Loved the gameplay, hopefully they don't drop the flow of the original Ori with the new combat system .
It was mostly a walking simulator. One of the best looking things about this is how they are revamping movement AND actually adding some combat.

I want boss fights, since I found all the escape sequences were really annoying on the first (didn't stop me from finishing the game 3 times - 2 on the older version, one on the Definitive Edition HARD mode). It made me want to fight a boss instead. Seeing this revamped combat gives me hope.

swords, bows and arrows, dive bombs, HAMMERS AN SHIT!! . other facets of the game were already topnotch, but i felt disconnected with the combat in the first game and that looks to be fixed big time now. looks stunning 10/10 incoming.

This is going to be one of my favourite games ever, without a doubt. It's one of those games that would make me consider buying an Xbox (X). I hope my "new-ish" pc will still be able to run it (doesn't need to be in 4k) when it eventually releases (and my pc is considered old...).

Yeah, the combat was pretty much the one week spot and I still enjoyed it, especially later, due to the amazingly fluid mobility (that you can use in combat encounters).

This game is gonna be incredible.

...any word on the hardwate requirements? I have an I5 NUC (NUC7i5BNH) which plays the first Ori just fine, even in 1080p. Will the new one have similar requirments? I hope I will be able to play it...

How big is the studio developing this? Game seems extremely high quality overall.

First one as well.

Hey guys,

Sorry for not checking in earlier - E3 is pretty crazy for us, yesterday we had 12 hours back to back press events, interviews and the likes and at the end of every day I'm just falling dead into my bed...

I'm super glad you guys enjoyed the trailer we showed - this time we knew everyone would just wanna see gameplay and some new stuff and we obviously only showed a fraction of what'll be in the final game, but overall the response seems to be super good. After all the crazy hard work over the past couple of months this is an insane relief :)

If you folks have any questions, I'd be happy to answer them here. I read almost every comment about Ori on GAF back then, so I kinda knew what people wanted in a sequel, but it's always good to get more feedback!

Hi Thomas, I saw the trailer and a couple of gameplay footage videos. Really loving everything I saw. Felt like when I watched OATBF the first time years ago on E3 2014.

I have some questions, i don't know if you can answer all of them, but worth a shot:

*Is "Bash" ability returning?
*How bigger is the new world compared with the first game: twice, thrice, can't answer?
*Has the save system changed? (E.g. you can't create Soul Links anymore)
*Love the new combat system. No Sein shooting anymore?
*Is the game going to be released in Physical for both Xbox One and Windows versions?
*Will the game release on Steam like the first one or for now remains as a Windows 10 Exclusive?
*Any new merchandising plans?
*Escape sections (Ginso Tree) are making a return?
*How's the development going?

Sorry for making too much questions. Really really loved the game. I'm purchasing it Day 1 with no doubt.

Let's get to it!

I have some questions, i don't know if you can answer all of them, but worth a shot:

*Is "Bash" ability returning?

Yeah, of course :)

*How bigger is the new world compared with the first game: twice, thrice, can't answer?

Quite a lot :D

*Has the save system changed? (E.g. you can't create Soul Links anymore)

So here's the thing: We all liked the Soul Link System we had in Blind Forest, apart from one thing: When players forgot to create a save, sometimes they had to re-play 10-15 minutes of stuff they already did... So we're still kinda looking into that one. Another thing that makes the return of Soul Link a bit more difficult is that this time we're allowing you to customize your buttons and it's tough to give up a button for this system...

*Love the new combat system. No Sein shooting anymore?

There's things that are similar to that, but Sein is with the Spirit Tree.

*Is the game going to be released in Physical for both Xbox One and Windows versions?

Not sure if I can say at this point - We love for people to have physical versions of Ori, so we'll see :)

*Will the game release on Steam like the first one or for now remains as a Windows 10 Exclusive?

Nothing's set in stone yet - We honestly don't really know at this point since we're just heads-down on making something great, but we'll do our best to make all the communities happy.

*Any new merchandising plans?

We just (finally) released the Naru and Ori plushies a couple of months ago - I'd LOVE for more plushies and action figures and so on to happen, highly depends on Microsoft, but they also love the Ori IP, so I'll definitely try to see what we can do :)

*Escape sections (Ginso Tree) are making a return?

Well, like with everything we had in Blind Forest, we're trying to up the ante even more - Wait and see what we have in store this time :D

*How's the development going?

So far so good! It was helpful that we started developing WotW with a good, strong base and we have some crazy talent in the team now - We've got Chris, who worked on Rayman, we've got Milton who single-handedly made AM2R, we hired animators from Pixar, Blue Sky Studios, Riot, etc. - It's pretty crazy to see where we are now compared to when we shipped Blind Forest.

Sorry for making too much questions. Really really loved the game. I'm purchasing it Day 1 with no doubt.

