I thought this wasn't gonna be for like another 8.5 hours. Didn't know they were out. Well, I'll still see them after work. Just somewhat surprised that they came out early on the app. I'm assuming its from the app at least.

When Steven sees Connie for the first time at the party and her outfit and hair are completely different...

I actually really felt his hurt. That scene somehow feels really true to life.

Also the Lion betrayal is pretty hilarious.

As with all Kevin episodes, this one is was particularly good.

All in all, I REALLY liked this bomb. These are some of the best townie episodes we have had for this show.

And just as with the Sardonyx bomb, the very human dread hanging over the episodes really elevates the otherwise 'mundane' events.

I got done with all of them. I'll write more in a bit, but my initial consensus: mostly pretty good.

Edit: Okay, here we go. Man, talk about changing things up.

I was hoping we'd go a bit more into the reunion, but I suppose the most important part of that was seeing Connie hurt by Steven's decisions, which I believe was released a few weeks ago. It set the stage well for Steven to grow by the end of the episode, which is kind of good because I felt this development was better than the main story of this episode. Been a while since we've seen Mayor Dewey, but I thought he was amusing in this. If only we could have politicians who owned up to stuff and knew when things could be better. I thought this one was pretty solid.

I've been blase on Lapis for a while now because I felt she hasn't been able to do much, and I've grown cold on Peridot because she ran out of things to do. That they both take center stage her and that I went along for the ride was a pleasant surprise. This would be the first tease that some big stuff has and is about to go down since Lapis specifies Blue Diamond.

Pumpkin seemingly disappearing was a convenient way of getting Steven and Peridot alone for some characterization, but it had some decent laughs. I felt bad when Peridot was trying to force Pumpkin to go, and I think the whole theme of "character sees something being done to someone else that reflects their situation and grows from it" was peppered throughout this stretch.

I was convinced this would end with Lapis agreeing to stay and fight alongside her friends, so I was legitimately surprised that she stood her ground of not being dragged into another war and got out of Dodge. But I do want to say that watching her take the barn -Peridot's house, really- and just fly off with it kind of undercut the drama. I should have been moved by Lapis' choice, but I was giggling watching that big structure be lifted away. That aside, I thought this one was good.

I think this one felt the most like a lark, but it had some decent drama near the end. Garnet, Pearl, Amethyst, and Greg not knowing about Steven's situation did seem odd, given the cautious looks they all had at the start of the first episode, but their antics were mostly amusing. The surprise appearance of Ronaldo throughout did make me smirk even if the voiceovers came out of nowhere. And we got even more teases here of backstory, particularly from Pearl. I understand we need these character-building episodes, but my patience can only take so many teases. A fine episode, but not one of my favorites.

I've been playing a ton of Stardew Valley lately, so I had quite a bit of fun with this one with all the crop crowing. After growing cold on Peridot after the Cluster arc, I had to pause and realize that I liked her in this one. It was a return to the somewhat uppity Peridot from season two, complete with a chance for her to grow.

It was to the point where when they return and everything was wrecked by the conveniently placed gem monster and she vents that I actually began to feel for her. I didn't really expect that going in, so I applaud this one for that. The monster fight at the end felt unnecessary, but the ending where Steven, Amethyst, and Peridot share a hug was nice. This one was quite solid.

I've liked Sadie well enough, and appreciate that she is given a chance to shine and reflect on Lars being stranded in space. The Cool Kids can be amusing, and they fit the bill here as well. We get a song here, and I have to say I didn't really care for it. It might be a way of showing how Sadie feels, but I didn't have that much fun listening to it but I will applaud the fun visuals. This was probably the weakest episode of this bunch, but it's not bad, just middle of the road.

And we hit the emotional climax of this stretch. I like that Kevin was given a chance to grow here and show he can have a side that is entertaining while still being underhanded. His bit about not moping around and living and thus making people want to be part of that life was pretty profound for a character like him. I liked that.

