In fairness, I wouldn't have given JD the money he wanted, either. Tons of those signings from this offseason end up being crummy. Things will get real awkward with the union if Harper draws less interest than we originally thought, which could happen.
No, Boston can go a year without winning the division.Man if the Yankees could please lose a few more games I would be very thankful. At this rate we are going to have two 105+ win teams in the AL East.
Well this would absolutely grind my gears more than anything. Hand is secretly one of the best bullpen arms in baseball. I'd rather see him go to the Astros.
They're not gonna give up a MLB 3rd Baseman with less than a year of service time for a reliever they don't really need. Hand is good, but the shelf life on relievers isn't something I'd personally be willing to give up MLB talent for, particularly every day level talent. No, Boston can go a year without winning the division.

Eh it's still early. I doubt that will be the final asking price. Then again maybe I'm severely overestimating the ability of the Padres front office. They're not gonna give up a MLB 3rd Baseman with less than a year of service time for a reliever they don't really need.
Most of my fellow Padres fans have overly high expectations of what a decent reliever will return. I don't see it; the Padres grow relievers on trees.Eh it's still early. I mean, sure, I'm not disagreeing with that, but Padres fans are seriously suggesting we should ask for Miguel Andujar for Hand, which is totally absurd.Hand is more than a "decent" reliever, he's a wipeout reliever who will command a high price. But no one is going to give up a young talented position player already in the majors for one. No playoff team is going to open up another hole to fill a need.
There's no reason to trade Hand early, either because even a shutdown reliever isn't going to take you from bad to good and it's more likely teams are going to be desperate for pen help in late-June.Yeah, Hand just signed a 3/$20m deal, and Devers is a long-term control guy making min, would be silly for the Sox to pull the trigger on. I'd be way okay with it, but it ain't happening.
The Chapman trade to the Cubs screwed with everybody's expectations. That was a perfect storm of desperation for a team that had one hole left in its best chance to win a title in over 100 years. That isn't happening again yet people are acting like it's the standard, hence the outrage over the Herrera trade yesterday and the Royals not getting Soto or another top tier prospect.I mean, sure, I'm not disagreeing with that, but Padres fans are seriously suggesting we should ask for Miguel Andujar for Hand, which is totally absurd.

I think the contract helped his value, but I don't think the contract is nearly as relevant to the most frequently mentioned trade partners like the Red Sox and Yankees who have no real need to add Brad Hand beyond the rich getting richer.Sure. They likely had an even better chance of bringing in a good return last year and didn't. I don't see the contract or another year on the arm helping Hand's value. Guess we'll have to see who gets desperate, or perhaps the Pads actually think they're getting close or are trying to justify the Myers and Hosmer contracts by trying to force a window? Who knows.
I probably rate Myers higher than you do, I imagine. I think he's a productive player when healthy and is likely to be even more productive with more good players around him. Moving Myers would require them to eat salary too, and I don't think we're in the phase where we should be paying a ton of money to players who aren't actually on the team.Myers making $22.5m per from 2020-2022 is really problematic seeing as he's likely a 2 win/yr above replacement player if healthy, 3 at best. The Padres will be lucky to get 6 wins out of him at $10m per. This club can't afford that and compete. Least problematic? C'mon now.
