My current job is in my area that is accounting but the accountant doesn't give a fuck and we do a lot of...kinda illegal stuff and that is not going to help me at all for my next job.

But you can say you worked in accounting. A lot of times, interships have that problem, that they don't teach you much, but they help in the resume because they, at least, certify that you have related experience to pass the first filter.
I have my first job now, and despite going through two internships, I'm learning new stuff. It's expected, so don't fret much.

You can supply that with your own skills, because whatever first job you land they will have to train you.

I want to echo this plus add that showing you worked an internship shows you have the people skills and ability to work in an office (or other based on internship) environment. It's a great way to show "hey you don't have to let me go within the first six month probation period and lose a bunch of money".

been in a new job since February 2017, pretty chilled and good job, massive restructure announced and I have been informed I now must do a job that I never signed up for. I now am at the point where after 10 years here I will need to find a brand new job. ( The job itself is a job I left for this one - caused me to suffer major depression and have suicidal thoughts}.

I'm 31, engaged and my fiancee were literally about to put a deposit on a house. I have never been University but I have been given an unconditional offer to do Computer Science at University (did it as precautionary measure as rumors about job changes have been rampant).

I do have a job interview at the same place for a much better job, also possibly another person has also asked to swap into my new position and both he and I and our new managers have said it would ok to swap but it has dawned upon me that I need to get out this place asap.

sorry for the rant all

Still unemployed (since November.)

Unemployment insurance is going to run out soon. I've had so many promising job interviews only to hear nothing back or if I do it's to inform me that they're moving forward with another candidate.

I wish they were more constructive with their feedback.

That blows, no way around it. I'm in a depression/rut myself with applying for jobs. Feels like I'm spinning my wheels.

So I spent roughly 4 hours yesterday shifting through potential jobs and I finally found one that I'm interested in, massage therapist. They get paid pretty good, there's a 2 year course available not too far from where I live and I'm going to talk with a former student of the school about tuition and potentially job shadowing. Hopefully the talk goes over well and I can apply ASAP.

I hate looking for jobs man, got about two more months to find something before it being a massive hassle/changing my prospects hugely.

But holy shit gotta be careful out here when researching places that are hiring. Found one that seemed great, low housing costs (for a huge reason) and high pay. Turns out the reason why it was at the extreme edge of the exclusion zone for the Fukushima nuclear disaster area... Like I get why someone would start a business there for all the cheapness there is to set up over there now, but geeze if you google the town its one of the areas that got hit hardest back in 2011.

feels like I'll never find a decent job.

are you working in japan (on a visa is my assumption).

what are the websites to go to if you are looking for a job there ? (general jobs or specific jobs).

depending on your nationality, there should be some sites for expats or foreigners' forums where they mingle and share info.

Yeah I live here at the moment and while I'm not 100% dying to stay I'd rather it at the moment. As for places I've been looking, the usual sites like gaijinpot, daijob, indeed and a few others. Problem is I need full time employment since im not married/looking to get married anytime soon. To a Japanese person that is. The issue/annoyance I'm having is sifting through the bs ad offers and finding what seem like legit offers.

Also seems like a lot of the english message boards and forms here for expats are pretty.... hostile/jaded old men who hate their lives and by in turn everyone else lol so I stay away from them. But maybe there could be some hints there too.

Was fired five months ago from a well-paying job, and struggled for way, way too long to find employment. Every job in the field I had worked for, despite great interviews constantly unceremoniously would not select me. I'm not sure if that's because the HR division from my prior employer kept selling me out, but I finally got a job in the amusement industry which was what I worked in before hospitality.

Which was fun at first but now I'm faced with the reality of the gigantic pay cut and the lack of hours. I'm struggling to get 40 hours thanks to the scheduling being ran by self-admitted favoritism and performance-based incentives. (pretty much you have to get your leads and GMs to like you) It's non-union so there's not much I can do. This is messing insanely with my anxieties and not to mention eventually will incur wrath on my financials down the line. I'm still nervous about searching for other work since I was faced with nothing but rejection and not to mention that most hospitality jobs start on-call anyways. The whole thing about applications and interviews being, as OP puts it, exhausting and soul-crushing makes me all the more reluctant.

