Press A to cool doesn't seem fun. This one's difficulty seems tailored for 3 years old.

Also it's 2018 and we still have people defending gyro in portable mode.

Because throwing a rapid ball was very difficult in the previous game ? Come on now. Once you know how to hunt there is next to zero challenge.

This looks really nice—seeing Kanto in HD makes me very excited. I'm a little skeptical about the catching and the wild Pokemon, but I'm willing to give it a shot. Full price for this might be a little much though.

I'm getting a switch for my birthday in September. Once more it appears that my Nintendo console will be a Zelda box. Here's hoping that 2019 Pokémon game is more in line with expectations.

thread was locked so I'll post this here
original thread
https://www.resetera.com/threads/po...the-series-alive-with-pokémon-let’s-go.45719/

my response:

was it ever dying in the first place?

EDIT: to add more to my post

I get the "expanding audience" argument, but I still think this is the wrong way to go about it. not from a conceptual standpoint but one of overall design. a large chunk of the Go audience aren't ones to buy consoles, and ones that are either already play pokemon or have "outgrown" pokemon. the ones that dont buy consoles, I dont see them jumping ship for this, Go placates them just fine. the group who do buy consoles and still play pokemon, will get the games regardless (whether it's Let's Go or Gen 8). the last group, well you'll need to change up pokemon dramatically to get them back, BotW/God of War style. dangling "remember kanto" aint gonna get them to bite, me-thinks

and then there's the lapsed fans, who're in the first and third catagory (and maybe a 4th: dont play games anymore at all). making a game that's even simpler might get them back, but I feel like that's only part of the problem. the other part being the gameplay style just not being compelling enough to keep them around. once again, changes would have to be made to get them back. whether it's making Pokemon more like contemporary turn-based RPGs, or changing genre all together

Putting those all side by side really highlights how far GameFreak needs to go with the 2019 game

I'm excited for the addition to the franchise. A new maineline Pokemon title is arriving next year, so that's good, too.

It's disappointing to see the rampant whining and overreactions from folks but it's also expected. People today want everything their way, right away, without exception or face the shit storm of disapproval. It's embarrassing to come on and read some of these takes. It's like this game (and others that you don't like) is killing you.

So why is your positive opinion on the game worth more than someone else's negative opinion? Are they not allowed to voice those? Come on now.

I honestly can't see how this is anything more than a stripped down Pokemon game with half assed Go mechanics slotted in where the real meat is supposed to be.

All they had to do was remake Kanto to win back nostalgia fans. Why go to the extreme of dumbing literally everything else down?

The appeal of Go wasn't the shit battle mechanics or "wow I can flick a ball across a screen to catch a Pokemon"

It was going out with your mates to track down a rare Pokemon in the real world and meet up with other fans and socialize, none of which LGP/E does.

Have they confirmed it's only the original 151 + new one (and some alola forms)? Or is it specifically Kanto only and could therefore have ones that belong in Kanto like Munchlax, Elekid, Slowking, Kingdra, Pichu, Golbat, etc

So, after informing myself i can say that i like what i've seen. No random battles is a GOD-GIVEN improvement, and if the process of actually catching a wild Pokemon is now faster ... they'll get my blessing for the Go-catching.

Graphics are perfectly servicable, i can see Gen 8 having an improved/new engine for bigger technical jumps, so that's fine.

I certainly need and want to know how training now works without wild Pokemon battles, this could really make or break the game ... because i ain't sending Pokemon to Oak for some candy.

There's one thing that i have to nag about, though ... the forced motion-control in handheld mode. Please Gamefreak, Switch has a touchscreen, use it like anyone with a healthy common sense would do. Keep the motion controls in portable mode optional.

You can catch over half the Pokémon in Sun and Moon with one button press, in one turn, via Quick Balls

Heck, this is how I caught my Tapu Koko and he's supposed to be harder to catch lol

Its like people arnt allowed to have opinions. Right.

I went from disappointment to lukewarm but I aint gonna talk badly on others who really seem to enjoy what this may bring (like my gf) or think this is trash. There will always be people that like or dislike the premise of a game.

Man that box art and title really looks like it's for about a 5 year old.

I think they actually may have managed to fuck up a bit here, at least losing a bit of sales. Not sure I'd buy that and I've bought every 3ds pokemon.

I'm going to assume not, seeing as the game will have different stat systems and level up mechanics. Gen 8 next year will most likely be when you can bring over all your old mons to the new system.

I mean, 3DS virtual console games had different stat mechanics and still were able to transfer them, no?

