Just found out that Ys VIII PS4 is sold out in every single retailer I've found that'd ship to my country. Luckily, I found the very last copy available here. Watching the Ys VIII Switch reviews stressing the framerate got me picking up the PS4 version sooner rather than later.

I just started this a couple of days ago and so far I'm really enjoying it. I then come in here and everyone is complaining about a terrible localization. Damn must have been rough at launch cause I'm not really seeing any huge issues.

i'm about two hours into the switch version. i didn't play the ps4 version so my only other comparison is the vita version, which i played in 2016 for a couple hours after a friend lent it to me (and got further than i am right now despite not understanding japanese). prior to that i've only played memories of celceta (to completion).

i immediately put adol in his classic armor and gave laxia glasses. and i made sahad dress up in his desert island outfit. right now i'm done with chapter 1 and the game is still slowly getting started. i really like how this and memories of celceta remind me of ps2-era style games. it just feels so straightforward and i think it might be the simpler character models and focus on exploration that specifically reminds me of games like skies of arcadia and dragon quest viii. voice acting's nice, combat feels good, and the music's pretty good too. i don't really notice things like resolution drops (people said xb2 hit 360p sometimes but i could never tell when i was playing in handheld mode). the only graphical stuff that looks constantly weird are the shadows coming off of objects.

in another thread i realized that i'm getting about eight rpgs for switch this year, and this is the first one.... but it will probably be the biggest. i think only tales of vespera definitive edition (and i've never played vesperia) or valkyria chronicles 4 have a chance to rival it.

i'm a little over 3 hours in now and completed the first raid. this reminds me a little of xb2 in how it kept teaching the player things except it's not quite as drawn out. i'm expecting that this is the part where the game will begin to open up a lot more.

i'm also a sucker for 'building village' things so... i'm probably going to get close to 100% on that at least if the story doesn't grab me at the end like xb2 did (where i stopped doing sidequests because the main game was holding my interest more).

idk how easy it is on the other settings but getting S ranks was super hard early on for the defense stuff. I recommend coming back to ones you did before later to S rank them for the rewards

i am playing the game on normal... and i got an 'a' ranking for adol and an 's' for dogi. i missed the part about how dogi's crew could help out - it seemed like it was passive? if there was something that i could do to activate it, i would have done a lot better.

It's just passive, you just gotta do really good yourself *not get hit, juggle dudes in the air, kill super fast*

So the English dub is fine. The changing of common proper western spellings (but keeping the common phonetics) is a little grating. Greeshun in particular was eye rolling.

Being a little hard on the game having just started NG+ in XC2. I have immense nostalgia and fondness for the series. Do these stupid spellings get patched?

Edit - also would be awesome if a mod could move this out of hangouts for us Switch players. Had to search on it.

Still few days to wait for EU ! I stopped my playthrough on PC to keep some surprises, I'll buy it on Switch finally.

i think those are more explicitly editor's choice - like katthew and kathleen.

Can we get a mod to temporarily move this thread out of Hangouts? Jonneh ? The game was just released on Switch. People are asking for general gameplay help in the patch thread because they don't know this thread exists.

Thanks Jonneh!

I hope Switch owners don't sleep on this game. Launch issues aside (which will hopefully be fixed), the core game really is fantastic. Based on my experience playing the PS4 version, this game easily stands in the top 2 JRPGs on Switch (alongside Xenoblade 2). And I'm not seeing any games on the horizon likely to challenge that, aside from Octopath Traveler which could round out a nice top 3.

The reasons I like this game are pretty much the same reasons I like Xenoblade 2. It has a great balance of exploration gameplay vs following the central storyline. Although this game's story isn't as cinematic and dramatic and Xenoblade 2's, it's really good in its own way. What I love most about it is the sense of mystery and adventure. You're marooned on a deserted island with a bunch of strangers, and I was so invested in exploring the island's secrets and meeting the other castaways.

I could go on and on praising this game. The battle system is really fun, the music is great, and so on. Such a shame that NISA didn't treat this game as well as it deserved, I really hope people still give it a chance.

I held off on the PS4 version so that I could play the Switch version (in bed!). So far I'm absolutely loving this game. I'm about 6 hours in and I cannot get enough!

