I mean, Aeris is literally just a translation error because the Japanese use a 'su' sound for 'th'.

Isn't this the crux of it? Meteor was defeating Holy until the Lifestream intervened, and she was only able to call it forth because she was dead, and part of it. I don't think regular ol Living Aerith has the power to summon the Lifestream at will.
There's a novel (that may or may not be canon anymore) that tells the story from her POV after she's dead but the whole thing really just boils down to her being like, 'Hey guys lend me your strenght to help all of our friends and save the world.' which I feel like could still be done even if she was was alive. The game states that the Cetra knew how to manipulate the planet's energy and that they specifically can 'open' up the lifestream while they were alive so I don't see why she wouldn't be able to do it as well.

Ancient: A race who lived on the planet from long ago, and who possessed the ability to speak with the planet. Also known as the 'cetra'. The Ancients are said to have opened up lifestream veins in the land, working to make the planet fertile. (source ).

I still expect Aerith to die but the narrative that she had to die for the world to be saved isn't true. She died because the devs wanted to show had sudden and tragic death is. Either way, I think the possibilities of her living is interesting to explore. If video games are art, art isn't static. It changes and is constantly reinterpreted so I don't see why the remake can't tell aspects of the story differently.

I trained myself to say Aerith because it's canon and I have to accept that. I don't accept Genesis, Angeal, Deepground, or any of that other nonsense but her name, I'll accept. It's a fine compromise lol

Aerith vs Aeris is still a thing? It's been like 20 years. Aeris was a misspelling, it's Aerith. It's been time to let it go for awhile lol.

I haven't checked in here in a couple days and now I'm confused.

How is the sword NOT floating? You can see the entirety of the blade, it's not stuck in anything.

I wonder what changes will SE do about the story.
Maybe she'll stay longer this time around.
I think we might still play as her once she leaves the party. I never really understood how the fuck she got to the Northern Continent on her own and I could see that being one of the sections of the game that is expanded upon.

The above is true, but I'd not be surprised to see the remake will probably go down the opposite path and double down on her death being a fated event that has to happen for the world to survive and so on and so forth. Certainly the rest of the compilation leans in on that, and while we know this game won't be canon to the compilation that series was built by a more similar crowd to this game, whereas I've a feeling (based on interview snippets etc) that the attitude to death in FF7 was probably more from Sakaguchi than anyone else, even if the idea for a death was from Nomura.

Having never played this game for longer than an hour due to the horrendous OD of random battles here's hoping they include visible enemies on the overworld as opposed to getting mobbed by baddies as you are trying to limp to a save point when it eventually releases in 3014.

you should give the ps4 version a try, you can turn off random encounters. i think it's the same in the steam version too but i don't have it to confirm.

There's no need to hope. Visible enemies have been a thing for 12+ years in the franchise's mainline games. They aren't going to go back with FFVIIR, especially given it's an action RPG. Random battles make absolutely no sense in this day and age (in a big budget FF) or in the genre.

Ah interesting, thank you.

It does amuse me how people think this game is greatest RPG ever when it isn't a patch on Grandia II (Dreamcast version of course) which is a far superior game in every respect.

Isn't Aerith's name supposed to sound like 'earth?'
I'm not sure translating it as 'Aeris' works at all anymore.

I'm cautiously optimistic but I also wouldn't be surprised if they doubled down on the 'she was meant to die the whole time' rhetoric too which would suck. Some people actually believe she intentionally sacrificed herself / knew she was going to die ahead of time despite Tifa straight up telling Cloud that Aerith talked about the future more than any of them and more than likely intended to rejoin them in the original game. Kitase did say this though:

In the real world things are very different. You just need to look around you. Nobody wants to die that way. People die of disease and accident. Death comes suddenly and there is no notion of good or bad. It leaves, not a dramatic feeling but great emptiness. When you lose someone you loved very much you feel this big empty space and think, 'If I had known this was coming I would have done things differently. These are the feelings I wanted to arouse in the players with Aerith's death relatively early in the game. Feelings of reality and not Hollywood.

There is some hope I guess?

