Proving it was the little show that could, Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has successfully concluded its fifth season and is renewed for a sixth, premiering in Summer 2019. In the process, through superior pacing and movie quality visual effects, it overcame a rough start with an uneven airing schedule and a holding pattern in the name of movie continuity (#itsallconnected) to become the best comic book-based series broadcast TV has ever seen. With a year to go, it's a great time to fill the gap by revisiting the long journey these characters have taken in the last five years:
  • Coulson: Ready for a new adventure, unaware of the secrets behind his survival following his encounter with Loki
  • Ward: The ace agent with excessive childhood trauma
  • Skye: An orphan trying to find her identity and place in the world
  • Fitz: Guy with an accent
  • Simmons: Girl with an accent
  • May: The bus driver who holds the secret to eternal youth
We will be aiming to watch 2-3 episodes each week. This thread will be updated with the current week's suggested viewing. You can also view the suggested viewing schedule here courtesy of Danthrax.

  • This thread is for discussion of the series, by people watching the series. Do not derail the thread with commentary unrelated to the plot of the show.
  • As we welcome new viewers as well as long time series fans, do not openly discuss events that happen beyond episodes we have not yet watched. Any such discussion should either fall in clearly marked spoiler tags, or better, posted in the Season 5 OT.
  • It's a magical place.

The absolute best place to watch is on Netflix, where Seasons 1-4 are available in many regions. (Season 5 will be available on Netflix on Sunday, June 17, 2018.) The show is also available for purchase on many streaming services such as Google Play or Amazon Video. If you prefer physical media, unfortunately not all seasons are available in all regions, but you should be able to obtain at least seasons 1 and 2 on Blu-Ray or DVD wherever you are.

Unfortunately, it seems not all countries have the above options. If there are any avenues I missed, please let us know!

I doubt I'll be rewatching it right now (rewatched S1 right before S5 started) but I'll be following the thread to read impressions from new and returning viewers alike.

T.R.A.C.K.S. was the episode where I really began liking the show. I kinda tolerated up until that point (and probably almost quit tbh). I am happy I stuck around, as it turned into something amazing.

Good job on the thread OP.

Might not watch the episodes on the exact day that they're scheduled, but I'll try to keep up within a few days or so, so I can be a part of the conversation and help constantly bump this thread (I cannot allow the people of ERA to forget this show exists!). Hopefully we get a few new viewers to take part in this as well.

I really liked that episode. I thought it was pretty clever. Didn't Fitz pretend to be an American tourist on the train? Or was that Hunter in a much later episode?

Glad to hear you're enjoying it! Season 2 is awesome stuff. I'm looking forward to revisiting it. My entertainment time is so limited that I'm not even sure I can stick to the schedule myself.

Feel free to comment as you watch (behind spoiler tags), as I'm sure me and many others love hearing what first-time viewers think!

I already rewatched the first two seasons right before the third pod of Season 4, so probably won't be rewatching just yet. Also, Agents of SHIELD isn't actually available in New Zealand, which really sucks :(

I probably won't be able to follow the schedule exactly but I'll try. I haven't actually rewatched any of the series beyond the odd episode that popped up in syndication.

Good thread, StarCreator!

In the schedule I came up with that's linked to in the OP, I do note where the movie tie-ins happen. You can watch them in between the appropriate episodes of Agents of SHIELD but it's not necessary for rewatching the show (especially if you've already seen the movies — if you haven't, you might actually want to watch them, especially Captain America Winter Soldier when we get there). Probably the least necessary movie that I make note of is Doctor Strange, which I added to the schedule because the magic it introduces is seen in many of the episodes that follow. It's thematic, basically. (It's also cool to see practically the same special effects for magic used between the movie and the show.)

The schedule gets a bit iffy with episodes scheduled for Christmas and New Year's Day. That's just how things fell, and I'm sure once we get there, people will decide to watch those a day early or a day late. Really, nothing in the schedule needs to be watched on the day denoted, it's all more of a general guideline to keep everyone on roughly the same track.

I hope the schedule works well for this rewatch and that everyone has fun with it =)

I'm in. Count me among those who thought the first half of season 1 was still pretty good, though it clearly gets way better later on.

I started a re watch of this a few months ago, up to 1x17. Maybe you'll catch up to me in a few months. Don't think I'll re watch 4 and 5 though too fresh in my mind.

some general non-spoiler thoughts.
-good binge watch much better knowing what's to come
-I wouldn't skip any episodes if you're a fan already, all have some good character moments etc
-holy hell they used to do location shooting every episode

I liked the series since Ep. 1, I have no regrets. Will rewatch for sure, season 4 Blu-ray has been pre-ordered already.

Kinda looking forward to those early episodes, they were simpler, more innocent times. :P
Also, higher budget. They actually had location shoots in Paris, Stockholm etc as opposed to season 5's endless hallways.

I originally mentioned that the schedule suggested watching 1-2 episodes on Tuesdays and Fridays but it might be a bit much to try to force such a rigid schedule over a full year. I think for the purpose of keeping the thread moving I'm going to stick with weekly goals posted on Tuesdays, and people have a little more freedom to pick a viewing day or two a week that works better for them.