I dislike the visual style they chose coming off of Sun and Moon. The Chibi artstyle just feels wrong to me after seeing the more realistically proportioned models in Sun and Moon (Its kinda like going back to X/Y's visual style). Another visual element that really bothers me is how retangular everything looks. I understand that they're using an older, grid-based region (Kanto), but seeing all these hard squares and rectangles just makes the place feel artificial. One thing I really remember and enjoy about Sun/Moon is its rough looking route design. Alola's routes very rarely had such hard edges; they were usually fairly rough and asymmetric looking, which made Alola really feel like a new, unexplored place.

Basically, going off what we see in the trailer, the Let's Go games look a lot cleaner and sharper than Sun/Moon, but the chibi style combined with the geometric visual design makes me prefer Sun/Moon's visuals, even though they are messier and have a lower resolution. I'll keep checking the previews as the release approaches to see if the visuals evolve/change with other areas, but this is what I'm thinking right now.
Yep, these ones look so bland. I don't like this art style at all.

Just look at it from the other side: if Nintendo and TPCi weren't aware of the shit show these games are, they wouldn't have done the pre-emptive damage control of saying that the actual new Pokémon games come next year.

I think personally Pokemon Let's Go is a really fun game if you sit down and play it. I think, for example, an elementary school kid who plays it without any preconceived notions, I think it would be really fun for them. I think it's also really, really fun for siblings to play it together.

Is there a standard for how much you're allowed to like Pokemon? All these games are just for whoever wants them.
You don't understand, there are prerequisites to being a real Pokémon fan. The plebeian who has only been reintroduced to the series via Go and represents a huge casual audience that could be mobilized to ensure the future success of the series does not matter, and Nintendo is disrespecting the true fans by trying to expand the games' audience.

I'm actually pleasantly surprised by how nice the game looks. It's very stylized and very fitting for the series. It looks good.

The only thing I'm truly concerned about is how challenging this game will be. Without wild pokemon battles, we're left to battle the trainers. How many more trainers will be in the game? How many pokemon will they have? Do they level up in difficulty with us this time? It seems like the couch coop is a perfect opportunity to allow difficulty to ramp up since we can now jump in and help our friends who are struggling with that one route and are impeded from moving forward. Please, let it be so.

The catch mechanic is okay provided there is difficulty in finding rarer pokemon. With Go, at least you have to run across a field or a park before throwing the pokeball. I hate to think that merely walking onto a route during the day/night will reveal all of the pokemon on that route. I figure there will be poke lures and some element of the hunt that will make this interesting. It will be much less interesting if standing on route x for 10 minutes is all that is required to catch the rarest of pokemon presuming it all boils down to just chucking pokeballs.

Oh, and I hope fishing is still somehow a thing in this game.

I'll never forget all those people in the speculation thread telling me that there's just "no way" GF would lock you to the first 151 mons

Tempted to quote and shame em but I'll stand down.

There are A LOT of people from that thread so adamant about so much stuff, that's actually funny if you think in retrospect.

The tile based game design was brought out by Thales, btw, and everyone witch-hunt him.

Because it was never fun to whittle down a wild Pokemon's HP or use status effects for those that run away.
It's not really about whether it's fun or not, at least not for me, not directly anyway. It's about whittling down a Pokémon's health being a fundamental mechanic of catching Pokémon, one that makes them much more likely to catch and that much less based on RNG. Of course, it's still based on luck at the end of the day. But if you get a Pokémon into critical health and then put it to Sleep or something, it's almost a sure-deal you'll catch it (at least with most non-Legendary/Pseudo-Legendary Pokémon anyway).

Without that, it's just pure luck through and through, and there's nothing you can do about that whatsoever other than just using better Pokéballs and just hoping for the best. I don't see how that's an improvement at all, not having any other ways to improve your odds at all and just making everything that much more luck based. I don't get what removing the option actually adds or improves. It literally only subtracts.

Like previously, if you didn't want to lower a Pokémon's health or any of that, and just wanted to toss Pokéballs, that was always an option. Now that's the ONLY option. Limiting options/playstyles like that just feels so, well, bleh. And it makes moves like False Swipe useless (and to a lesser degree, stuff like Super Fang as well, which has similar utility, particularly if you're scared about taking a Pokémon all the way down to 1 health and it killing itself from confusion or weather or something), which are literally only there for catching wild Pokémon. Just don't get how actually taking that stuff away and making it pure luck, through and through, is actually an improvement at all. =/

Cant really blame them for trying to take advantage of the massive casual audience this can bring in. Plus, its a test for TPC where they can hopefully make improvements for the next gen game.

I feel like some people in this thread need to accept that this game simply isn't for them. You'll get your proper core RPG in 2019, don't fret. If you don't like the look of Let's Go then don't buy it.
