It's a continuation of the story, but they're dropping the number probably due to a new direction in game design.
My guess like many others is something that shakes up the norm. Mayne nonlinear missions, or something closer to open world, or maybe even something a little like the Destiny model.
All of which I am fine with as long as it's able to be played and reasonably beaten offline and solo, with splitscreen co-op available. As long as that is still possible they can add whatever online interactivity they want.
But if it's totally like Destiny as in lots of it doesnt work offline, playing solo is discouraged and some things cant even be done solo, then that would be a dealbreaker. Eventually those servers will close and the game will become unplayable for the rest of time. That's not what I want for Halo. Halo to this day is a series I love going back to and playing campaign alone on a lazy saturday or couch co-op with my friends. It never stops being good, and I wont accept a Halo campaign with an expiration date.

But I don't think that gameplay shake ups are the only reason why they're dropping the number. Stinkles has mentioned this as being a jumping on point, so attaching a number would make the game more intimidating to new people who might think they need to play the previous 5 to understand what's going on. And that potentially ties into story reasons. The ending of 5 makes you think that the next game will directly follow it, but that doesn't seem to be the case here. This taking place 2 years later makes me think they're sort of going in a new direction there as well. Time jumping to put some distance in between this and 4&5. Still following through on some of those threads but generally starting fresh in a way that does not absolutely require knowledge of that specific plot line.

A possibility I am excited about but it's exactly what I recommended they do with the series after 5's ending was sort of a dud with fans. I wanted them to quickly move on from what they had going on in 5, not drop it, but sort of side step it early on in the game and go in a different direction. Course correction. And I think that may be what's going on here.

I can't get over how hyped this trailer made me feel.

This bit right here makes me feel like I'm 12 again and I crashed landed on a mysterious ring world for the first time. That is this but the 2018 version:

I REALLY hope that that wasn't just a kind of tech demo and it's representative of how big and open their levels will be.

Yeah, it's great and the towers too. We're back.

Seems so early, which begs the question, what has 343 been doing for 3 years? Did Halo 6 get canned mid-development?
New engines take years to make. After Halo 5, I'm sure plans changed. My guess is they started developing the new engine around 2015-16 and will get it to a "release" state this year, while the rest of the team has been working on other parts of the game. It all sounds like the game is releasing around Holidays 2019 at best. I personally think it'll be a 2020 cross-gen title.

There have been rumors for a while now that 343 scrapped their plans to make Halo 6 the "conclusion" to this trilogy they've been working on because of the lukewarm reception to Halo 5's story. They stopped referring to this as a trilogy and instead keep calling it a "saga" now. On top of building a new engine, it sounds like they've been working on a completely new game from scratch. And if the game is indeed open-world, then that'll make it the largest Halo game ever designed.

This is Halo 6, and it has an entirely new, internally developed engine. They probably spent a looooong time in the concept/planning stages trying to figure out what they were gonna do to reinvigorate the series, and from there working on a brand new engine meant a lengthy development cycle.

Looks great tech and art direction wise but ultimately left wanting for a Halo game, actual gameplay details and story continuation 3 years later. No release date as well, so bunker down with MCC instead. Ugh.

Can't help feeling left wanting. There really is very little to go on.

It will take place after the events of Halo 5 but feel new to new players. Remember how Halo CE woke you up in the middle of a war your had apparently been fighting?

I feel like I'm going insane trying to make sense of what Halo Infinite actually is.

Sounds like Halo Infinite will take place a good bit into the conflict that Halo 6 started, so much so that it won't feel too much like it's a continuation of 5 but almost like a new beginning. Kinda like if you had watched Episode 3 and then watched A New Hope...maybe?

There was some talk (by the actor of Locke) that suggested the game after Halo 5 was supposed to be a spinoff focused on Locke. With the reception of Halo 5 those plans died and they had to go back to the drawing board. This seems to be much more in line with what made Halo great, big, open spaces instead of the more corridor type of games that Halo 4 and 5 have been. Going from those to an open world means you need a new engine, so you can add at least a year to the standard three year cycle. It also means a BR mode is much more likely now.

That's totally the vibe I'm getting from Stinkles comments as well. I wonder if that's one of their touch stones for this project.

I also hope this isn't too open world. I hate open world games. I like linear structures with open-ended sandboxes at key points. Give focus to my journey, but allow me freedom in how to get from Point A to Point B and let the gameplay systems be dynamic enough that my experience at Points A and B feel different enough from everyone else's experience at Points A and B.

Halo 5 is almost 3 years old. I was hoping we'd get little more than a brief teaser of their next title.

The majority of the time after Halo 5 was probably spent building a new engine. That takes enormous resources and on top of that, build the game to go with it. It wouldn't surprise me if this turns out to be a launch Halo for the Next Xbox. I can't see them devoting all of this time and resources to release a major Halo title on the Xbox One family of consoles given where it's at and where we are in this generation.

I wonder if this new engine ties in with tht tease MS made at the end about advancements in AI? Having a more open world physics driven design with more advanced AI is definitely an exciting avenue for Halo to forge down in the future. My only qualm about this announcement was the lack of any sort of timeline whatsoever for release. That makes me think this will be 2020 or later. Perhaps even a next Xbox launch title. Still its good to see Halo finding a new identity of sorts. Its been sorely needed for a long while IMO

If 343 out-Bungie'd Bungie that would be amazing

(in that this could actually deliver on Destiny's original promise)

The aesthetic of it all really drew me in. Clean, artificial, easy to read, colorful. Going back to the Halo ring themselves is a dream come true. Bring to PC, sign me up!

I really hope it's slim and back to basics like I'm getting the sense of.

Yes exactly, the artsyle is so clean, enemies will be easy to discern from the environment just like the classic halo games is what I'm hoping. Can't wait to hear more. I think my plan is to go with the regular Xbox one S for now then buy the next Xbox for halo infinite in 2020, instead of getting the one x right now.