Not so much defeating Holy as Holy was too late. Holy didn't arrive until Meteor was practically touching the ground, and so the force of the two colliding was causing a ton of damage to the planet anyway. It was so low, that Holy was blasting through the taller buildings in Midgar to reach Meteor. If the Lifestream hadn't come they likely would have exploded above Midgar, killing everybody in the city. Mind you, this is still better than if Holy hadn't come and Meteor just took a big chunk out of the planet like the Northern Crater.

I'm all for Aerith living lol. It's never gonna happen though.
So one better. Have the same famous scene in all cinematic cgi glory with Aerith being stabbed and falling to the water. However, turns out Sephiroth missed or didn't actually hit her. Make players think she isn't going to die, but then towards the end of the game have her die in the middle of the sephiroth final boss fight in a cutscene that's even more unexpected and epic looking then the first. So that way the game ends with Aerith being buried/having a funeral in a bitter sweet ending. And in turn we get to pay as Aerith until the very end.

Square's conference is before Sony's one. It's weird that they would prefer to show VII remake in their conference instead of a big live one.

Re: the Aerith discussion, my biggest hope is that they'll stay true to her OG character and have her be a scrappy streetwise girl from the slums. Crisis Core (and fanfiction) have made people forget that she's the most forward/ cheeky of the bunch in terms of the shit she says - she's miles away from being a Mary Sue but in CC she's "afraid of the sky" (groan). OG Aerith takes no prisoners and is a savvy flower saleswoman :P

EDIT: She should absolutely still die and those saying otherwise do not understand the significance of her death to the feel of the game.

Yeah, that's what I've been wondering about too if they really are planning on showing FFVIIR again. It would ruin the surprise of having it at Sony's show. Who knows though, maybe it'll be shown first at the MS show which is before SE's, lol.

I'm honesty blown away to see that more than a few people actually WANT Aerith to not die during her iconic scene or not die at all. That one change could potentially ruin the entire experience for me. I don't think I'd be able to get over it.

We need an animated gif from Hot Fuzz of "You're a doctor. Deal with it!" where instead, it says, "It's been over 20 years... Deal with it!"... "Yeah muthafucka!".

The whole old fans still whining over "Aeris" and hating "Aerith" should be in that "yelling at old man yelling at clouds" thread.

I'm not sure if I agree. I think she had to die in order to summon the life stream from within the life stream.

Yup, this is the same woman who threatened to tear a dude's balls off after all. She was also the one party member who most looked forward to the future and had the brightest outlook. She never wanted to be some sacrificial lamb, she wanted to live.

The fanbase did a number on Cloud too post AC and CC. I'm trusting Square to remember that he's a big dweeb play acting at being cool (and that they pleeeease keep his snarky side intact). Most of his portrayals post VII have been serious loner quiet guy, and while he acted like that at times in VII, he's actually very caring and emphatic towards others, it's more that he feels others shouldn't care about him due to his self esteem issues that he puts up the front. I can't say I'm confident they'll get that nuance right for the Remake but I'm hopeful.

I'm hopeful based on what Nomura has said in interviews, and the attention to detail in things like him looking sickly (granted his character has apparently now been redesigned a bit). The appeal of Cloud overall as a character is in the "reveal" following the lifestream sequence with Tifa, where we discover he was actually just a lonely boy with an intense inferiority complex and there's nothing special about him. It's what makes him (IMO) the most unique FF main. That moment is actually what I'm most worried about them covering in whatever part they get to it in, the "you were there" moment - it's the true revelation/ shocker of VII that a lot of people don't really "get" or miss. So much focus is placed on Aerith's death when it's this moment that actually defines FFVII and Cloud's personal journey, the revelation that actually he's just a normal guy and his flawed personality and unremarkable nature led him to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. If they manage to get all of that right it'll be a happy miracle.

Advent Children was a disservice to that journey as well. He went from "cool one-liner guy" (emulating Zack) to his dweeb self when he regains his true memories, and being honest with himself and the rest of the team (positive even) to moping. It makes sense for his character to have the level of guilt displayed in AC, but it's played far too "cool" to pay any kind of service to the development journey he went on in the OG. Long live the Cloud that says let's mosey.
