That doesn't make sense, it's a Microsoft IP, it shouldn't need negotiation.
It needs to be written in the contract somewhere. How does the calculation for each download for Moon Studios work etc. This simply wasn't a thing when the contract for the game was made originally. It's not clear whether or not they will still do that.

Liking the momentum Microsoft are building here.
Comes off right after the heels of an impressive E3 showing.
Happy Undead Labs scored a hit and Microsoft can only give them better funding from here on out since they're now family.

And seems like Game Pass is a haven for game demoing.
They've sort of taken a cue from the days of the 360 where people bought allot of games after playing demos. Ofcourse Game Pass costs money but for the amount of games you get its pretty much the safe way to demo and play before maybe buying the games.
Phil is onto something here.

Never imagined we'd say SoD2 at the top of this list.

Glad to see it doing this well, despite the poor reviews it's actually quite a fun, unique and addicting little game.

Do we have an idea of the number of XGP subscriptions for the month and how that has been trending? Apologies if this has been covered already, but definitely interested to see how it correlates to the software sales. Like others have mentioned in this thread I think the exposure from XGP helps tremendously.

I expected this and glad to see I was right.

We're gonna see the same thing happen for days gone, better sales performance than era expects.

Zombies + open world is shown to be a time and time again successful formula. Add in coop to the mix, even better.

It's viral marketing. Everyone with an Xbox virtually has several friends with gamepass playing these games. Means they see clips or pictures etc, see their friends having fun and then buy it...

That is how Spencer explained it in his interview. He sounded as surprised as everyone else that it had boosted sales, but I'm guessing deep down they had done their projections.

Gamepass is now arguably the most important distribution model in the industry. One I'm positive Sony and Nintendo will be copying very very soon.

On the 'I agree' side is the fact that I often check out what my friends are playing and am apt to download things I otherwise would not. Oh, and fuck that guy for playing cliker heroes and having it show up in my feed. *i will not play f2p microtransaction games...i will not play f2p microtransaction games....*

On the 'i dont agree' side, we cannot know how much it sold without gamepass, could be more could be less. The real test will come when other companies panies decide whether or not to release big games on gp. If we see farcry6 or blackops V, then we'll know the data is solid.

Honestly it's something I'm going to have to watch more and pay closer attention to because I want expecting this sort of boost to full game sales. That's something credit to MatPiscatella who said he could see that happening prior to the service launching.

I was thinking Game Pass would either cannibalize sales or at best would have a mild positive impact on sales. Certainly not the huge boosts we are seeing. I though Game Pass would be a huge success but primarily due to it driving recurring subscription revenue, not boosting full packaged and digital game sales.

My hunch is a rather simple one in the end. Exposure. Game Pass puts the game potentially into far more people's hands than it other wise would have. This is going to convert some people into purchasing it outright that are already GP subscribers in case they eventually unsubscribe. It's also, probably more importantly, having those GP subscribers inform their friends about the games they are playing and they are then going out to buy the game themselves, even though they aren't GP subscribers.

All in all it's working wonders and FH4 has the potential to be seriously huge imo. Especially with the expanded multiplayer / shared world features
Pretty much. That's why I think sunset overdrive would've benefitted. The game needed exposure and for people to just get their hands on it.

It's also why I think every game should have a demo but that's another argument

Its just good marketing for the game. With Gamepass its easier to jump in. So more people in your friends list play it making you looking at the game also. So you get that ripple effect.

Can someone clarify for me; digital (not gamepass) are included in the rankings, right?

I bought State of Decay 2 digital and wanted to know if it counted.

well there goes the argument that Game Pass causes games to not sell as well. Phil already said games still sell well, and this proves it.

Even with Game Pass, people still ending up buying State of Decay 2.

Really hope PlayStation Now gets some first party games on their service near launch after the download option becomes available.

A very long time I think, MS and Sony make very different first party games. Sony concentrate on SP, people could get Game Pass for a month, play GOW, Horizon etc and be done with it. If they made MP focused games like MS, then I'm sure Sony would have a Game Pass like service going right now.
You do know that SoD2 is primarily a single player game?

And of course it would benefit Sony too. No matter how much their games sell they can always reach a potentially much higher public with a low subscription price.

