We say Apple just catched up with best Androïd phones with the X, which is true.

But it's competitors, who now need to play catch up next year:
  • 120hz screen with true tone & 3D Touch,
  • Kinect included,
  • Better processor, speakers, haptics,
  • Better HW & SW optimizations, to achieve good battery in a smaller form factor
Apple engineers deserve serious praise.

It's a real shame all that hardware is coupled with ios.

I have this unpopular opinion that clear cases, while letting you see the phone, look bad and really cheapen the phone's looks. I've used most of my iPhones naked, most of the time, and when I tried a clear case it really didn't cut it. If I'm using a case I'm gonna own it.

120Hz is only the touch sampling refresh rate, unfortunately. ProMotion stays exclusive to the iPad Pro. I'm just saying because usually when "120hz screen" is said, it's about its picture refresh rate.

What's wrong with iOS? I have both an iPhone X and the Pixel 2 XL in my possession and for 99% of the time I feel like I'm doing the same shit on them with the same kind of experience.

I do have to say I am impressed with the Pixel 2 XL because it's just as smooth as an iDevice now. My last time with an Android device it felt like the screen would have a delayed response which is gone now .

Yeah I hate how this looks. Discord devs, what the fuck are you doing?

Isn't this literally against the App Store TOS?

I've always felt the same way that clear cases cheapen the phones look, but my mom wanted a clear case this time, so I ordered her the Caudabe Crystal Lucid Clear X case and it's actually pretty nice.

Looks practically invisible on the silver model, has no branding, adds almost no bulk or weight. It's the first clear case I've seen that doesn't ruin the look of the phone, you can barely tell it's there.

With my phone I tried to go naked the first few days but I just couldn't do it, caved and bought the Apple silicone case.

Shipping from China! Looks like I'll get it by the 16th when the original window was the 17th-24th.

This is the first time I've upgraded in a while, is there a simple process to transfer everything over to the new phone or is it more complicated? Thanks in advance.

Anyone else have Ray Bans with G15 tinted lenses? I have a pair of Clubmasters with them and Face ID absolutely refuses to work when I'm wearing them.

I may try that case then as an option as I always hated clear cases as well.

They've had an nfc chip on board for a few generations and there's no api for it.

It's decent but no front protective lip - caudabe have said they are looking at reworking it to give more lip.

I think it's the only clear case that doesn't detract too much from the phone, but you need a screen protector with it for now.

To be fair how much have you used NFC? I've had Android phones since the beginning. I was literally flashing roms and tweaking on my HTC devices a decade ago.

I used NFC one time to transfer a picture...took more time than using messaging lol. Seriously though what do you use NFC with? I'm curious.

After using a 5c for the last 4 years the battery on this thing is a godsend. My phone would usually be in the final 25% by this point in my shift after a full charge and the X is still over 60% starting the day at 90%.

Can't for the life of me make Face ID unlock while I'm holding the phone horizontally. No amount of Passcode training seem to do anything. Is it a technical limitation or am I just unsightly sideways?

Turning the phone while it's trying it's thing unlocks instantly.

FaceID will only work in portrait, not landscape. So yes it is a technical limitation

I have a bunch of chips with things like guest wifi. In my truck when I want to launch a navigation app. At home, to start netflix.

With faceid for authentication that'd be so legit.

Is there anyone who might have an idea why on FaceID unlock you have to slide from the bottom of the screen to go to the home screen?

I'm not talking about doing the gesture itself (helps prevent accidentally going to the home screen when you're looking at notifications or the time, etc.), but my hands are what I'd say are pretty average in terms of size and the way I hold the X I have to scoot the phone down in my hand from my natural holding position to reach the bottom of the screen with my thumb to unlock. The extra size of the display is also at play here.

I remember when they changed the slide to unlock notch to slide anywhere to unlock and it was an improvement, of course they then moved to the press the home button to unlock (or TouchID to unlock if it was enabled, but the same button) and now the removal of the home button has nessesitated another change to the unlock function.

I just don't see the disadvantage of making it more generous with regards to what counts as an unlock. There nothing more depressing than FaceID working perfectly and than failing to complete the unlock gesture to a a level that satisfies iOS and watching the UI elements do their little giggle.

This is probably less the Pixel 2 XL than the fact that the latest version of Android finally put UI animations on their own thread, so that they remain at a high framerate instead of competing for processor time with whatever else is going on. It's surprising it took Google 10 years to change that.

I'll check mine when I get home. I tend to wear some American Optical pilot sunglasses and I have issues with them, sometimes. Inside they are hit or miss inside but outside I'm not having much luck. It seems like it's works better closer to my face.

Consistency in what is basically the "go to home screen" gesture, that is used also from apps (and where that generosity couldn't be applied for obvious reasons). Obviously you need to be able to do that gesture comfortably within apps as well, so making it easier to do from the lock screen only doesn't fix much, more of a band aid.

Don't know why I lurk this thread everytime it's on the top page. I will never be able to afford an iPhone X, lol. Still rocking an iPhone 6 despite how sluggish it runs now.

