This game looks interesting and has good reviews. Is it enjoyable with a controller? Controller support is listed on the steam page but the videos show a cursor for item managemant as well as during gameplay, so I'm a bit worried it is built around mouse+keyboard for controls.
Wuppo is also on consoles so controller support is good

I'm going to give some love to The Deadly Tower Of Monsters, a very fun top-down shooter with a retro sci-fi B-movie vibe by the developers of Zeno Clash. No Idea why this game hasn't been talked about more.

Mechanically it's nothing new, but the vibe is really great :)

Has anyone posted this? I think it would qualify.

Rise to Ruins is a village simulator mixed in with tower defense. I've been playing it since yesterday (I bought it during the last steam sale), and I'm really enjoying it so far. It's still in Early Access, but the developer seems cool and looks like he updates it quite a bit.

You should probably buy Brigador.

You can customize your mech and shoot things. There are tons of combinations between the weapons and mech layouts. I really don't know what else you would want.

That looks like something I need to play. Bought!

I liked Refunct quite a bit, but $1.47 gets you both Refunct and the developer's excellent second game, Swarmlake. It's easy to compare Swarmlake to Devil Daggers thanks to the endless progression and simple mechanics, including the shotgun function, but it's a very different game. Shoot brown enemies, grab the pink sphere-things to release a shockwave, fire the shotgun at the floor to blast yourself into the sky and then keep shotgunning enemies to basically fly. And then the screen gets cluttered with a few thousand baddies at once, turning the swarm into a massive blob of death.

Amazing games (Refunct and Swarmlake). Thanks to both of you.

Does it have a proper singleplayer campain or is the game all about customizing the mech and roaming around a city? Brigador's soundtrack is A+ and I like the graphics, but I'd love a good story around the whole package. If it's mostly about having fun with the mechs I'm not sure if I need it right now.

It's definitely more geared towards procedurally generated maps for you to fuck around and complete objectives. There is "campaign" that is just a set of missions that slowly introduce you to the mechanics and gameplay, but it's probably not the kind of campaign you want.

It's mission-based mech action. There's cool and interesting overarching lore linking missions together, but the core of the game is tense fast-paced satisfying shootouts and creating your mech build.

I played this on mobile and enjoyed the easier levels. The later stages however reminded me way too much of the programming classes in university that I absolutely hated lol. But for people who don't mind putting code together it surely could be great game.
From what I've seen the game works and plays fine with a controller so you should be good there.

I was thinking this game would be ideally suited to my 144hz monitor and easy to achieve that framerate, but apparently it's been locked to 60 in an update. That's the main thing putting me off at this point.
Yeah I got it on the super cheap as well so found that out afterwards. Really odd for a game like that to be capped at 60.

Quirky game with a really fun cutting mechanic, physics puzzles, and a cool soundtrack. Been a good few years since I played it, but I remember digging it, especially because I'm a sucker for games that feature dynamic destruction, or physics puzzles; and I'd say it's definitely a steal for 90% off.

HLTB clocks it at 2½ Hours for main story.

I was thinking when messing around in Jettomero's photo mode that a lot of these filters (of which there are many) look pretty great, and then I wished I could play the actual game with these filters on, and then I could. This game is magic.
It looks absolutely amazing, like artwork of itself. One of the most visually striking games I've ever seen.

8FE200146853F32C5E6B8C29AB803C882384ACB6

The game literally looks like this. You can make it look all kinds of sweet ways. Drop Shadow makes no sense in 3D, but who cares.

I highly recommend this game if drifting and stumbling around looking at cool colors in space to chill ambient tunes sounds appealing to you. Or this whole colorful comic book aesthetic. Or dopey robots. Or the Grow series in general. Bunch of similarities what with your clumsy red robot pottering around collecting things until you reach the next stage, except for the huge difference that there's no platforming to speak of. I don't know how much "game" there is here, but I feel like that's kind of beyond the point.

So glad I finally picked this up. Almost didn't because some reviews said the gameplay was shallow or whatnot.

Looking for good cheap, mechanically deep RPGs (or SRPGs) that are either action and can be played with a controller (i.e. no crap like Risen) or Turn Based/RTWP. I have a lot, off the top of my head all the Souls games, all the Fallout games, infinity engine bundle, elder scrolls series, Darkest Dungeon, Shadowrun reboot trilogy, Steamworld Heist, xcom1/2, dawn of War 2, wasteland 2, divinity OS, Diablo 3 ROS, Battleforce Templar, Chroma Squad, Valkyria Chronicles, Kingdoms of Amalur, Dragon's Dogma, Torchlight series, all the bioware games, all the Obsidian games, Vampire Bloodlines, Stick of Truth, Victor Vran, all the Supergiant games, Skulls of the Shogun...