Feel like I'm in-between a rock-and-a-hard place when it comes to work. I just want my old pay and steady hours back, but capitalism, man. It sucks.

so for you, my suggestion is that you need to be open with all sorts of intel. i think there may be subreddits too in you vicinity (if its a big prefecture).

1. you need to get the reality that you may not get your old salary back. it is what it is, and its business. they (corporate and/or your managers) may not see the 'value' in you anymore, thus the predicament you are in.

2. if you're getting that anxiety, ask yourself what's the way you can deal with it realistically. its too late to say that you gotta be adaptable, but look at the worse case scenario and if possible, start looking for a new job (or rather, it may be time to look for one if you can see the writing on the wall). no such thing as company loyalty (in america).

I filed for unemployment yesterday, hopefully I put all the info correctly: my W2 stub shows a different address than where I work, so I just put both.

Depending on how much they send me, it would be prudent for me not to accept any jobs that pay equal to or lower than what I get from unemployment checks, otherwise what's the point?

That said, my next concern will be what to do about insurance. My termination letter has details for COBRA, but I want to try to find the cheapest alternative since it would only be for me.

After being turned down for a couple of jobs that seemed like good fits, I started asking for more detailed feedback after getting a rejection. Didn't always work but a couple of recruiters called me back with notes from the hiring manager.

So felt like I needed to tell my story. I've been out of work now for 2 months. I left my previous job at the start of March as I'd gotten a new job in the US and was just waiting on the Visa clearance which I was assured would come very quickly from their past experience. So moved home to be with the parents before I headed over.

Then I got word from the company that there was a slight delay and it would be just another week more. Every week since then I've been getting the same response from them and they have no idea when they will get clearance for the Visa. Seems the whole company is affected and they can't provide the visa they have been for years due to the new administration.

In the meantime, I'm going to do some technical and project management certs while I'm waiting but also looking at different options to get over to the US. Not looking forward to the job search again especially when it seems that Visa's into the US is becoming problematic.

Anyone have any similar stories regarding E2 Visa's or idea's on companies that actively hire and sponsor EU workers in the Technology consulting area?

I was asked to complete a task over the weekend, after an in person interview.
I sent over a 50 slide presentation on Monday morning, but i still haven't received a word. How long would you say I should give this 100+ person company before i start asking if they received my email?
I literally heard no word after I sent it in. Getting stressed.

so, 2 things.

1. if you did a 50 page slide, you just did free labor and you got suckered for doing it and should not have done it. that's my anecdotal experience. never do something for free. must be a startup.

2. you got suckered in doing a free job and probably won't hear back from them. i guarantee it.

They are a fairly big company, and they asked me not to spend much time on it. It was my decision to go ahead and overdeliver.

Hopefully you're wrong.
What about when to follow up on it?

i'f i'm wrong, i'm wrong. it is what it is.

expect something by friday, if not, monday follow up is best. i usually give them 1 week to make a decision then i move on. (business days).

a 100 person company really isn't big if you ask me. it is still small scale / startup.

You might need to consult boards or forums native to your geography.

For e2, i know you are skilled, but not highly skilled or talented for the e3 or e4 visa. Its probably also due to the stricter controls on how visas are being give out (h1b for ex). The higher you are in the e type visas, yhe more prominence you have. Justification for an e2 is harder these days imo no thanks to the current administration.

It's actually not a company but an agency, part of a global conglomerate. I've worked in larger places, but 100 people for an agency office is pretty established.
I'll keep you posted.

Don't want to freak you out but I just went through a month long, 6 interview process and I still didn't get the job.

I honestly thought I had nailed it by the second one, so there's really no rhyme or reason with some places.

I did four interviews to get my current job, and the whole process took a bit under a month. I'd give them two weeks before following up.

During that time, I also interviewed 3+ times with a couple other companies and didn't get those jobs. One of them was super slow on follow ups and didn't speed things up until after I told them I had an offer.

