every time i try the game again it baffles me. been doing simple mode tournament. most things are fairly predictable now. fight a spike in stage 3, powerful character, expect his shots to be like the others. nope. he returns regular shots 4x fucking faster than anybody else I played. I don't understand. is there some kind of secret to returning shots at a fast speed? whenever I play power characters their returns are slow as shit, charged up or not. and here's this guy hitting things with no charge at all going 10000 miles an hour. I can't even

In case anyone is wondering, Bowser Jr. currently takes up 45 slots of the top 100 world rankings. ._.
Trying him for the first time now, I have only just started and am <1500 score atm and I reckon I've played him like 3 times. I guess newbies like myself haven't gotten the memo yet.

Anyway so yeah I'm trying him for the first time now since I haven't played him so much and I keep hearing about him and just got to my first tournament final. I guess he does make a big difference because the only other time I've made it past the 3rd round was with Chain Chomp. Hopefully there's balance patches when they introduce the new characters in the coming months' tournaments

I could swear that this is actually the case. I think that flats will generally always be more centered than topspins. That's certainly true for Adventure Mode, at least.

Mario's a different archetype so that's why the difference is more notable I'd assume.

It just feels Peach is a little undertoned in this sense, topsins should be more effective for a technical character, right now even a charge flat can be more useful to make the enemy run the court because it's a faster shot with almost the same accuracy as a charge topspin which feels way too slow sometimes.

A power shot topsin is actually worthless with Peach.

Got a tournament win with DK! Against an amazing Daisy. I think DK is a lot better than people give him credit for. His reach can be really deceptive when he's close to the net. And his topspin is just mean.

Two things about this gaeme that bother me as a casual tennis player.

The risk/reward of rushing the net is nonexistant here
A lot of the top players spend most of their time dead center of the court. Thats the one spot in tennis that you're taught NOT to stand on lol

Oh and a third, havent noticed a difference on clay vs grass vs concrete. Was hoping for clear gameplay tactics based on surface.

Assuming I didn't misread what you were trying to say:
You sure about the net thing though? Maybe they/you are good at being close to the net, 'cuase everytime I try it I get fucked pretty easily.
Of course I'm pretty bad, but still a little more skill is needed to be right in front and the reward is that you counter dropshots with ease and put pressure on the defender by playing aggressively.

Raging is right, there's very little risk to rushing the net when a perfectly timed (or even mistimed) trick shot can deny the whole point of trying to punish an overextending rival.

Also, more often than not trying a lob punish will end with the opponent getting a sweet volley chance.

Charging up a shot while standing on a star returns a shot at high speed.

Does this problem exist in Simple mode too?

A lot of the videos I've watched of supposedly great players all stand around the service box which in tennis is referred to as no man's land. You rarely ever see volley rallies in actual tennis.

There's actually a decent differentiation between surfaces though. Only clay you have way more time to charge up your shot after the ball bounces, makes a big difference. Grass is much faster and skids on and hard court is in between.

So I use a-b and b-a for drop shots and lobs and I kind of hate how it will sometimes activate a trick shot instead of doing a lob. I've lost a lot of points because of this. It's quite frustrating.

Is anyone else trying to get by doing this method of control for these shots? Maybe I should switch.

I thought the whole point of using A->B/B->A is to not accidentally trick shot...? Are you accidentally hitting the right stick or something?

Video Games
download warnings are inflated to be safe in a lot of cases, not just this game

EDIT: to flesh that out, there's download and then install data. once the game is installed, the download data is deleted

same thing happens with PS3/4 and most PC games
I know. But you're downloading nothing but those 96MB. I looked at the progress bar while it downloaded and I'm definitely not downloading 2GB or anything close to that in 1-2 minutes in my connection^^

The 2GB warning is simply nonsensical since it specifically mentions it's for the initial download that adds tournaments and two languages.

Got to a final last night with Wario, played some epic matches on my way there that makes this game incredible.

Faced a Yoshi player who would just drop shot, cross court, then star shot all in the space of a few seconds, they were totally unplayable and I didn't score a single point

How does the A-B to get dropshots thing works?
I'm stuck using X and getting unwanted trickshots all the time.

So far I've settled on playing as Spike. I like Chain Chomp as well, but his body is so big I mess up my block timing when using him.

I'm absolutely shocked at how bad I am at this game. Granted, I've never played any Mario Tennis game but I'm getting demolished online. I'm hopeless!

Starting to see a lot more Wario's. He obviously has the benefits of being a power character but his trick shot has insane reach.

Dude there's a whole bunch of us out there, don't worry you're not alone in this :D

I really wish they'd implement some proper matchmaking, cause as it is right now I'll never win more than the odd game.

Man I caved in and finally bought this last night and I suck. No matter who I play as I can barely keep up with people online and am always holding R to catch up with their shots, I never save any energy yet everyone else is always saving it for a full meter to finish me off...I'm like 1 win 15 losses lmao

The blocking shot mechanic in this game is way too unforgiving, you literally have to time it exactly perfect to get a block(which is hit or miss even with slowing down time). It's more of an exercise in frustration than anything resembling fun.

My wife has not played video games on her own for over 15 years. Until this week. I've been doing work at home and she's taken those opportunities to work on her tennis game. :D

We're really enjoying playing this together. Much less stressful than playing online!

Good players (not me) can execute it consistently. I personally appreciate how they've made it difficult to pull off

It will come with time, I used to miss it all the time, now it's non-trivial.
You probably know to watch for the ball's aura and need to be in it to block it perfectly. They could of added like a color wheel to make it a little more engaging (purple beats red beats blue etc.) because at high level it seems like everyone returns them.

What's messed up is returning those star shots with a trick shot. I have no idea how to aim or time it since trick shotting will auto aim you to the right place anyway and i'll be dinged with a "Too Early" return

You don't have to time the trick shot itself, after you fly to the ball with the Trick Shot you have to press A before your character hits the ball. The Timing is hard to explain though, that takes a little bit of trial and error. But the Message to early isn't about the Button A you have to press, so you can be too late with Pressing the Button A and it would still say Too Early.

To practice it I went into Free Play Mode against the CPU on Ace difficulty, choose Bowser Jr as my oponent and gave him as many Star Points as Possible with weak returns (at that difficulty the CPU takes most of them if the have meter). You can Return a Super Shot like that too by the way.

I can't believe this was my most anticipated game of the summer. What the heck was Camelot doing all this time? Completely unbalanced gameplay and characters, you can't play more than one set, Swing mode sucks, total lack of content, cut corners regarding budget (from the lack of trophy presentations to using the same character artwork on Marina Stadium's screens as Ultra Smash), and just little to make this worth $60 at the moment. I am so disappointed.

I'm just hoping we are getting more than updates/additions than just 3 characters from playing the tournaments lol

can't believe an MP game without unlocks/customization nowadays