Went ahead and watched the Pilot. Really enjoyed it the first time around and still think it's a pretty fun start to the series.

Good Coulson moments.

"Under people skills she drew a... I think it's a little poop. With knives sticking out of it.

That's bad, right?"

Wish Cobie Smulders would've had more appearances throughout the series.

So the schedule starts tomorrow, but should I hold off on actually kicking off weekly updates until Friday? (Episodes 1-3 are the first "update", but I'm still posting them in thread when we begin in earnest just so we have easily visible weekly milestones.) I'm leaning toward just sticking with Tuesdays, but wanted to see what others thought.

Also, for what it's worth, I remember liking these episodes as I was making the preview images. But time has proven that to be a minority opinion, even among fans of the show.

Let's get this started!

This week we are watching Season 1, Episodes 1-3.

nsamAWD.png

Agent Phil Coulson (who survived his apparent death during the Attack on the Helicarrier) assembles a team of agents (Melinda May, Grant Ward, Leo Fitz, and Jemma Simmons) to investigate a superhuman, Mike Peterson.

71LB0at.png

Coulson and his S.H.I.E.L.D. agents travel to Peru to investigate an object of unknown origin, codenamed 0-8-4. But when he runs into Comandante Camilla Reyes, more than just sparks fly at 30,000 feet.

QcX56iU.png

When the brilliant scientist, Dr. Franklin Hall, is kidnapped, Agent Coulson and his S.H.I.E.L.D. agents must race against the clock to locate him. Skye is their only way in–pushing the team to their limits when the entire plan turns upside-down.

Can't really remember, do they explore the similarities between
centipede serum and extremis? Looked very similar shining through Mike's skin, and the one dude exploded...

It's fun going back and watching these old ones. Bigger budget and a nice reminder of how these characters used to act. They have definitely grown a ton.

Trailer for the episode. Apparently time travel exists, because a bunch of the comments on that YouTube page seem to be talking about the future of the show.

Started rewatching about 3 weeks ago so my girlfriend can get into the series. Now midway through S02, train's not stopping!

I remembered these first few episodes were kinda bland-ish, but on rewatch, they do really well to establish the relationships between characters and to take us through the beginnings of the growth as a team. Even though the per-episode plots weren't always great, there's almost always a nice payoff to the storylines that start here. Love this show.

Thoughts from episode one:
  • Where is Black Panther's action figure? What, did this take place five years ago or something?
  • Oh shit, Maria Hill in ep1! At this rate we must be getting Steve Rogers or Tony Stark by the season finale.
  • Another oh shit, Coulson lives!
  • Tahita sounds like a magical place.
  • RIsing Tide seems like a huge threat...
  • Maria likes drawing pictures of poop with knifes sticking out of it.
  • This Sky chick seems annoying, I hope she's not part of the main cast or anything. Multiple seasons of her would get really tiresome.
  • They named their plane "Bus" just to confuse the hell outta everyone.
  • What type of an agent calls a gun a "Night-Night gun". Is Shield full of 8 year olds?
  • Now which one is Fitz and which is Simmons....
  • Coulson + Lola= Cola... I'm shipping them real hard.
  • Wait, The Rising Tide is this bitch?!? Lame. And how did she get caught so easily? Does she not use a VPN?
  • Also, where does she poop? Does she just squat out the window or does she own a bucket?
  • Sky should've gone and asked Ward his social security number when he had the truth serum. Easier than hacking.
  • Phil risking everyone's safety for one man is incredible reckless for a higher-up at Shield.

I give the episode one thumbs up and a wink.

In for this. Basically binged Season 1-3 a couple years ago, so I didn't retain much of it other than the fact that I enjoyed it immensely. I binged Season 4 (and early Season 5) more recently so it's pretty fresh in my memory. Looking forward to spreading this out over a full year and getting more time to digest each episode.

Decided to wait until summer to binge watch this so I can watch along with my friend who will just now be starting it after our finals.

Excited to get him hooked.

Finished episode 1. Ward seems like a real hero, can't wait to see him become the heart and soul of the group like Cap.

Haha.

Episode 1 was good. Different experience watching it after having years of growing attached to these characters.

I enjoyed the humor more than I remember. Very cheesy but Coulson and Skye get some good lines (being an Iron Man groupie, etc.). It's also fun to see a much more hectic and nervous Fitz. Makes you appreciate how much that character has evolved (and the acting to go with it).

Just watched epsiode 1. Great tone to start, adventurous!

I liked Skye's opening speech about how the Battle of New York made S.H.I.E.L.D. pretty much public, but also started making existing powered people pretty much notable who probably were just a rumor on the streets, urban legends, all-covered up, etc.
When they do the series finale or the character retires I hope she does a closing speech too.

Random thoughts:
  • Mike crawling up a building Wonder Woman-style :V
  • Maybe Skye met Uncle Ben before dying but interrupted mid-phrase?
  • When do those cool comic covers for the episodes begin to appear?