So quick overview, I had a phone interview with someone in the company's HR department, in a week I had an in person interview that went FANTASTIC. Great job, meshed well with the people, fit in with what the company does. Next day I scheduled a second interview with some more people in two weeks. That second interview was a little more mixed because it was more management than boots on the floor, which is fine. I talked to the person hiring and they said they'd contact me "soon" (after I said if it'd be a week or two). It's been a week since that second interview. I guess I'm just too anxious and worried for my own good?

If I were to guess, your next session will consist of a panel of interviews with people of various levels and disciplines, which will require a lot of people's schedules to sync up before it can be scheduled. That's most likely why it takes so long.

The only thing throwing it off is the "soon," which could possibly be a bad sign (as opposed to a set or even vague timeframe when you should hear back). I've read that it's good practice to ask about next steps and when to expect them in each interview. But, really, there no way to tell what's really going on. I'd give another week and follow up.

Trying to hang tough with a shitty job while you're trying to interview elsewhere is the pits. I've gotten nothing but rejection emails for the last few weeks, but even if I were getting interviews scheduled, I doubt I'd be able to get time off for them.

I asked off for one day for my wedding anniversary this coming weekend (literally the 4th day I asked off work in the 8 months I've worked here) and my boss is making me come in on a Saturday to make it up. Needless to say trying to get in time to interview, hell, even do basic shit during business hours like get my car serviced, or get a hair cut, or go to the doctor, is next-to-impossible without getting a passive aggressive text from the boss, or an unexpected Saturday shift.

The good part is my wife and I are considering moving cross-country, so some of the jobs I'm applying for are a couple hours ahead. Makes it easy to wake up at 6am my time, do a phone interview, and still finish up before work. And I'm definitely having better luck with interviews out of state, because the place I'm living in now is very high-population and has a competitive job market - I've gotten nothing but rejection emails from stuff I like in this area.

Are your rejection emails because you're using a far away mailing address? Once I changed my mailing address to a friend closer by I got way more interest in my resume.

Not from what I can tell. The places I've applied to here are within a 20 minute drive away, and I live in an area where commuting to larger cities is pretty common. Interestingly I've had more luck getting bites from applying out of state.

so yesterday was my last day. Was sad to say bye to everyone, being at the company for almost 5 years.
Redundancy sucks but the company is a sinking ship.

Going to be a drag now trying to find a job!!

It really is

I'm going to work on my resume and start applying for something different, though I should probably look into going back to school. It'll take some time, but would be better in the long run.

Interviews have always been my weak point because I get nervous and don't present myself well. I'm lucky that I was able to get my current job through a friend who recommended me, because I'm so bad at the interview process.

Welcome to basically all expat forums. They leave their home countries because nothing will satisfy them, and they bring that shit attitude with them abroad. Of course nothing will change. This is why, despite being an expat, I almost never meet or hang out with them.

According to Vern and others, they're even worse in China ;)

In further good news, the company I was talking to actually emailed me yesterday to set up more interviews with another team. They're not done with me yet!

After being made redundant from a job in IT after working there for over fifteen years, I decided to use the money to go into an industry I was always passionate about but couldn't work out how to make it a realistic proposition. Just finished three years doing a degree course in TV and Film Production at my local university.

Had our course's End Of Year Show, screening all our Final Major Projects at the local Film Festival.
A literary agency has decided to take me on to help publish some of my work in the industry.
Also been offered a new part-time job working at a local art company as part of the production crew, helping put on the shows and curating new events.
The BBC want to discuss with me further about moving forward the development some of my scripts I submitted to the BBC Writers Room earlier this year.

Seems like all the hard work has finally starting to pay off, if anyone told me three years ago while working my dull IT job, where I am now I would tell them to stop smoking crack :)
In addition, the university where I did my course, have offered me some freelance teaching in the subject I took to teach the students and help pay for my teaching qualifications.

Be positive everyone, hard graft and a touch of good luck will go a long way.

I'm struggling a bit with my approach to try and get a work visa / internship in the states.

