It seems like an entire storyline was cut out. While they should have been upfront about this, I kind of feel bad for them.

Kind of what happens when you try way too hard for it to be shocking.
Like, I get you want to make it feel like hell or whatever but it just completely lacks any sort of subtlety and loses all impact.

I feel like this can't be posted enough in all of these Agony threads. Agony may have ended being a dumpster, but there's still hope for Scorn. I feel like they're kinda going for the same crowd.
So wait, I was spot on. I said the cut content would be something like rape and killing a child and it was exactly that. Glad it was cut tbh.
I was reading the description of the "human centipede" movies, out of curiosity, and this game seems to be going for the exact same thing. Schlocky horror that revels in excessive vacuous gore that quickly becomes mind numbing, it has no interest in reaching for something that's remotely unsettling or terrifying.
Not to mention the majority of people boycotting the game due to censorship simply want more gratuitous, disturbing imagery on-screen more than they want a meaningful story or functional gameplay. Doesn't make any sense to me.

Everything I've seen from this game is pretty tame. I'm emotionally unmoved in any direction, I can pretty much only muster a weak "meh". The "bad" art doesn't help this game much either.

There's actually been a lot of really good horror games recently, just most of them have small budgets and no media attention.
I totally forgot that game existed. The Giger-esque FPS? Well, that and Sinking City is on my list to keep an eye out for.
I have to do some researching and hunting. Those are the games I am always most anticipating and willing to give chances to (within reason).
I've been using the internet for 22 years. I have seen A LOT of weird shit. Some erotic, some not so much.
I'm sure fans of this game can find more convincing 3D porn on PornHub that nerds probably whip together in a matter of hours.

It saddens me because most newbie horror creators always leap for quick shock and gore. I'm a massive horror fan but at the same time hates schlocky horror more than most just because it feels exploitative and horror genre is overwhelmingly littered with it. Not to mention the fact that it's incredibly easy to make something violent and shocking. Just put a mutilated baby corpse on screen and you are done. But creating true horror takes imagination and understanding of what our primal fears are, only then you can you can create something that comes close to unsettling a human psyche.
Oh well, maybe the devs will create something different as their next game after learning from their missteps in Agony.

Agree! If anyone out there is looking for a good horror game with actual mature themes, I can't recommend Detention enough.

I haven't played Agony yet, but has it out-fucked up'd Dante's Inferno? Cause from what I'm seeing, Inferno did a better job of Hell. Shit, Maybe Brutal Legend did a better job of Hell...
Finished the game today, despite my better judgement. For those that care, it took ~6 hours, though I'd say at least 30-45 minutes of that time is representative of completely lost progress thanks to the save system in the game being at set locations, and spaced either stupidly close to each other (there's literally a room where two of them are set a few meters apart), or excruciatingly far.
Most of my earlier impressions stand, more or less, but I figured I'd go ahead and give some parting thoughts.
Agony is a bad videogame. It might actually be one of the prettiest, worst games of 2018 thus far. There's no question that Madmind Studios has some level of talent, but Agony lacks so much focus, quality control, and world building that there's really no saving it: no amount of patching will fix the myriad of issues this game has. The story is nonsense, the gameplay is infuriating to the point of making me want to quit and give up (multiple times, mind), and while the game has these rare moments of actually working, most of the time it just leaves you wondering who in the world thought they were building something worth selling?
At the end of the game, you get an ending and a message telling you that this isn't the end, and you can play as a succubus. Ironically, the mode looked more fun that what was on offer on the first go, but there sure as hell won't be a second. I'm extremely disappointed with Agony: when the first trailer hit, I remember thinking how awesome it looked; someone else in the thread said it best: it looked like Amnesia in Hell. If Agony were Amnesia in Hell, it might have a chance. Instead, it's a mediocre, broken, confusing mess of a game, and even if you're a horror fan I would wait until it is about 5 dollars, and even then only to proceed if you literally fucking hate yourself, like I do.

I played it for a bit and then refunded it. The visuals are really great and it's atmospheric...but super rough around the edges and as someone who isn't a fan of stealth, it quickly gets annoying.
This game always looked like nothing but total crap in the screencaps and trailers for it. Childish edgelord bullshit. No artistic merit to it whatsoever, nothing in the way of gameplay that looked compelling even as a walking sim (a genre that I can really enjoy). It boggles the mind that anyone at all was honestly expecting this to be good. I just can't wrap my mind around it.
