I'm about to do that now on my NG+ run. Not looking forward to it at all. Though apparently having him destroy the crystal allows you time to hack off the tip of his tail due to the stun duration. Never tried it though.
And I just got it! Thanks for the tip, worked like a charm. 2 Crystal Soul spears did the trick.

Fml, I beat Gwyn without realizing I had the Artorias DLC since it comes with remaster. Now I have to do 3/4 of the game again.

Hah i knew i missed something as o haven't explore Darkroot Garden/Basin yet just a tiny bit up to Moonlight Butterfly and since it's my 1st time with DS1 something like that can happen since i'm playing without any form of guides except asking questions here :D

As for my Avatar i belive it comes from DS3?

Well i'm happy you found it amusing :)

This is brilliant lol. If you're serious, we're not poking fun at you, we're just stoked because there's some cool shit coming up that you don't seem to be aware of. Let us know when you put it all together :P

Edit: actually you should do the DLC first, and then get the item from the Forest that you need to access the Abyss :P that's the route I'm planning on, apparently it has a nice Easter Egg if you do it in that order

So I just got to Anor Londo. Up until now the whole game took place on what appeared to be the lower outskirts of some huge structure and now I know what is up there. I'm not liking the game as much as I had hoped, but at times like this I can see why everyone loves it.

I hated blightown and Sens fortress but hopefully this area is more enjoyable.

Anyone on PC not seeing a lot of (or any, in fact) messages?
I see plenty of "ghosts", bloodpools and summon signs, but no messages anywhere.

Messages have been bugged since the last PC patch, they still haven't said when (or if) they're going to fix it. I see the PC player base has dropped significantly, maybe people are getting fed up of the lack of communication. Double dipped on PS4 so may well just keep playing on there. A lonely feeling without those messages.

Fuck me...I just found out that covenant offers are halved every time you leave the covenant. What in the fuck. I gave Gwyndolin 9 offerings and left for sunbros for a second. Now I guess I'm either at rank one or at half of 9. Does anyone know how to check your offerings if you're able to? Fuck me..
I think they should've changed this since they added the covenant switching option at bonfires it was a bit mean to keep the penalty. Best idea is to not give any items to covenants until you have the full amount needed for whatever it is you're offering for. (to late now I know!)

On the side note: How many humanities it takes to rank up in chaos covenant? And what would be the best place to farm them? My lady went to bed kids are sleeping already so i have couple spare hours to waste ^_^

Of course it does and anyone that says otherwise is lying. Just make sure you do the dlc before beating the game, pretty fun fights in there.

Need 30 to get everything out of the covenant and any more is just a covenant rank up. Farming rats in the Depths is what I do for humanity.

The way From incorporates DLC into their games is a mess. On one hand it's cool that it's more organic than selecting it from the main menu, but accessing it is way too obtuse and easily missable.

I can appreciate some stuff being obscure. I would have never found Ash Lake or Quelaag's sister on my own, and the fact that's stuff like that hidden so well is one of the things I love about the series. Content you're paying extra for shouldn't be that cleverly hidden though. It would have been nice if they added some sort of message to Remastered when you gain access to Gwyn to remind you you've missed an entire chunk of the game.

Ah, thanks. Good to know I'm not the only one.

For a game like this the playerbase dropping is pretty normal. Most people will just beat and delete.

It would be nice if they patched it sooner rather than later though. They have an active dev build on steamdb, hopefully the patch is nearly ready.

I realize this will be extremely YMMV, but general if I summon help for Seath will people know to help cut his tail before killing him? I really want the MLGS for my sorcerer character and I think it's going to be a huge pain in the ass to do it alone with my Butterfly Horn. I'm worried about screwing it up too though, I'm pretty sure you only get the one shot, you can't get the sword by being summoned and cutting his tail in someone else's game.

I helped 3-4 people get the tail, so when I finally decided to take on Seath I just summoned because I wanted it to. Didn't get it on my game.

Beat Artorias this morning. He was wrecking me until I realized I could stunlock him as he tries to buff himself. Made things significantly easier, now I kind of wish I hadn't done it. Probably my favourite boss after Biggie and Smalls.

Not a fan of how spooky the DLC is now though, From do spooky sound/ambience too well.

CONGRATS DUDE! That's some clutch shit right there!
Thanks. :) With that, I think I'm done with the remaster for now. Been meaning to get to several other games in recent months (this will end my SotFS > DkS3 > DkS:R marathon), so now's a good time before I start to feel burnout. What a journey, and my fingers are still crossed that DeS:R and/or BB2 will be unveiled next week at E3. :)

Wait, Is this your first time playing Dark Souls 1? Your avatar says otherwise...

Oh no, definitely not.

It's my first playthrough of the remaster, though. I kept myself on blackout-mode before the launch, so I wasn't quite sure what I was going to get into. So far, though, it's perfect. It runs so smoothly compared to DSFix.

Is it too much of a dick move to just turn the console off if you see he's about to go down and you haven't gotten the tail? Is there any other way of aborting a failed attempt before you've missed your opportunity?

Back in the X360 days I used to carry the shame of being unable to defeat O&S by myself in NG+. After dying dozens of times I finally gave up and shelved the game.

Yesterday, however, something magical happened.

I summonned Solaire, rushed to the fog wall. O&S came attacking and I kept blocking and rolling, but Solaire never walked through the fog wall. "Ok, I'm gonna die," I thought, but decided to fight so at least I could practice and better memorize their movesets. Since on my first run I killed Ornstein first, this time I tried killing Smough. Ornstein kept trying to flank me, but eventually his companion fell. I thought giant Ornstein would be a pain in the ass since I've always heard his fight was harder than giant Smough, but I breezed through it and killed Ornstein while getting hit only once. Maybe it's the 60fps,I don't know, what matters is that I got my pride back after many years.

