Doesn't charging for online hurt online communities more than preventing crossplay? Not even half of console gamers subscribe to psn and live. Your principles should lead you to boycott all consoles that charge an online access fee. Gold and plus also hurt small developers because that less money for players to spend on games and it conditions the fanbase to wait for indie games to become free which hurts small developers.
Yeah it sucks, too.
Not having to pay to play online is one of the reasons PC gaming is able to support smaller communities.
I currently pay for both Plus and Xbox Live, so I'll accept that I'm part of that problem.

Also if cross play is the worst they got then I think I can live. If they go online only then I'm sticking with Nintendo.

Cross play between consoles isn't even at the level of refinement where it could even be considered anti consumer to not support it to me. Fortnite's cross play is worse than Paragon's. In paragon the pools were together, you didn't have to invite a PS4 player to a PC server, and vice versa.

Some third party group needs to make a cross play online service to make everything as smooth as can be. Universal friends list, voice communication, report gamer to a support team. Xbox, and Nintendo's online service should only be used for buying games, they should just merge all online play with the cross play service of Amazon for example. Then playstation people may feel left out not being able to only pay for one online service, and buy one dlc, game version, or expansion for it to work on all of their systems. But this won't happen, Microsoft won't give up Xbox Live Gold subs, Nintendo is probably open to it though.

Microsoft seems to want it bad, they should make a case for people that just don't care. They should get more and more console crossplay games on Switch as if they were fighting for developers to put games on their own console. We shall see how bad they want it. I wonder if they will do this.

Kind of runs in parallel to Trump supporter mentality - "I don't care about anti-consumer practices until they directly affect me." Complete hypocrisy.

lmao, this is video games, not a life threatening issue. Sorry I don't feel compassion for your poor Fortnite account not going to your prefered deluxe toy.

Honestly, I've never thought about it. Neither last generation nor at the beginning of this generation. Imo, other points are much more decisive, like games, price, power, mobilty. No idea why this is such a big thing right now and not already at the start of online gaming years ago?

Hello no lol. Sony's game output is amazing and after owning the base Xbox One, MS doesn't impress me.

You implied it and tried to liken people saying they don't care about a crossplay feature in VIDEOGAMES to trump supporters saying they don't care about actual social/racial etc issues going on.

And considering you were warned, I would say the mods agree.
Fair enough. It was a dumb thought and not what I really meant. I deserved the warning and take back the post. My bad here.

It feels to me as if Microsoft is jumping up its own fan base on this to put Sony in a bad light as much as possible. Phil Spencer loves to talk to his fan base as all the time on twitter.

But maybe it's ok that Microsoft is pushing this atm.

Whether PS4 (or PS5) have cross play or not will have zero effect on my purchases. It's not an issue for me.

I mean I only got a PS4 because Bloodborne and Yakuza. And one of those is seeing PC ports. Crossplay isn't important to me, but it is nice to play with my friends on different platforms. I wouldn't have gotten into FF14 if it wasn't crossplay between PS3/PS4/PC.

Probably just gonna invest in a PC if there isn't really any console exclusives.

I don't think it could get any worse than PS3 ($599, get a second job) even with a more forgiving internet back in the day. And even with Sony completely fucking up out the gate they still matched Xbox 360.

This crossplay talk is amplified because of the account lockout and the fact that it's Fortnite on the new Switch hotness. By the time the PS5 hype train rolls around with shit like God of War 2 or Bloodborne 2 or whatever this shenanigans isn't going to be near as impactful as people want to believe.
We'll see! I think they still need to be wary as they have real competition this time. Microsoft is hungry and I feel like they're going to come out swinging this time with everything they have. Sony can't afford to get complacent again.

Nintendo is also doing extremely well at the moment.

So we'll see. Can they deliver another PS4 and keep the momentum going? I'm certainly curious to find out.

The biggest reason I bought a Switch was because of Sony's attitudes. It saddens me that they keep doubling down this attitude, as it will become only a home for a few exclusives of my interest instead of the home for all my gaming, as it has always been.

Makes sense that they would.

I really like the direction that MS is going. They say the right things (for me, at least) when it comes to services, power of hardware, etc. Ultimately though, they need to sell me with the games. Last gen, 360 had by far the more interesting exclusives at the start of the gen, throughout the gen the gap closed and eventually Sony came out on top, which they carried into this gen. MS still hasn't really stopped the bleeding there...even franchises I did care about on their side (Halo, Gears) no longer interest me....343 has yet to make a Halo game I care about, and Gears is in the same boat. Forza Horizon looks great but I'm not going to buy a console for a yearly racing game.

Acquiring studios is a step in the right direction, but if I'm being honest those studios don't exactly make the type/quality of games that will be a big enough a factor.