If it works for Sony to bundle their releases there's no way it wouldn't work for a gamepass like service. Worst case scenario they bundle a 10 day trial with the console and receive far more money in the long run from those that keep it.

Never would I have guessed State of Decay would've topped the month. Congrats to Undead and Microsoft.

I really like the game, but I admit I haven't played it much as I'd like (it stresses me out so much, lol. just like the first game).

The idea of Gamepass helping sales is so interesting to me. I mean... I didn't buy SoD2 or Sea of Thieves because they were on Gamepass, but I guess I did already preorder the Ultimate Edition of Forza Horizon 4 though.

I don't understand why they would waste money and buy the games though. They are not demos...they are FULL games. Plus with bing rewards its easy to pay for your games pass monthly fee for free. The only games pass game I'll actually "buy" over the next 3 years in Halo Infinite because Halo is my most beloved franchise. Everything else I'll play for free on the service.
Dvd/Bluray movies and TV shows don't stop selling because its on netflix/hulu. It actually help them stay relevant actually.

Crazy to see state of decay there, even despite the negative reception. I suppose games like Horizon will do extremely well.

Also, glad to see the game pass model succeeding.

I can echo the above. Whilst Labo may pick up during the holiday season, I think it's fair to say it hasn't performed as well as many thought it would.
Granted, Labo is a bit like PSVR in expectation vs reality.

So let's talk about Labo, shall we? It had a weak start in April, then in May the NPD legs were pretty weak as well (down like 70% in May)....not to mention, a variety of Nintendo games outsold it this month.

I don't want to give exact Labo sell-through numbers out of fear of NPD retribution, but Labo's muted performance certainly doesn't help its current situation with retailers. My fear is that sales will dwindle enough to where retailers will lose faith in Nintendo's holiday strategy before it even begins...and they start prioritizing shelf space for other products.

I have no doubt Labo will do decently this holiday, but will that be enough for Nintendo to encourage further development in it? Or will it be a one-off funky experiment that just didn't sell enough to justify the ROI? The longer this malaise persists, the more my doubts grow.

Nintendo already said that they have future projects for Labo ready.

Tremendous news for State of Decay 2 which saw success despite some unfair (in my opinion) criticism early on and also was on offer day 1 with Game Pass. Phil Spencer talked about how game pass was helping games like SOD2 do better in sales but honestly I was skeptical .....now I am a believer.

Most people who downplay Days Gone in comparison to SoD2 in this very thread mention the main attractor of SoD being co-op...

The same situation appears again as another MS exclusive SOT also disappeared in Magicpork's leak before...

So why only and always MS exclusive? what Magicpork got was wrong or incomplete?

MS probably sells huge amounts of copies in their PC store, something Sony doesn't have. The Xbox sales numbers are even more impressive when taking this into account.

That's not how business works.....
None of us are in the gaming industry so we wouldn't know, I was under the impression if someone owns the IP they can do whatever they want with it at least.

We've seen nothing that supports your claim.

Considering SOD2 didn't show up in the physical only leak, the digital split must have been huge, which is a trend MS (and others) must be salivating at. This is the second game where I underestimated its sales due to believing they might be cannibalized by gamepassand I'm wondering if gamepass is just adding to the player base or if some cannibalizing is taking place and the sales of SOT and SOD2 would be even stronger on the charts. Really curious to see how Forza performs to give a better indication of what is happening.

It feels weird to say this but DSR not charting doesn't surprise me because it seemed a lot of the buzz was around the Switch version and that was delayed. I also worry about it's performance after the delay, think they really fucked up there.

Its worthy of discussion definitely, but I don't know if it's worth it anymore because it makes lots of users here very immature:
Good to see labo not in top 20. Good job, murikans.

Frankly that is my hope. I think Labo is and will remain a ridiculously over priced kids toy that is not kid friendly at all (in terms of creating) and from what I am hearing is not garnering lasting appeal in terms of play. Let it die.... lets move on.

My Strategy of buying a Labo Variety pack and keeping it unopened until my toddler is ready to participate may be the wrong strategy. Hold and save as collectors item instead.

That would be amazing. Unfortunately, I only see monthly buckets. Which is a bummer.

I was expecting this to happen at E3 tbh. Maybe next year.

I was really expecting a merger between XBL and GamePass. They could probably get away with pricing it at 15-20 per month or 150 per year.
