Norman Reedus by the sounds of it is being positioned to be the leading guy after he leaves. Not sure how that will work.. but ok.

I would have been okay with this 4 seasons ago or so if Andrew Lincoln really had to leave, but now? Guy's basically used for random mumbling every now and then. He occasionally goes heroic which only ends up worsening the situation for the other protagonists, only to practically become a ghost again for several episodes. His character development stopped sometime before Negan's arrival, and at this point I'm not really interested in him leading.

With Maggie, basically, gone and with Rick leaving.. I'm quite honestly hard pressed to even care enough to bother. We all know Rick is gonna go out in the dumbest way - See: Carl.

I like Daryl...but I cannot see his character leading the show, he was always a support character for me. The only other character I could see taking over would be a (redeemed) Negan. Losing Rick is fairly massive though and I would be surprised if the show gets a 10th Season, this will have a massive impact on ratings.

I'd say Michonne or Maggie could be the new main lead, but Maggie is only in six episodes - and has another show so she's probably gone - and apparently Michonne is near the end of her contract so she could be leaving soon too.

After those three.. I have no idea who could even try and carry this show. How would they even try and redeem Negan? Is that even possible?

The only reason I mentioned him is because they were hinting towards it last season, but with Carl out of the picture now it would be fairly unlikely anyway. I have no idea which direction the writers will take things with Rick, Maggie and possibly Michonne gone. I do not read the comics but it seems like they are diverging anyway with this news.

Finally catching up on Fear the Walking Dead, about halfway through season 3.

This is so much better than the past three years of The Walking Dead.

Yup, still not a very good show IMO, but the quality is above and beyond the last three seasons of TWD without a doubt

I actually disagree. Season 3 is legitimately a good show and I'm enjoying the character interaction with the new characters.

Season 1 was a disappointment because they skipped over the most interesting aspects. I wanted to see the damn outbreak, not have a multi-week time skip. That was a terrible decision.

Season 2 was good but it had ups and downs, mainly in the first half. I thought the second half was very solid. The ending to the season was weak but the brutal nature of the Travis and Chris story near the end was very good. It also reminded me a bit of season 4 of The Walking Dead where everyone was split up in the second half, which I enjoyed quite a bit.

I'm on S3 right now and feel like the momentum built via the end of S2 was completely deflated. But I'll keep watching

The walkers are a non threat and hardly in the fucking show. Human interactions are a major step up from TWD of course though

So Lauren Cohen is also leaving after 6 more eps. They really just need to wrap it up next season, AMC had a good thing and just slaughtered it.

On the topic of Fear, season 3 is fantastic, I haven't watched S4 yet but I've heard it's like a different show and not very good either. Which sucks.

Losing Rick and Maggie could be the shakeup that the show needs. Both of them seem to have had their arcs exhausted. I wonder how they will get rid of Maggie? Killing off a pregnant woman would be pretty grim.

The general consensus is very positive re: S4.

That's really good to hear. Thanks. I really have to get caught up so I can watch as it airs.

I remember reading a few negative posts about it, and articles even, but only titles. But this was probably 2-3 eps into the season. I didn't dig deeper as I didn't want to get spoiled.

There are definitely things to be spoiled too, so keep avoiding those articles! There are only two episodes left this mid season, so you should be able to binge the whole thing before not too long.

Will avoid, thanks!

The thing that's stopped me was I was doing a rewatch of Mad Men, and now finished up a rewatch of Smallville.

So getting caught up in those again I kept forgetting to watch Fear.

But yeah, part ways through the last season of Smallville so I'll be good to go whenever it comes back from break. Hopefully it's not a long one.

To be honest, I'm kind of looking forward to seeing what a Rick- and Maggie-less Walking Dead looks like. I love those characters, but I also think that taking them out of the picture could be the shot of energy the show needs to become interesting again. This could give other characters a chance at the spotlight that we haven't gotten much out of yet or in a long time (looking at you, Daryl).

I will say that they need to trim the fat in regards to the size of the cast. They've tried to juggle a large number of characters ala Game of Thrones for a while now, but I just don't think they can pull it off— they did it well in the back half of season four, but never since. If they could eliminate a large portion of the side characters, then that coupled with the losses of Rick and Maggie (and hell, maybe one or two other main characters) could let them instead focus on a core group of characters. Hopefully, that would allow them to keep a "main" story continuously going forward without much filler, and allow them to do interesting things with the characters since they wouldn't have to jump back and forth between so many of them.

I don't think they'll do it, I admit, but if we got a Red Wedding-style massacre and just let the best characters (or characters with the most potential) stand when the dust clears, I would be so much more interested in the show again. I still like it as it is, but one can dream.

I haven't been particularly high on TWD for a long time now and I still felt a pinch looking at this.

I made peace with the show dragging on seemingly forever because it was a comfortable staple in my life, a constant in my weekly TV viewing and discussion habits. There are a lot of significant moments in my life I can pinpoint alongside particular seasons.

It's hard not to feel something seeing this image, especially when realising how much time has really gone by.

I'd argue we have seen that already - fear the walking dead. I would say that is nowhere near the regular show's peak yet despite not being "held back" by carryover characters.

Norman Reedus won't be able to carry the show, he's not even 1/4th the actor Lincoln is. They'd be better off with Danai becoming the lead but she's on her way out too, right?

lol Norman Reedus leading. His popularity is 95% due to teenage fan-girls swooning over his looks. Guy just stands and mumbles a few words every now and then and occasionally does some badass feat. I can't even imagine him leading this show.

I'm really looking forward to getting caught up on Fear, especially since I don't know how much longer I'll stick with the main show.

I can't stand Rick, his (bad) overacting and alpha, unlikeable character, so I'm glad to see him gone. Though with 90% of other characters I ever gave a crap about gone I seriously doubt I'll keep watching other than having it on for background noise. The writers failed hard on this show.

TWD proper has sucked for quite awhile. This just further confirms that it will never get better. My biggest fear though is that they'll see ratings plummet and decide to combine both shows into one and Fear (which had a stellar season 3) will end up being pulled into that shit sandwich.

That isn't going to happen (they miiiight do something like that, maybe, in Fear's final season?), but it won't be any time soon. Remember, The Walking Dead is far and away the #1 show on basic cable (ratings could fall by another 2/3 and that would still be the case) and Fear the Walking Dead is also in the top 5.

I just fear losing this many critical characters at once could be a huge blow. I hope I'm wrong though, I just want Fear to continue being good and I have little faith in the main series ever being good again.

I like Norman Reedus, but he just doesn't work as the main lead, at least not in the Walking Dead.
Let's see if he can do better in Death Stranding...

The only time Daryl has been an interesting character was in the first season when he was playing off of Merle.

That was also around the only time that any characters really had any recognizable character traits. For the past three or four years the only thing the show can come up with that passes for a character moment is randomly adjusting the sliders on each character's "competency" and "willingness to murder" stats.

Real actors are leaving the show to reap new opportunities, while Norman Reedus desperately hangs on to the only important thing he's ever done in his career. Lol he knows he's done after this one.

He can retire off the money and residuals from this or just coast on minor film appearances.

What I'm wondering is what Lincoln does next. Hasn't appeared in a movie since 2010.

Following Kirkman's aimless comics was the downfall of the show. You can't run an expensive prestige drama like a never-ending soap opera. The show needed a beginning, middle, and an end with no more than 9 seasons.

As an old Daryl fan I sure as fuck don't want him to lead the show. Give that shit to Khary Payton. Would be way more interested.