Course, I realize the focus here was Steven reconciling with Connie, who sports a new hairdo. I thought the whole bit of "I tried to contact you in person, but literally every one of these circumstances from the past few episodes prevented that" was a bit flimsy, but I did like the talk. Steven thought he was doing the best thing but was not taking everyone else's feelings into mind, which is something I hope is reflected later on.

I felt the episode should have ended on Steven and Connie being back with the others and everything being better, but I suppose we needed a release from the drama and end on a laugh with Kevin. It was a fine way to end a pretty solid episode.

So yeah, a pretty good batch, all things considered. I guess I'd rank them:
  1. Back to the Kindergarten
  2. Kevin Party
  3. Raising the Barn
  4. Dewey Wins
  5. Gemcation
  6. Sadie Killer
Now, back to waiting for more episodes!

The kindergarten episode was really nice i like how they made it a point to say that sometimes you can't fix something, but that doesn't mean you can't have good things elsewhere, also that field of sunflowers was beautiful

And just as with the Sardonyx bomb, the very human dread hanging over the episodes really elevates the otherwise 'mundane' events.
That moment from Kevin Party broke my heart as well, especially how it had been built up over the entire arc. It's the same hurt feeling I've gotten in the pit of my stomach when interacting with exes or people who I've had romantic feelings for when I was younger.

I loved this bomb to bits. Literally every episode dealt with the fallout from Wanted in some way. I've seen people online complaining that these were just throwaway townie episodes (while conveniently ignoring the Lapis and Peridot episodes). Those people are out of their goddamn minds. These episodes come immediately after an arc where Steven was put on trial by the Diamonds, Homeworld was seen for the first time, and a major side character was killed off and resurrected. Even though it's been almost half a year between episodes, the show just had a main plot heavy sci-fi arc. It can't go full throttle all the time; there needs to be emotional fallout and consequences to what just happened.

I do think that the show has had a problem with filler-esque townie episodes. But just like the Sardonyx bomb (as lorddarkflare mentioned), these episodes were all tied together with the arc's themes, emotions, and story. This was a sad, sad bomb of people trying to deal with sad stuff happening to them with some eventual catharsis and hope in the end.

Anyway, the most shocking part of these episodes wasn't anything gem or main plot related.
Sadie quit her job! I literally yelled out "what the fuck" at my tablet when that happened. Sadie has been working at the Big Donut since the fucking pilot of Steven Universe. I was just expecting her to ask for some time off. That's a massive status quo change for me.

I feel the whole point of this stretch of episodes, besides the fallout from the last batch, was to blast the status quo to bits, and I'm really intrigued by that.

Other posters have summed up my thoughts better than I could, so I'll just say that I really liked this batch of episodes.

I never thought Sadie would ever quit working at the Big Donut. That's a big change for the show going forward.

Wow, season 5 has been great so far. Also really enjoyed the bomb, it was exactly what I wanted in many ways.

Also throughout the entire thing I was just like "*insert major character who's in a bunch of episodes here*! I'VE MISSED YOU!" which I didn't really expect to this extent. Please say the next hiatus isn't too long.

Really dug this bomb. In some ways I actually liked it more than Wanted. Status quo changes, good character development, it looked and sounded good (apart from typical Lamar stuff) and surprisingly funny. Like...REALLY funny. Laugh out loud stuff.

Season 5 is so good thus far!

Agree with others Season 5 is really shaping up, Between the wanted arc and this 'arc', it's honestly been an amazing season so far.

The town only has 24 people ?

It's a slight self-joke because Beach City -obviously- has more people in it which aren't part of the people we follow in Beach City, but there's only about a couple dozen Beach City citizens that are 'characters' in the show (Steven, Greg, Lars, Sadie, Lars' parents, Jenny, Kiki, Kofi, Nanefua, Mr. Fryman, Peedee, Ronaldo, Harold Smiley, Onion, Sour Cream, Yellowtail, Vidalia, Dewey, Buck, Barbara, Jamie, essentially are the main 'Beach City' residents.)

Wait, people are watching the new episodes? How?
They're available on the official Cartoon Network app and on Video on Demand services from cable providers.