Haha, no worries, I'm happy to answer whatever questions might come up here :) And thanks for being an Ori fan, we're really trying to create something special, something that'll stand the test of time. I'm also super interested in hearing feedback on what we've shown this E3!

I am super stoked for this game.

One question, will you be expanding on the soundtrack and have more variety in this game?

Yes! We have more characters in the game, so there'll be more themes and Gareth is hard at work, but I figure he should just answer this question. Pretty sure he has a ResetEra account, I'll send him a link to this thread! :)

Sounds awesome. Especially curious how the save/checkpoint system will eventually work out in Will of the Wisps.

Are you able to speak more to the mindset behind the combat changes? Is it trying to add more depth to those encounters? If so, how does that work while maintaining the traversal focus from the first game that Bash brought to the table? Doing the 0 upgrade run for Ori had me seeing combat completely through that Bash lense and made me much more appreciative of the constant momentum it gave those fights.

A somewhat related question (likely for Gareth): To my recollection, in Ori, a smaller ensemble was generally used with a larger orchestra saved for the cinematics. Does the increased scope of the game (and I presume budget) mean that we'll get more use of orchestra?

I'm replaying Ori right now (never got to experience the added content) and the game is just as beautiful as I remembered.

The save anywhere was one of the best features in Ori 1 (save anywhere is one of the best features in general) so it would be disappointing if it did not return.

For controls, I hope the team uses shortcut combinations like shoulder buttons + face buttons for getting more functions out of the same buttons, if they are running short on buttons.

To solve the people not saving problem, just have a secondary auto save that saves every 10 mins and at checkpoints. The manual save would be a different save file independent from automatically save. That way people can use whichever save they need.

I loved Ori in Rivals of Aether but since its tied to Microsoft im guessing he will never be in smash bros despite being a perfect fit for that kind of game.

This all sounds great.

Out of curiosity how will the Owl work in this game? Is it more of a narrative companion and/or something used to enable some brief flight, or are there deeper gameplay mechanics involved with the creature/character?

Im saying how cool that would be now that he has a lot more attack variety, but I guess you really wanted to post a gif.

Because this isn't the topic for it. How about you post that in a Smash topic? And it gets annoying reading (xxx is perfect for Smash or Switch) in every topic even when the game is a 1st party game.

I would definitely be willing to pay a premium for a retail release here. Ori 1 is my favourite Xbox One exclusive and I gladly imported the DE from the US (after I already had the original game as a dl). Such great games need to be preserved in physical form beyond the lifetime of Xbox Live.

I think we could have a genre defining classic incoming. Congrats to Thomas and the team, everything about Ori and the Will of the Wisps sounds incredible and as someone who grew up on this show as a kid it's giving me all the feels :)

-Microsoft was open to having their IP represented (banjo in this example)
-Ori has been in a game directly inspired by SSB demonstrating how well platforming translates

You don't have to agree but the new aerial attacks reminded me a lot of those kinds of games and its a kind of crossover that's already happened.
Either way I posted what came to mind while you posted a single animated gif so im not sure how what I did was worse.

I really just wanna say that you've done incredible work with the first game and I really appreciate this kind of direct communication with the community. I have no doubts the second game will be another masterpiece and I'll be there day one. You and your team are doing great work!

The only time I was really frustrated with Ori was when I got stuck on a save due to a bug - but then I realized that I could just use an older save. Sooo… I dunno, I think the suggestion below isn't too bad?

BTW, I'm actually listening to the soundtrack right now. It's one of my favorite study OSTs.

To solve the people not saving problem, just have a secondary auto save that saves every 10 mins and at checkpoints. The manual save would be a different save file independent from automatically save. That way people can use whichever save they need.

Hey Thomas, I am really happy for you and the team! Congratulations mate, the game looks fantastic!
I am so excited! I loved the first one so much, it's a masterpiece! Definitely one the best games I have ever played!
I loved Soul Link as a gameplay mechanic in Blind Forest. I really hope you guys will manage to have it again in Wisps.
I would also like to ask if you have in Wisps more dungeon-specific gameplay mechanics like the gravity one in Forlorn Ruins.
Thank you and everyone that works in the game, love you all!

Why did they CGI this game? The backgrounds are hand-drawn probably, but the characters and their animation are all computerized now. Sad really, Ori 1 was REALLY beautiful and smooth, me and my wife could immediately tell this was not as good-looking and smooth as the first one.

Erm.. the characters and many of the backgrounds were 3D models in the original.. animated and then exported as sprites..

Interview with Thomas on the GI Show as part of their developer roundtable.

Touches on the original Ori being a bit strapped for resources and how having more available this time around impacted Will of the Wisps.

Fantastic showing at E3 this year thomasmahler - well done and congrats to the team! The work being put into the game is clearly evident and I can't wait to play. Was really blown away at the visual improvements (the contextual lighting on the environment when Ori is near is amazing) as well as the overhaul to combat. Really can't wait.

Are you guys targeting 4K 60FPS on the One X?
