Could someone explain to me why GamePass is mentioned when discussing how well certain games do? How does that affect sales?

So... is Rainbow Six Siege like Ubisoft's biggest success story for ages or what? IIRC The Division was much bigger at launch but has tailed off with the sequel imminent. RSS on the other hand just keeps on trucking, and it's also the older game is it not..?

To be charting ahead of like MK8D (albeit it's available on more platforms) for instance is unreal.

Holy shit at SoD2. MS weren't lieing when they said it exceeded expectation. Big grats to MS and Undead Labs!

Hope State of Decay 3 will be an actual AAA polished game now, there's literally no excuse not to do it, game is popular.

I'm still hoping Nintendo does the "Game Pass" aka subscription thing with their Classics like how they have NES coming. Do it for all of their old systems.

Super impressive showing for SoD2. Hopefully this leads to more great stuff for Game Pass.

Forza Horizon 4 is gonna be massive.

That's a damned strong top-20. The variety and (relative) density of new releases vs mainstays is super encouraging. I can't think of a time the broader console market was thriving like this.

Specifically re: SoD2, I figure we're going to start seeing people inclined for a negative angle to shift their reaction to "if Game Pass games are selling well, it must mean subscription numbers are actually not good." I'd expect at least one or two of those by the end of the thread. Not that it couldn't play out that way, but with no outside signal to that effect, the leap is premature.

I tried state of decay 2 not a bad game on PC. I just hate the windowed fullscreen bs on Microsoft store games, and my game pass expired (I will not be renewing).

Also God of War is killing it.

I think it's just an interesting observation: although a game is on game pass and available via subscription, the individual sale numbers are still very high. I guess people expect that as game pass becomes more popular, the sale numbers of Xbox exclusives would reduce.

kinda impressive that the game releases on gamepads at the same time and still gets to number one. Interesting to see for sure.

Xbox had it's best May but its sales are nothing to write home about:

PS4: ~223K
NSW: ~167K
XB1: ~145K

SoD2 did great. GoW actually launched last month.

Not only that, GOW is #2 for 2018. SoT and SoD aren't even in top 10. So people shouldn't think that SoD 2 sales are anywhere close to GoW lol. It did very good for debut month though and undead lab deserves congratulations for that.

I mean we were talking about word of mouth, not stopping sales. Tons of Bethesda games are examples of buggy games doing well sales wise.

Yeah we'll see.

We already are seeing. Why do you think we are seeing all the major players going subs and even Sony is scrambling to get downloads going.

Hi Benji. Can you explain us... How? Like, it makes no sense how a fixed, low priced subscription is beneficial to anyone but consumers, unless the business is set up in a very innovative ways. Definitely curious.

Honestly it's something I'm going to have to watch more and pay closer attention to because I want expecting this sort of boost to full game sales. That's something credit to MatPiscatella who said he could see that happening prior to the service launching.

I was thinking Game Pass would either cannibalize sales or at best would have a mild positive impact on sales. Certainly not the huge boosts we are seeing. I though Game Pass would be a huge success but primarily due to it driving recurring subscription revenue, not boosting full packaged and digital game sales.

My hunch is a rather simple one in the end. Exposure. Game Pass puts the game potentially into far more people's hands than it other wise would have. This is going to convert some people into purchasing it outright that are already GP subscribers in case they eventually unsubscribe. It's also, probably more importantly, having those GP subscribers inform their friends about the games they are playing and they are then going out to buy the game themselves, even though they aren't GP subscribers.

All in all it's working wonders and FH4 has the potential to be seriously huge imo. Especially with the expanded multiplayer / shared world features

I was wondering which version of Street Fighter collection sold the most, I suspect the Switch market is a good fit for that game but not so sure with the huge install base differences.

Also, I don't know why people are surprised when big new first party games chart at number 1 on release month. That's generally the case if there isn't a big 3rd party title, right?

The same situation appears again as another MS exclusive SOT also disappeared in Magicpork's leak before...

So why only and always MS exclusive? what Magicpork got was wrong or incomplete?

This just shows MS exclusives are selling immensely well in digital form and in this case SoD2 being a $30 title has made this even more impressive...

Do you have a source for that claim or are we just randomly talking out of our asses again?

Every country I checked the game was or even still is #1 in the most purchased Xbox Store charts. For weeks. Both the standard and ultimate editions.
Japan, Spain, Germany, Australia and UK charts.

#1 in the most purchased Xbox Store charts means nothing. It's a new exclusive game. ofc it will be high

Ok that is what I was thinking. It's pretty amazing that at a reduced cost AND being available on GamePass, that the game still managed to be #1.

After Phil's comments I was expecting State of Decay 2 to do well on the charts but taking the #1 spot is insane, especially for a $30 title. Props to Undead Labs! It's also great seeing God of War still up there and the strong Nintendo representation. Great performance for the industry all around.

I'm definitely excited to see what happens on Game Pass when Forza Horizon 4 drops, and next year when Gears 5 arrives.

Wait, so dark souls was included in tracking for May? How is it not in the top 10 at least for PS4?

I'll explain this again;
Labo is aimed at people who have no money of their own.
It is bought solely to be gifted (outside of the number f adults who want it who do have disposable incomes, who bought at launch).
Its sales ceiling per month is basically as birthday presents for kids that have birthdays that month.
Christmas is different, because it is the equivalent of all kids getting an extra birthday that month.

This is how 'big' toy sales work

Imagine being the kid that gets Labo instead of Pokemon or Smash during the holidays.

I feel like Forza Horizon 4 could be the first game in the franchise (Horizon and Motorsport) to finally top Gran Turismo to be the best selling racing IP or franchise in the industry. I guess we'll see.

Yep. Now the real fun part is to start thinking about Streaming and Game Pass. If Twitch weren't a thing, would Game Pass be as (hypothetically for the moment) good at selling full games?

How many streamers streamed Sea of Thieves or SoD2 because of having it in Game Pass? How many sales did those streamers help generate?

I can see a strong case being made that Streaming and Game Pass are symbiotic in a not small way?

So this means the GP model is only benefitial until it reaches an "optimimum Max User Count" that once passed starts the cannibalization of retail sales right?

Which means MS are probably going to rise prices up or create price tiers at some point to keep that user count in that optimum level.

Could be wrong though, I just started my MBA so not an expert here haha.

That's what I keep wondering about. At some point, this scale should be tipped, right? Unless the overall audience continues to grow? This feels more like a 2025 problem than a 2018 one though.

I think so too. The question is, will this equilibrium continue as the adoption rates for Game Pass continue to increase, or will there ever be a cannibalisation point?