Hells. To the fuckin. Yeah.

I don't think I ever beat S&O solo originally (or ever) either. But I did do my best to solo as much shit as I could (it didn't hurt that I was a year or two LTTP). So I feel your pride.

This time however, I will have no shame. I have beaten Gwyn and proven myself, now I'm summoning (and helping) as much as possible, and it's a ton of fun. I triple teamed the Gargoyles, come at me bro.

There are so many ways to play this game, it really is great.

to be fair I still try everything solo, usually multiple times, but I also don't hesitate to hit that summon sign if I feel like it

Going from a dex build to strength is polarizing. I hate how slow my zweihander is, but I love the damage and 2-hand stun/knock down. I'm also starting to appreciate the benefit of wearing no armor at all.

Wonder if that changes as you NG+

Gotta say, I still enjoy the game so far, but the brilliance of the first half is fading.

I just went through part of New Londo and the difficulty feels unfair. I died a few times in areas like Blighttown but I always had the feeling I was in charge of my fate. Now I die constantly to enemies hiding in dark corners, waiting for you to be distracted by another enemy so they can two-shot you in the back.

And thus I can again start at Firelink, again wait for the elevator, again cross the bridges, again activate the trancient curse, again battle the ghost while they clip through wall, again maintain my balance on small pathways while ghosts attack me, again make it to a new area, only to die again by some enemy I could not have seen. Rinse and repeat.

It's the same with the Duke's Archive and those damn hollows that fly into you from every fucking bookshelf.

That's really cool. Is there an interactive map somewhere? I want to see the Depths and Blighttown as well. And the Anor Londo archers of course.

I didn't summon any human players in DS1 yet (NPCs are somewhat dumb, so I'd rather rely on them instead of capable players, go figure), but I did summon someone to help me with Ariandel in DS3 and it was amazing. Dark Souls games have a really helpful playerbase, and it feels awesome to help other people out as well. I helped lots of people kill Sif last week, before my Plus subscription expired.

Players I summoned for O&S were great, they would start laying into the nearest one first, until they saw the one I was going at, stopped attacking and came to help me. Happened on both occasions, they just knew which soul I wanted.

Congrats! I've never understood why Ornstein is considered the harder second form. Smough's move where he pushes his hammer in front of you and rushes you is the hardest to dodge of any of their combined movesets, and it does a ton of damage. Ornstein doesn't have anything comparable for me, the hammer rush often hits me even if I see it coming if I don't dodge at precisely the right time or in the correct direction. Smough's butt stomp can be rough too, it's easy to get a little greedy hitting him after an attack and not be able to get far enough way to avoid taking a ton of damage. All of Ornstein's moves are really easy to dodge.

Players I summoned for O&S were great, they would start laying into the nearest one first, until they saw the one I was going at, stopped attacking and came to help me. Happened on both occasions, they just knew which soul I wanted.

That's what I did when I was helping people with them. I usually default to taking out Smough first since Ornstein's armor and spear are easier to use and Smough doesn't have a replacement reward for the Hornet Ring, but if it seems like they're trying aggressively to take Smough out instead of just tanking or kiting him away I'll switch focus and help take him down.

I had a BSS +15 also and yeah, it made the game trivial. Currently handicapping myself with other random weapons without going above +10. It's been a lot more fun. Bloodborne kicked my ass without needing to handicap though, I'm guessing this game is just a bit easier if you've been through later games.

Not being able to block alone makes Bloodborne a lot harder, there's no easy way to learn enemies' patterns with little fear of being damaged. And Bloodborne doesn't have the opportunity to luck out and get something like the Black Knight weapons, or to pick up a weapon like the Claymore earlier than you're really meant to.

I'm not sure which style I prefer, Bloodborne definitely feels much more balanced, but being able to completely break Dark Souls once you know the map and can rush through and grab a ton of goodies before properly starting the game is really fun and feels like a great reward for mastering the game. It also serves as a sort of dynamic difficulty. If you get stuck in Bloodborne you're basically screwed. Maybe you can grind levels to get enough health and boost your damage enough to brute force your way through a tough boss or difficult section, but that's not very fun. In Dark Souls you might ask for help online and find out there's kickass weapon hidden in an early area that will make things drastically easier for you.

If you've already played Bloodborne and are used to not blocking I highly recommend playing Dark Souls with a two-handed weapon if you haven't already, it's really fun and gives most fights a whole new dynamic as you figure out how to dodge or strafe attacks instead of just block them. That style of playing always seemed really intimidating to me the first time I played, but going back after playing Bloodborne made it feel a lot more manageable.

Trust me, you'll appreciate it a lot more in retrospect.

It's literally one of the reason why the level design in DS1 is so well connected and brilliantly designed, cause the designers were literally forced to came up with multiple shortcuts and hidden passages since players can't just wrap out of an area after they're done with exploring.

It also makes ''deep'' areas like Depth and Blighttown a lot more immersive and intense cause you can't just press X on the bonfire to escape, everything is super physical in DS1, if you want to get out of somewhere you have to walk out of it alive.
This is something that's been really made clear to me on this playthrough. I liked the warping when it showed up in Dark Souls 2, but after having experienced both, opening up warping later in the game is way better. You can actually plan out different routes to the same point depending on what you want to accomplish, and it makes the world feel more connected and alive.

Umm I feel like my +4 Reinforced Club just got less powerful after I leveled up (leveled up Str Dex and End to 20). Enemies I had been one-shotting (I think) now take two. Am I just mis-remembering who I one-shotted? Or could leveling up actually adversely affect a weapon's damage output?

Well, enemies have armor or a different type of resistances later on

I like locking warp as well but then let me go to any bonfire of my choosing.