There are so many MUCH more important things than crossplay that you have to be out of your mind to make decision based on this alone. Who would have thought that Xbox One launch was going to be such a nightmare, and it had very little to do with crossplay.

Nope. As long as they keep making games I'm interested in I'll stick with them and Nintendo. And when it comes to online, not locking F2P games and party chats behind a paywall matters a whole lot more to me than crossplay.

Sorry for not reading the previous 34 pages, but honest question here - beyond Fortnite and Minecraft, what games are walled in around PSN where everything else is cross-play?

The issue is a bit of a non-starter from me as i dont play either of those games, but what I have played of Warframe, War Thunder, and Paragon; all of those games were cross-play with their PC counterparts.

Already switching to PC when it comes to multiplayer games. PS+ just isn't worth it for me at all even when I used the cheapest deals I could get (42-43€ for 12 mon or plus extra 3 mon). If Sony has great games that I'm interested in singleplayer perspective or local multiplayer then I will most likely grab the next PS when its really cheap. I can wait, I'm patient man when it comes to these things. Sony is just being greedy when it comes to multiplayer games. They don't host third party game's servers, why should I pay to access them? Although I hate PC DRM in every single multiplayer game effectively I know what I'm playing for.

Exactly, for the numbers. More players means games have longer lifespans, which can be great for some smaller games where it's already hard to find matches online. Developers want this possibly even more than gamers.

Sure but PS4 already cross-plays with PC on some games so that would surely give more than enough playerbase to satisfy? Give me party cross play (no idea how) and it woudl be much more interesting

Yes, Sony's shitty content blocking practices have direct effect how much money I spend on their platforms, for example:
1. Canceled PS+ subscription
2. Purchased multi-platform games on other platforms regardless on PS exclusive content, including RE7, Destiny2, CoDs etc
3. Skipped PS exclusives (or purchased them used/high discount)

So, I'll be skipping PS5 and taking my money to more consumer friendly platforms unless they change their ways.

Nintendo fans are the worst hypocrites. They have no problem with the anti consumer practices of selling ports for 60$ and measly absolutely shitty first party sales. Meanwhile, Sony offers great sales and 40$ for technically competent high production value remakes like Rachet and Clank and SoTC in addition to high production value first party games. I am quite sure even an AA Sony exclusive like Detroit cost more to make than any game in the Switch first party lineup with the exception of BoTW. That is the real anti consumer bullshit, holding customers hostage by selling low cost games for 60$. And apparently PS4 owners are suffering from Stockholm Syndrome.

Doesn't affect me personally but a few more shitty moves like this and if Microsoft keeps it up it I may change next gen. Or at least be open about owning both consoles. Sony better watch it because they're turning into Microsoft at the end of last gen.

Of course not.

Playstation is the market leader so it is perfectly understandable why they do not want cross platform.

Nah. I don't really play multiplayer games besides fighting games anyway. I wish they would loosen up on it, it's stupid but as long as they have the Japanese game market I don't see myself not owning a Sony console.

Being that I really prefer Multiplayer games, I'm already seriously eyeing a total abandonment of consoles (After Genesis, I have been a Sony only player) and heading to PC.

My kids already play on PC's (7 and 9), and its great cause they can fortnite with anyone of their friends, and soon (?) Rocket League will have cross platform parties, which again Sony will remain sheltered from the others, so they can play with anyone, which is great.

Switch is my first Nintendo console since SNES. I disliked BOTW and I loved Mario+Rabbids. I didn't play it in the last 2 months, mostly, because of their services. So, come again?

I'm seriously considering Microsoft after their recent changes and a let down from both Sony and Nintendo.

If crossplay is so important for those non PS4 users. Why not scream to every developer to make every game crossplay? So i can see threads in the coming weeks about Battlefield 5 en COD to be crossplay?

Doesn't really bother me as I don't play online much.

I asked my son if he'd prefer to play Fortnite on Switch and his answer was "no, I'd lose.all my skins". This I think is the likely answer for the majority. If it's a choice between cross-console play and keeping all their stuff, they'll choose stuff. PlayStation still has cross-ply with pc and mobile so it's not like it's completely isolated.

The issue isn't cross play, it is Sony keeping our Epic accounts hostage so we can't use it on competing platforms.

Sony has the better games imo, more diversity and japanese devs. I play maybe twice a year online.

I'll leave sony the day they make a console thats the first vision from MS for the xbox One.

Not a fan of their policy but I'm a satisfied customer and this issue does not impact my satisfaction. I would have like to play Destiny with friends on Xbox a few years ago but back then both MS and Sony were hoping their wall garden would win, and Sony did.