I have a Pixel2 xl as well. And at least for me it's The little things.

  1. I scale my text and UI super tiny. You kinda can change font in ios but apps need to support, but this doesn't affect web rendering. For example this site everything looks gigantic vs the pixel.
  2. I use the stock twitter app often and for some reason it reloads really often on iOS and the startup load is way longer than android. Also it's sharing functionality is limiting, like I can't from another app share to a direct message on Twitter.
  3. Discord app is wack on iOS. Doesn't save your history.
  4. Notifications are trash still. Can't even clear all notifications unless you have a certain amount of them. So confusing.
  5. Notch is fine but it's existence removed tons of useful stuff like bt battery and percentage number. Have to reach for the control center which isn't easy to get to holding with left hand.
  6. No splitscreen which is this little thing that I never realized I liked lol. Just nice watching a yt video while doing other stuff.

I can see why it would make sense to keep a consistent gesture for what is essentially the same function. I hardly ever seem to fail to return home when I'm using the phone, but it has happened multiple times taking the phone out of my pocket and swiping up. I really need to test it with gloves as that really decreases the fidelity of my fingers, for want of a better term.

I suppose it's a slightly different use case given you're coming in 'cold' when you're unlocking the phone so that may play into the failure rate I've been experiencing. Being more likely to use my thumb than my index finger plays into it too, now I think about it. I just feels a tad harsher than it needs to be, I guess I'll just need to see if it improves with more time spent with the phone.

The weirdest thing about the Discord app issues is it's made with React Native, so it should theoretically work the same across both iOS and Android.

Use icab and tweetbot to solve your first 2 points. As I previously told you, the battery widget is a more convenient way to see battery percentage of all your ios devices, just need to swipe left. Your last point is also adressed with iCab.

AirBnB and iCab were just updated.

iCab is the best web browser on the planet, I can't think of a feature it doesn't have.

I just bought iCab on a whim without any research. Love it. Except for one thing, which is kind of a dealbreaker for me. But maybe I just missed a setting: is there any way to make iCab behave as all other Standard iOS apps in so far, that a swipe from the left edge to the right brings you back, and a swipe from the right edge to the left is a step forwards?
I managed to deactivate the quick switch between tabs but..

Thx in advance and - first post! Long-time lurker at the old place..

I have a pair and it initially didn't work, but over the course of a few days it learned to look for them. Similar to the beard technology I presume.

I have had the X and 3 - 8's since 10/08 and I am still not active on T-Mobile. I am switching from ATT and this is the most comical conversion ever.

Last name spelled wrong and SSN wrong even though the did a valid credit check.

Bring SSN card to be faxed to fraud at T-Mobile... sorry sir we don't have a fax machine... go to Harlem/Irving store.

Done it will be two hours and they will call you. No call... but I get a text that my new phone is ready to go.

Call up and name and SSN wrong... hung up

Called yesterday...same! Today... same!

Going to store and if they don't fix it now, I'm sending everything back and fighting a restocking fee!

That did it. Thanks. Now never enable ads on this website ^^

Hope it works out. Let us know how it goes.

To close the loop on this, this is what I did to make it work:
- Full back up of old phones on iTunes
- Wipe the X
- Move SIM to X
- Let the X and old phone sync up
- Do a restore from itunes to X
- Do a sync with itunes

That's the workflow that made things smooth for me. What I think might have happened was that I forgot my apple password and had to change it at something which might have complicated the process. Either way, on the X now.

Having used the X for a few days now, I will upgrade to a Plus sized version as soon as it's available. I'm hopeful apps and sites soon take advantage of the new screen size which might help curb the wanting for a Plus sized phone. Thanks again for your help!

I tried it with a pair of Wayfairers that also have the same tint and same results. It's not even failing it's more like the phone isn't registering that I am looking at it. I wonder if the tint is too dark for it to penetrate? Only sunglasses that I have a problem with.

Still hesitant about spending for a browser especially for iOS where you can't set default browser.

Does App store have any return policy?

Face ID definitely works when tilted 90 degrees to the right.. but for some reason doesn't work when tilted to the left.

Edit: maybe not. Just tested it again and it works when tilted about 85 degrees.. but no more.

A sort-of workaround on 1 is that you can put many web sites in Safari into a text-only mode (lines button in left side of URL bar), and when you do that there's a style button on the right side ("A" icon) that lets you reduce the font size. For 2, Tweetbot is so much better than the stock app, as long as you don't care about Twitter polls. Agreed on the rest. The lack of battery percentage and the lack of easy CC access is a continual irritation.

I think Twitterrific is great but I definitely don't like how Twitter doesn't let them use all the APIs. I don't even have the official twitter app installed so my choices are Twitterrific which is great but not complete or the mobile site which is complete but a giant pile of shit

Having an issue with my X. Hulu will not load at all. I just get a white screen and nothing loads. Could've sworn it worked before 11.1.1
