails in the rare renders were absolutely disgusting) but retro's art team is amazing and im sure they can do it. In fact start using some more members of the kong family to get some jokes there when you visit them on the map (the writting in funky's dialogue in the shop is seriously mediocre and i dont remember cranky in returns having that memorable dialogue either). And bring more animals, for the love of god.
Maybe it was part of the british humour and charm of rare, but they seriously need to amp the writing. Im not playing a 2d mario here with silent characters that only know how to make sounds, im playing dkc and it should feel different from 2d mario. In fact, 3d marios like odyssey are better written and feel more dkc than both return games from the fun dialogue part.

I only got the fucking bat that we all hated and dk house, and i beat returns twice.

I prefer the juice island and the savanah.

That's probably the worst music in the game for me, aside from Alpine Incline and Horn Top Hop (still pretty good tho) because it sounds so freaking similar to traditional music from my country and I've listened to that kind of music for years to the point of almost despising those sounds

I never played Returns, I probably should. I really wish the Switch release came with both games...

For Returns, there isn't a definitive edition of the game but most will recommend the 3DS version due to the additional secret levels and the mapping of roll to a button.

The Wii version does have better visuals and 60fps though, so if you can stomach "shake to roll" for that then it isn't a bad option either.

Wii version all the way imo. Game feels amazing at 60fps, and the motion controls are very responsive and consistent. The secret levels in the 3DS version are pretty good, but I'd take 60fps for the 70 levels already in the game over them.

Yeah that's about how I felt about rolling in the Wii version too. I thought it was actually pretty consistent in reading input, but I realize it's not that intuitive for everyone.

For the bonus levels I thought Monster did a great job designing them, but yeah Returns was already a complete experience without them.

As far as I'm concerned extra levels from DKCR 3D were not handled by Monster, but by Retro. I don't have any source to prove it but I'm pretty sure I've read about that (and about Monster being behind Secret Seclusion in DKCTF) not long time ago in this forum. And that would make a lot of sense because the additional stages from DKCR were excellent and Secret Seclusion levels are... not that excellent.

So I got this game yesterday, and its glorious.
Currently well into World 2, and the level creativity, and variation so far has been phenomenal.
The music, is the best I have played so far on Switch next to Mario vs Rabbids Kingdom Battle and Odyssey

I'm mad I spent sixty dollars on this...

Why are you guys hyping the soundtrack it sounded like David Wise phoned this one in.

The platforming is old school Nintendo hard that I like, howveer I find the overall design bland and uninspired.

I'm truly surprised this got such rave reviews, it's decent that's about it.

Excuse me? There is only ONE part of TF's soundtrack that's "phoned" in...

Also I've been playing DKCR3D recently and damn, that game is significantly harder than Tropical Freeze. I honestly think some parts are unfair even, especially with the 3DS circle pad.

only thing bad about David Wise is he has a tendency to sometimes do "lame children birthday party" in a few tracks.

like the end of every Temple level is just...whack, no other word for it.

Wow I had a hell of a time getting the N and G letters on 6-4 Blurry Flurry, then I finally got through it without getting hit once. Go figure.

Trying to get something avatar worthy going that's different from the previous Skowlvatar

You can get some hilariously amazing screenshots by spamming the screenshot button when doing that on all the bosses.

Jelly Jamboree has to be one of my favorite stages in the game. The bouncing platforms are just so fun.

World 5 in general is just fantastic.

Yes! Jelly Jamboree is pure joy! World 5 is definitely the best world in the game. It also has the best K level (Platform Problems) and the best boss!

Speaking of worlds, my appreciation for world 4 has gone up (dat music) while world 6 isn't quite as good as I remember from the Wii U. It feels oh so slightly more generic compared to the other worlds.

Why am I hearing remixes of Donkey Kong Country 1 music again anyway?

Some tracks are good but again I just felt it was overhyped. That's it.

People that keep criticizing the boss fights...I just don't get it. The only one that suffers from the length for me is world 3 and that's only because i can't really see a way to get more hits in faster.

Every other boss takes very little time per phase if you exploit all their openings. Even Fugu is pretty darn fast if you don't miss things .

People are bad at the game so they miss the opportunity to attack them making the boss go on way longer than they should. All the bosses can be beaten in a few minutes.

Still really not liking the controls.

For example, you can't just switch directions and roll. You need to switch directions, wait until you see the puff of dust, then hit roll. Also, so many times when rolling and jumping at some point I'll just lose all of my speed and I miss my next jump because DK failed to roll again and barely got any distance. Still not sure what I'm doing there.

I realize I have to learn the feel of DK's movement but it just doesn't feel intuitive at all.

Might sound like a dumb question but is this game worth it if I already own Super Mario Odyssey and BOTW? Kind of already getting my fill of platformers/puzzle games but for some reason Donkey Kong just keeps tempting me.

all 3 of those games scratch different itches so I'd say it's absolutely worth it

Yeah, I mean it's not really anything like SMO or BOTW. It's good if you want to scratch a platformer itch or just pick it up and play a level or two. The game is really freaking good.

DKCR Wii >>>> 3ds. You can't give up screensize and 60fps for no waggle. Waggle is an annoyance but you eventually get over it. Preserving momentum with Diddy Kong bounces is like 2x harder with half the frames.

100%. Those three are probably the top 3 games on Switch. A very different feel from Odyssey and BotW.