Cartoon Network's website also has the episodes, and all of their content is free-to-watch this weekend. Normally, you would need to log-in with your cable provider's info to see everything, but they've waived that for this weekend.

Check out the episodes here by clicking on Full Episodes. You can also watch other episodes to catch up: http://www.cartoonnetwork.com/video/steven-universe/episodes/index.html

We're 14 episodes away from presumably the end of the show unless cartoon network pulls out a sudden surprise season 6 announcement. Not sure how they'd wrap up everything in that span of time unless theres a TV movie that'll end the show.

Thought the townie bomb was good, but they better kick it into high gear now if this is the end.

Yeah, they wouldn't have introduced
a new conflict between Lapis and Peridot
if the show was ending this season. My guess is that the climax of this season is Pearl
admitting whatever she was going to say to Steven (with my money on her being Pink Diamond's Pearl and also the killer of Pink Diamond).
That leads to her and Steven fusing into Rainbow Quartz 2.0 and defeating this season's main villain. I doubt the Diamonds will show up to Earth this season, so maybe they just beat a returning Aquamarine or a new villain. If it's Aquamarine, then I guess Topaz defects to either join Lars' Off Colors or stay on Earth.

I guess they're setting up for Lapis
to return and probably fuse with Peridot as well. Maybe that's something saved for the beginning of Season 6. Their storyline is probably what's going to solidify the both of them as Crystal Gems.

People have been fearing that Steven Universe is going to end for a while, but really I don't think you have to worry about that. For examples, we only saw the 'Lars death' scene earlier this year, but people saw the storyboard for that scene leaked (out of context) two years ago. They have a slew of episodes already done and CN's scheduling is just spacing them out, IE I'm pretty sure all of Season 5 is already done. There's been no word by CN the show is over and the people who work on SU are still working on the show, probably on S6. More so, S5 is still setting up stuff and doesn't seem to be trying to bring things to a close. If you also look at every other CN cancellation, they usually make the announcement the show is ending way in advance of it actually happening. We're already nearly half-way through Season 5 and there's been no such announcement.

I think there's more evidence there's at least going to be a Season 6 than there is evidence the show is coming to an end with Season 5.

Either way, it would be a rare circumstance. I dont recall CN renewing a show with such short notice. Usually its announced in advance. We havent gotten any news of a renewal since the show started (seasons 4&5 were just a reorganization of 2&3)

Also, sugar has gone on record saying season 3 (now 5) will be written into "one serious corner" which sounds like an ending to me.

those eps werent a bomb, just a two parter. steven bombs werent even a thing back then. i really enjoyed this bomb though with the stand outs being raising the barn and back to the kindergarten, each having to deal with the same theme while other bombs were mostly a few town eps that were meh to ok and the last 2 being plot important eps

as far as I know SU and TTG are still the number 1 and number 2 show CN has ratings wise.
you don't kill off your top rated shows to rebrand and try to get more viewership.
you invest in new shows and hope they take off, and so far they haven't had that.
Ok KO had a good premiere but it's still not on SU or TTG's level.
yes both SU and TTG are down a bit ratings wise, but that has less to do with less viewers wanting to see them, as it does with less viewers wanting to bother with live TV in general. online streaming has really made premiere numbers go down in general.

If the cartoon network app wasn't getting viewers/ wasn't the direction cartoon network wanted to shift... they wouldn't keep doing premieres like this.

but whatever, believe what you want. I mean worst case for you, you get a happy surprise when SU gets renewed for it's super obvious season 6 (given the show is still in production and there is no way in hell season 5 is still in production) while the rest of us will just get to go "finally you announced it CN"

The latest "Steven bomb" was nice. A little too many Beach City episodes, but it was fine, we are used to it. Still, I worry about Lars, and I hope we will get more info soon.

