I asked in the Twitch thread, but do we have a Doctor Who Discord?
If not, I could ask Sentry to create a channel for this on the main Era Discord. That could be fun.

Terror of the Zygons
A sort of Invasion of the Body Snatchers riff, that starts out kinda cool but ends up losing the plot and this creepy atmosphere it had built up in the early episodes by pivoting to this dumb-looking Loch Ness monster puppet going on a rampage in the later episodes. I really like the organic look and quasi-psychedelic colors of the Zygons' ship. And is it me, or do the Zygon costumes look much better here than they do in the modern episodes? It seems like the faces are more expressive, and the costumes themselves look much less rubbery overall.

This was apparently the last appearance of Harry for the series, though you wouldn't really guess it given how little of a fuck the Doctor gives. Not even a parting word! I think I'll miss Harry... I thought he was kind of a dick in The Ark in Space, but he acquitted himself pretty well in Genesis of the Daleks and to a lesser extent this episode (though he spends a lot of it locked up or being impersonated). It'll be interesting to see the Fourth Doctor and Sarah Jane alone for once now, given how famous that pairing is in the show's reputation.

edit: okay, here it is> https://discord.gg/zrthGjp
If there was another one already I'll delete it. But I didn't find anything.

Nice!
It's gonna be a fun ride. I can't wait to see some Troughton, even though there aren't many episodes with him.

Speaking of marathons, I was hoping someone could give me a sense check on mine. I'm planning to wrap up my abridged Tom Baker run through by the end of the summer (exactly 40 years since Baker's run first premiered in the US!) and while I was blitzing through these things at the beginning of the year, my pace has slowed way down lately and I'm doubtful I'm going to see everything I had originally shortlisted in just the next few months. I'm currently watching Terror of the Zygons, but from this list of what I had on tap for next, which of these serials would you guys consider less essential/good and/or skippable? I might circle back to these someday, but for now I'm looking to trim maybe 5-6 from this list:

skippable:
Planet of Evil - just a really cheap retelling of Forbidden Planet with some appalling design (the Morestran ship and constumes) and guest star acting (prentiss Hancock)
The Masque of Mandragora (has some nice bits, including a rare walk through the TARDIS) the killer sparkler never looked that good but a good period story.
The Hand of Fear - It's interesting in places but has a weak ep 4.
Image of the Fendahl: a story that might have worked the previous season has a few laughable bits here.
The Androids of Tara. Really, really skippable unless you're watching everything. That said, the very last shot is comedy gold.

all are watchable and entertaining but none are close to being classics or essential

^thanks! It's funny how everyone who responded to my list have mostly coalesced around the same choices.

I thought there weren't going to be any Daleks? Just put twitch on and there are some absolutely rubbish Daleks trying to destroy the TARDIS.

Following A Very English Scandal, RTD's going back to genre TV for the first time since he left Doctor Who.

The name of the politician mentioned in the above, Vivienne Rook, rang a bell. Yes, the similarly named Vivien Rook, played by Nichola McAuliffe, is a Sunday Mirror reporter who is murdered by Harold Saxon in The Sound of Drums when she reveals that she sees beyond his plausible cover story.

Authors do reuse names sometimes, so there probably isn't a serious connection there.

Heads up for those who like their Big Finish in physical format: the Class boxsets are limited to 500 copies each. Also, Big Finish announced today they're orienting more around digital and will start letting new CD releases go out of print after they've been out for 12 months instead of keeping them in print indefinitely as they've been doing previously.

I'll have to listen to some Big Finish after the marathon is over. I'll need my fix.

Pyramids of Mars
This was a good one. Sutekh is a cool villain, who, like Davros, is elevated by a really great performance. There's also this cool effect at the end of part one, where Sutekh's servant appears and everything he touches - whether it's his feet on the ground or his hands on that guy's shoulders - start smoking when he comes into contact. I think this might be Baker's best performance yet. He really sells how utterly scared the Doctor is about Sutekh, and how out of his depth he is in trying to prevent his return. The way he snaps at Scarman's brother for ruining his plan, for instance, perfectly gets across the Doctor's desperation compared to how relatively in control he appears to be in other similarly dangerous situations. The gauntlet of challenges and riddles that keep Sutekh barricaded in the pyramid make for a funky looking setpiece too. If I have one maor issue with this serial, it's that it was hard to keep straight/care about all of the other supporting players running around. But overall, an excellent story, and one of Baker's best.

I am wondering - do you think UNIT and Kate Stewart should return for Series 11. I hope they do because i would like to see the 13th Doctor interact with Kate

I favor breaking away from previous showrunners' characters whenever the show changes hands. Especially for the first series.

They can reference them, but I don't want to see 12's UNIT, no Paternoster gang, no Torchwood/Jack Harkness. BRING IN THE NEW!

Well it is has been heavily hinted that Jack is returning

Why would they release a trailer this month when Comic Con is just around the corner?

edit: This reminded me to check on those set reports accounts, and it's really strange how little people have managed to snag of their filming this year.
Are they just spending a lot of time in studio, or did they step up security?

I'd be happy for Kate to come back but with a new team with no continuity baggage. All the new series Doctors have encountered UNIT, and I think Kate worked better for the Eleventh and Twelfth Doctors than generic one-off characters worked for the Ninth and Tenth Doctors. Plus she's familiar from the 50th anniversary so it's not like she's unfamiliar with casual, mainstream viewers.

Bear in mind that Chibnall was the person who brought Kate into the show in the first place. I wouldn't be surprised if she figured in along the way.

Kate without Osgood seems ideal. Osgood seems like a particularly Moffat-y creation.

Have Kate keep recurring for another 15 years like the Brig, for all I care.

Osgood seems like the sort of character you potentially bring back for the anniversary but leave aside otherwise. Like, she's a fun connection to that era who can be out there and age - and obviously she could potentially be key to any future Zygon outing - but otherwise, yeah, keep her out.

The World Cup trailer thing makes a lot of sense, which is precisely why it might be a guess from some over-excited fans, ha.

It's not a huge point, but I really felt it when Moffat dangled a companion role for Osgood in front of us, then had Missy kill her in a comically nasty way. The Zygon story bringing her back (both of her, multiples of her, an Osgoodtuple) was a wonderful expansion of the character.

I wanna note, btw, that chances are if they do a trailer it'll be a specially-filmed thing like these:

Moffat's era stopped doing these after Matt's first year, for some reason, but this seems like the sort of thing Chibnall would bring back.

That series 1 trailer, with its bizarre editing, is one of the best ones they've ever done. It was also a pretty good, fast glimpse at what that Doctor was about. It'd be pretty good to get something like that for 13.

My classic Who marathon over the past year or so has ocasionally sent me down a rabbit hole of missing episodes. And, as disappointing as it is that so many - including a few crucial ones - are likely gone forever, isn't it kinda incredible that audio exists of every episode? What incredible luck that for every single episode, at least one viewer, somewhere, throughout the early years of the show thought to point a mic at their tv when a new Doctor Who was playing, hit record, and then somehow hold onto that tape for decades.
