Game has extemely solid core mechanics but everything else surrounding it pretty much sucks.

Yeah, I'm a bit suprised this reviewed so well. Could be a very good game, the basics are all there, but feels like it would have needed another six months. Really hope this will get the support it deserves. Don't care about singleplayer personally, but more options and QoL improvements are a must.

It's got the Mario brand attached to it.
My copy from Amazon arrived yesterday and I spent the whole afternoon/evening with it.
Attention, horrible (but true) analogy incoming:

Mario Tennis Aces is like an amazing, juicy steak (core gameplay mechanics), that is overcooked on some parts (adventure mode) and very small to begin with. The steak also doesn't come with any side dishes (outfits, rackets) and the forks are clumsy to handle (menus).
Unless you are really into steak and able to appreciate it, you shouldn't order it.

I said in January when it was revealed to the effect of, "I don't even want this game to come out in Spring if it's not finished. It could be a holiday or 2019 game if it's good".

i'll play it.
Not sure full price though

Your expectations are on you. They delivered on everything they promised for me and that based on just the demo experience based on the new game systems. The adventure mode was just a value-add for me.
Its called buying a game at full price, which you're obviously clueless about, and they didnt deliver on everything aka the reviews, and using a demo as an excuse for the final product? lol good one

I'm confident Camelot/Nintendo will address a majority of the issues from Aces. They put out the demo in the beginning of the month and fixed the biggest issue of the game being it's netcode and now matches are more likely to be smoother than before when it was basically a 50/50 whether or not you'll run into someone with a good connection then another 50/50 if the game would stay stable whereas now the game will quickly get it's shit together if it can stabilize itself.

Then there's the precedent of Nintendo in general being very receptive to criticism and addressing previous game's problems. Like ARMS on top of adding fighters, stages, and weapons have tried to address the lacking single player by adding in badges, pictures, and new bosses in Grand Tour mode ontop of adding Party Crash to engage it's players more into multiplayer. Splatoon also has attempted to address it's problems but it's done so at a much slower pace but it's also added alot of content into the game.

If people are still going to wait and see if they fix these issues than that's fine but personally Nintendo has done really well to support their games overtime and I have confidence they'll do the same here. I can also see them adding some stuff to single player like adding a hard mode to Adventure or adding cups to Solo Tournament mode.

Yeah, it's pretty weird how many posters will go to war for this game. Yes, you can have fun with it (if you are into tennis and competetive MP) but for the average gamer, this game is just a bad deal.

I agree, defo shouldnt have been at full price especially with the lack of content it offers and the lazy adventure mode. £45 I paid for this, £30 it should have been

I absolutely love the core mechanics, best Mario Tennis ever...but: That adventure mode is frustrating as hell. I'm at the last bit and some AI in normal matches are either stupid as bread or incredibly hard to beat. And those extra challenges you're almost required to do to get a better racket? Like keeping the ball aloft for 400 rallies while playing on that goddamn ship with the pole in the middle....this is something else. I rarely get above 50, because the AI hits the pole and there's no way to reach it that fast for me without any meter. Boom, life gone, three times and you're out. Reach the ball with a trickshot and the game physics decide that hitting the pole afterwards results in a glitchy high air lob, that lands back in my half, another life gone.

It puts me on the brink of "throwing the controller at the screen". That's something i rarely see in Mario Sports or Nintendo games in general :(

I don't think i'll reach the end of the adventure mode, but i love the multiplayer. So it will definitely see some heavy use at may place.

I couldn't care less for the adventure mode, but reading some of the stuff makes me a bit regretful for buying it right now.

Not because it's not worth buying, but because I'm 100% sure this game will be supported like other online Nintendo games and I'd be jumping into a much more complete game had I waited some more months. Combine this with the fact that I'm occupied by other stuff atm (like Octo Expansion) and I'm wondering if I should've saved money for Octopath Traveller in the meantime).

Then again, the demo tourney gave me some of the finest online fun I have ever experienced. The core game is just too fucking good. Maybe all my regrets will met away from an intense enough tiebreaker.

If you enjoyed the demo, you will like this because it's pretty much the same thing with some basic local-multiplayer options hidden behind convoluted menus. In fact, the demo had more to work towards with character unlocks.

The core game is great, but as a $60 AAA release, this needs more cups, more variety, more things to work towards and that doesn't even touch on the adventure mode. Aces is easily outdone in content by MK8, ARMS, Splatoon, and Pokken. No question.

You got an amazing deal as the GBP is pretty weak right now (ca. 51€).
I paid 58€. Will probably sell my copy on eBay before word of mouth drops the price.

The most frustrating part about this is, I loved Mario Tennis on N64, loved the demo and wanted to like this game badly.
With it's core gameplay the game has everything to become one of my all time casual MP favorites. No idea what happened during development or why they thought this tiny amount of content was "enough". But after one night, I already feel like there's nothing that makes me jump back in.
Since it's slow season for games atm, I'll play for another week or two.