Now, that little scene in Gemcation was interesting (spoilers):
Pearl litteraly can't talk about something. She wants to, but can't, and somehow she stops herself (well, her right hand stops her) from talking a couple times. She is hiding something major about Homeworld (and possibly Pink Diamond), something that is eating her inside, but can't talk about it. It looked forceful: something inside of her is preventing her from speaking, she has to rip off her hand from her mouth several times, but in the end she still can't talk. And from a video I watched on YouTube, this isn't the first time it happened (remember their little excursion on the moon? It happened there too! And also in Steven's Dream. Gemcation is the first episode in which it is made obvious that Pearl is under a kind of geas/spell (possessed?) preventing her from talking - and it is always the right hand which covers her mouth).

We all know that the gems know more than they let on, but in the case of Pearl specifically, there is something huge going on.

Regarding that spoiler...take a look at that character in this year's San Diego Comic Con poster and get your mind blown like I did:
latest

Pearl putting her hands over her mouth is 100% a major thing. Those sneaky bastards, I can't believe we haven't noticed it until now. The fact that it's in the poster is a huge clue that it's something very important and probably something that was done to Pearl to keep her mouth shut.

Regarding that poster...

That's a good catch! I can definitely see Pearl being physically unable to speak about something related to the diamonds becoming a thing this season. Being a Pearl, breaking a direct order by the gem she was created to serve must be extremely difficult, even millennia later. Perhaps she has to try to communicate something to the Crystal Gems by trying to find loopholes in that order...It had never occurred to me that Pearl might know things that she was "programmed" to never divulge, but it makes sense when you see how intense her reaction was when we first learned about the shattering of Pink Diamond. I bet even Garnet might not realize that something is stopping Pearl from talking...

Here's the kicker:
What if it's not something the Diamonds did? What if it's something ROSE did? Rose needed a confidant. One who couldn't reveal secrets even if they were forced to. What better receptacle than a servant who's programmed to do what they're told?

There is one question that I've been asking myself for a long, long time regarding Pearl:

Who was Pearl's owner? All pearls belong to other, high-ranked/nobility gems. One has to wonder if our Pearl was Pink Diamond's... Or if she was White Diamond's. Considering the aforementioned poster which has a white form reminiscent of White Diamond's stained glass portrayal and Pearl's inability to speak about something linked to the Diamonds (and color - after all, our Pearl is white), I wouldn't be surprised to discover that Pearl belonged to White Diamond.

White Diamond's existence has been hinted at subtly numerous times. I have no doubts that her time to show up is near. And that, maybe, she is the one behind Pink Diamond's shattering (well, that almost sounds a little to easy to guess, but it would make sense narratively if her motives come to surface, and if you factor Pearl possibly being White Diamond's ex-pearl and possibly having played a part in Pink Diamond's shattering...).

A friend of mine was bothered that Sadie didn't want to see Lars when Steven said she could go visit whenever. I bought that Sadie was disoriented, but I couldn't disagree that it was weird.

I kind of feel like the Lars situation was too ignored in these episodes. Steven isn't really worried about it. We don't see how it was explained to the Barrigas. Etc.

I really enjoyed these episodes though, and I know Lars will be dealt with. But still, it did feel a little off because it's supposed to be a big deal — he died, he came back to life, he's stranded in space and they have access to him through his head. I love townies episodes and these were great, but I was expecting some development on that front, even if it was just characters talking about it.

I have to imagine that with
Steven and Connie (and Lion) reunited
that
Lars of the Stars
is the very next episode, if not a few episodes from now. From a narrative perspective, the writers needed to
take away Lion
for a few episodes to prevent Steven or someone else from immediately trying to visit Lars. This also gives time for Lars to
turn into his new badass self.

My guess is that the leaked title called "Reunited" that everyone thought referred to these episodes might actually be referring to the next arc where
Steven and Connie reunite with not just Lars, but also Lapis. A current fan theory has the planet that we see Stevonnie crashing towards in the SDCC footage is actually the planet Lapis ran away to. So Lars of the Stars leads directly into them discovering Lapis, who (after singing Escapism) eventually agrees to return to Earth or at the very least get Steven and Connie back to Earth. Is it convenient that they would land on the one planet in space with Lapis on it? Yes, but this is also the show that had Navy plummet from space onto Earth and somehow land directly in front of Steven's house.