I'm running out of suggestions here lol. Also it's gotta be able to run on a laptop hence why I haven't bought Grim Dawn yet

Not really sure if these can be played with a controller but they seem to be the kind of things you are looking for:
- Hard West
- Aarklash: Legacy
- For the King
- Blackguards 1 & 2
- Satellite Reign (you might already have it but it's not on your list)
- Xenonauts
- Halfway
- Voidspire Tactics
- Alvora Tactics
- Massive Chalice

If your laptop is able to run Divinity OS, it'll probably be able to run Grim Dawn too. I have a crappy 950M and played Grim Dawn with really no problem.
Huh, that's good to hear. No word on a PS4 version though right? I'd rather wait for that tbh, and I ran DOS at like 30fps on medium at 900p, plus since it's turn based frame drops didn't bother me as much.

Have Xenonauts and Hard West alrrady, have Satellite Reign too but it runs like complete ass. Also have Massive Chalice but it seems way too simplistic honestly.

I was looking at Halfway though, how's that?

I really don't follow Grim Dawn, so don't know about that. Well, you can always give it a try and then refund if it doesn't run acceptably :D

Everyone should try out Creepy Castle, by Nicalis team (Binding of Isaac).

Cute and charming exploration game with really retro visuals.
The combat is similar to Undertale with different minigames.

It's probably not exactly what you're looking for, but as I never pass up an opportunity to shill for Trails in the Sky -- Trails in the Sky has one of the stronger turn-based battle systems in the JRPG genre. The problem is that in the first game, normal mode is trivially easy and hard mode is poorly balanced such that you'll occasionally run into massive difficulty spikes and/or bosses that take a million years to kill. It's also very story-heavy. But it is cheap and works great with a controller.

Also I've heard very good things about Battle Brothers, though I have no idea what kind of controller support it has.

I don't remember much but I remember enjoying it. Enemies in the final levels felt a bit bullet-spongy but that's not that different from most of the games you mentioned.
I'd consider giving Massive Chalice another chance. I also thought it was simplistic at first but there's a surprising depth in its meta kingdom simulator and battles in the last half of the game.

Chroma Squad is one of my favorite games to have come out in the last couple of years. It's a lite strategy RPG in the vein of Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy Tactics with a lite management-sim element. The story is incredibly fun and endearing, and has a lot of send-ups to Power Rangers/Super Sentai. It's a pure joy to play, and I'd encourage anyone who is even remotely interested to give it a shot.

I second this. The game is incredible. You can find people selling it in the BST thread for like $1 from time to time.

Yup it's fantastic and it recently got an update for creating your own episodes (sadly no sprite editorial importer).

I made a few episodes that are fairly highly ranked on the workshop, but not many people were making episodes - there's a muddled submission process.

I see that Glittermitten Grove is $8, how is that game?

And by that I mean how is Frog Fractions 2. Loved the first one but the mixed reaction to this kinda pushed me away, never dug deeper because people couldn't talk about it without spoiling stuff.

I see this has very mixed reviews on Steam, but i love Meteoidvanias. Is it true the game does not support controllers? that's the only big dealbreaker i see as i can't imagine playing this type of game with keyboard controls?

You can use JoyToKey to map keyboard inputs to the controller to get around this when it happens.

I really disliked it. It's not nearly as funny as it thinks it is, or as the first game is, and the mini games are wrapped up in this ascii top down rpg-lite which is just really bad. Glittermitten Grove is the more fun half of the package, and that's a puddle-deep management game

Here's my nomination, Kalimba

Really nice little platforer where you control two characters simultaneously, using each other as platforms or splitting up through separte paths. Great presentation and slick platforming too.

Am I allowed to recommend a game I published myself? It really hasn't been noticed yet, and I'd love to recommend it to people who love experimental or arcade-style games.

You can buy it in the turn based gems bundle with Templar Battleforce which is Fauxhammer 40k SRPG with a stupid amount of depth for an indie title, a long with two others.

Hmm what is joytokey lol? i ha ellie a wired 360 i use mostly and have never had to do anything weird to make one work? thanks for the tip I will buy it if i can make a controller work
https://joytokey.net/en/
JoyToKey (or Joy2Key) enables PC game controllers to emulate the keyboard and mouse input, so that windows applications and web games can be controlled with your favorite joysticks! Whenever joystick buttons and sticks are pressed, JoyToKey converts them into keyboard strokes and/or mouse movements so that the target application will work as if you are using a real keyboard and a mouse!