The funny thing is that classic mode is a much better simulation of an actual tennis match's mechanics than AO Tennis and Tennis World Tour. How sad.

Had a really intense game that I lost 3-2. Went to check the rankings and guess what? The one I faced is Top 4 worldwide. Proud of myself

I understand why people find this game disappointing, but personally I was not hoping for any kind of adventure mode and I'm having a blast playing online. I'm NOT good, though, lol, I need to get good badly.

Kinda wish there was an option to disable double tapping the X button.

It fucks with me because you double tap the other buttons.

Is this game worth getting a Switch for?
I've been dying for some low-tension couch co-op with the girlfriend.

Also, do you need to do any SP to unlock stuff for MP?

I mean I got a Switch to play this, lol. But then my favourite game in the series is 64, not the handheld RPG-ish ones.

Played through rnpugh of the intro to get padt the tutorial and then went straight to online. Netcode seems improved from the demo which is a sigh if relief, only had one iffy connection but only for a brief moment. Currently 1-2 standard 3-4 simple, very easy to get in the habit of one more match.
Who is everyone playing as? I've been switching between Daisy, Waluigi, Peach, and Rosalina.

To me yes it's worth it and no, you don't need to unlock anything.

That's not completely right. You need to unlock the courts in adventure mode to add them to your "Personal Court"-list when playing Multiplayer, so you can add or remove them from the random choice list (with or without hazards).

I can also see them adding some stuff to single player like adding a hard mode to Adventure or adding cups to Solo Tournament mode.

Moreover, there is a specific precedent for Camelot working on post-launch content with Mario Golf: World Tour on 3DS, although in that case most of it came in the form of paid DLC (lots of new courses) and they'd frankly be crazy to take the same approach with Aces. I got into Mario Golf 3DS quite late, as I received it as a Club Nintendo freebie, but it was built to accommodate the regular addition of variant competitions on top of the seasonal tournaments, by all appearances easy to develop and push into the game on Camelot's side. Here's hoping for something similar.

I'm not assuming anything about Aces until I've heard it announced concretely, though.

If you enjoyed the demo, you will like this because it's pretty much the same thing with some basic local-multiplayer options hidden behind convoluted menus. In fact, the demo had more to work towards with character unlocks.

Since I've decided to file Aces under "interested, but hold off for now" I'm actually thinking of putting the budget I had set aside for it towards Sushi Striker, because that's one instance of a decent demo for a full release that is substantially bigger in scope (as was visible right in the demo's menus, ranks, and achievements), whereas Aces was a case of a stupendous demo for a full release that, by the sound of it, doesn't add all that much to what we've already seen. And to think Sushi Striker was pilloried for its value.

Can anyone confirm that if you want to play 2P (local) doubles, your only options are playing against AI or Friends? That there's no way to find a doubles match against just anyone?

I've been dying for some low-tension couch co-op with the girlfriend.
Same. Got my wife hyped. But it sounds like the co-op options are few.

I have to make a decision tomorrow if I'm picking it up or switching my pre-order to another game

Played the story mode and it was exactly like I expected: A glorified tutorial with some gimmicks. It's not that bad so far like people were saying but definitely don't buy just for it. It's not worth.

btw, I played 10 online matches and no lag here. It was pretty normal. I'll play more tomorrow.

No one here is an "average gamer" tho so not sure how this argument is sustaintable at all.

Many Mario games received less than what Aces did, including it predecessor which had like 50 on Metacritic. lol It's not that uncommon for spin-offs to receive those scores.

Same, tried to cancel yesterday but couldn't. I was hoping my worries would have been for nothing, but now its worse than I thought.

Really shows how utterly incompetent Nintendo is with regards to online games. And they want to actually charge people for this service?

I would say that it's more like Camelot than Nintendo when Mario Kart 8 DX, Arms and Splatoon 2 are pretty much simple in their menu and options.

I am going for overcooked before this now, I am going to wait and see if it gets a lot of patched dl content and then will get it a bit later on.

Personally I cant wait for toad and GO VACATION because that's my Wii sports itch scratched right there! Until Switch sports gets released,

Some people in this thread have said that local 2p will allow you to matchmake an online doubles match

hope it's true

Drop shot is kinda broken, what's the downside to using it?

none. A huge flaw in the game. Only perfectly timed dropshots out of star zones should be effective imo
But in aces, it's too easy to pull of and really hard to return in properly.
I think it's escpecially bad that "power characters" like Bowser can utilize it so well.

Drop shot is slow and easy to return if you see it coming... like most shots.

Why don't you just post "git gud" lol

Roflmao.

No.

Drop shots are effective because it's not as commonly used. If you replace a single button press shot with the drop shot and people use it all the time then people will watch for it a lot more often and are prepared to return the drop shot. Because most of the time you only have to move left or right, suddenly having to move forward to return a drop shot is obviously much harder.

If you think it's so overpowered, you should just spam it and win all your matches until Camelot nerfs it.