Anyone got any tips to land an internship in the states (NYC) or a H1B visa?

To get an internship, you need a J1 visa. But you cannot get a J1 visa before you've found an internship. Most places I've searched don't look at international applicants unless they already have permit. So you're stuck in limbo. There is then the option to pay for the Visa yourself, but I'm struggling on how to make a cover letter / application that hints at that I can pay for my own visa, but of course I'd like it if the place I'd be interning would pay for it.

I'm not sure what approach I should take. I'd like to eventually be able to work in New York permanently, but getting a H1B visa seems very difficult.

Had a great interview last week (Tuesday), got another interview lined up just waiting to hear a date.

But the waiting is killing me, my productivity at my current job is rock bottom..... I'm extremely anxious.......

Gah.... waiting fucking sucks

Passed on the interview I had yesterday after researching the company more. Tons of bad reviews and shady goings on. Company dorms/temporary housing for new hires that need it being an empty office among other things... no thanks.

For lovers
Hi y'all. Posted here a few months back but figured I would give an update, especially since I need to vent a little bit.

So, I'm a full-time grad student in a fairly tough program. Because of this, during the school year I've found that I can work ~25 hrs/week max without it affecting my grades. I found a job working for the government that pays extremely well and is flexible in hours with exams and what not.

Unfortunately, many of my duties rely on researchers working in schools, and obviously there aren't as many in the summer. Because of this, my boss told me about a month ago that my hours would be cut during the summer. Understandable, but a tad frustrating as she told me right before final paper/exam season, which means I had neither the time nor energy to look for other jobs.

Now that exam season is over and I'm looking for other jobs, the problem I'm running into is that I have to put in 10-12 hours/week over the summer if I want to go back to the normal hours in the fall, which obviously limits my availability for other jobs. I want to keep this job because of the aforementioned reasons, but I dunno if I'll be able to. Furthermore, in order to keep my income at a similar rate to what I'm making now, whatever other job I take has to pay around $15/hr (less than my current job, but I'd be taking on more hours).

Just sucks. I should have been on the ball months ago, but I had no idea that my hours would be cut.

I wish companies wouldn't fear telling you why they aren't hiring you. After a recruiter contacted me based on my LinkedIn profile, I had a great initial phone call, the job was literally the perfect thing for me, fitting my skills, experience, and passion, even my side projects I did at home, and that came out in the call. I was told to send my resume, that I would be considered for two positions. I sent in my resume, and six days later, "Unfortunately, we have decided not to move forward with your candidacy." They must have not liked something about my resume, I wish I knew what.

Another time, I had gone through three phone interviews, things seemed going great, and they had me take a technical test, given a task to write a program and given three days to do it (basically, it was to recreate something the company had already done, and I replicated it exactly). I sent in the program the next day, and was told that they literally had never received a better interview test. A week later, "You aren't what we are looking for".

Today I have my hearing scheduled in a few hours, where I'm to appear in front of a board of...people I guess...and present an official record of my side of the story following my termination.

From what I gathered this is just a chance for me to "make a case" about why I felt the firing was unfair. It doesn't sound like this will actually do anything for me: they keep a record and that's it, no appeal for re-hire or anything. What I'm hoping to get out of this is specific details on WHY they let me go: I was put into a PIP for two months, I was told directly by my supervisor that I had no more glaring issues to iron out by the time I was done, and I was given pretty much total assurance that I had turned things around. I don't know if I'll actually get an answer from whoever I speak to, but I decided it was best to do this for the sake of closure.

But I'm still utterly sickened and terrified to do this. It feels like I'm going on trial. Worse still, what I'm especially afraid of is if whoever I talk to responds with "Well actually, according to this list...." and starts naming off mistakes and incidents that are probably accurate but also things that were not brought to my attention (or clarified over how important the mistakes were).

I basically am worried about being humiliated. I kept a positve outlook following my termination but I'm worried this is going to stomp it down.

If there's nothing to gain from showing up don't go. You don't owe them anything and if they aren't paying you for your time I don't see the point in going, especially if it's going to bring you down.