My biggest (and really only so far) complaint is the performance on the Switch. The framerate js smooth for the most part, with some random hiccups here and there. But man oh man, that resolution is such an eye sore unfortunately. Both in handheld mode and docked I feel like theres so much dithering and artifacting across the screen especially in the grassy areas (and theres a whole a lot of those areas in this game). Technically, XB2 ran worse than this on handheld mode, but i was personally able to tolerate that game's performance more because at least the environments and characters/monster models were higher poly and more pleasing to look at. Sometimes in this game it's legit Ps2 levels. The game was never a looker on the ps4 to begin with, but I'm definitely disappointed at the difference between that version and the Switch version.

With that said though, I got over it real quick cause I'm loving the hell out of this game. Time to dive back.

Eh, I caved and bought the game when I noticed that the PS4 version is actually kind of hard to come by with it's extras without paying full price. Played an hour of it and I already know I am going to love it.
Does this game look a bad as XB2 in handheld mode?
To me the game looks and runs significantly better on handheld mode. This is just from the playing the first hour or so but when I play it on my TV my eyes hurt which is the first time that has ever happened to me.

Edit: I also want to mention that I played and beat most of my switch games on my TV so for me to prefer handheld mode is quite rare.

Bought this on Switch... I'm two and a half way through and I'm loving it.

Wish I had Xenoblade 2 for the sake of comparison but I can easily compare the graphic style with the first one on Wii. Although, combat is really interesting. My only and main big issue are the big anime clichés...

That Laxia scene, I mean.. Why do anime girls try to bath on the first puddle they find. That was weird.

I need to finish my work so I can keep playing.

EDIT: First time using spoilers, sorry.

Yay, I got my copy ! I really love the art on the alt cover. Sorry for the quality, my phone is not really good with indoor lights. Also I like the map and cards, I'm nostalgic about old things like non-digital manuals.

Managed to get the game for $20 at Gamestop because of an error lol. They printed weekly ads and had the Switch game on the cover for $40 off. If you have the ad they'll honor it apparently

I am having a hell of a time deciding if I want to get this on Switch or just pick up the PS4 version. I know I would have more time for the switch version, but knowing how much better the PS4 version performs has me hesitant.

Should I pick this game up? Itching for another great rpg and I loved xeno. What I liked the most was the story and game play and the combat

Worth it on switch? How long is it?

Thanks for bringing this out of purgatory. Couldn't believe there wasn't more talk.

For people who played it on Vita and now Switch, is it worth it? I've got a few hours in the Vita version, but decided I'd probably rather have the updated/revised version on PS4 but passed on it. I figured maybe the PC version and then they announced the Switch and that's my primary console now, so...

The performance bugs me and I'm okay waiting for the patches, but maybe I'm better sticking with the Vita version.

The story is at least better than Seven or pretty much every Ys game. There's generally a good pace between story and just being able to explore the island.

Just finished Hollow Knight (great game) and now time to start Ys VIII. Heard good things so can't wait to sink my teeth into it.

Switch is my primary console and I am enjoying Ys VIII on it so far. First time for me with this series. Seen some Vita videos and this appears noticeably better. Performance is fine, although I'm sure improvement patches will continue. Seems 30fps, a little grass shimmering in handheld but otherwise mostly like the PS4 version. Playing this game a lot outside/away from home so the portability has been very nice.

If I love YS 6, O, and F but absolutely HATE 7, will I enjoy this game?

As someone who also likes Felghana and Origin but didn't care much for 7 at all, I'd say probably not.

Granted, I'm only about 3 hours into 8, but so far it seems to have retained every single design decision I've disliked about 7.

The heavy focus on story and cutscenes. The overpowered consumable items. The pointless RPG systems like crafting. The skill system. The 3 member parties. All of that is still in Ys 8 and all of these things still drag the game down.

Worst of all, the combat system is still heavily based on dodges and parries, which means the only thing that really matters in combat is how well you can time those.

The windows for a successful dodge/parry are shorter this time around, and parrying in particular isn't as broken as it was in 7, but that doesn't fix the core issue of every single boss fight coming down to one single thing: how good your timing is. After all, if you can beat every single attack by just doging/parrying, why bother doing anything else. Especially since a successful dodge also buffs your attack speed.

Maybe it gets better later on, but so far my initial impressions are pretty negative, particularly for something that's supposed to be by far the best Ys game according to some fans. And Origin and Felghana didn't need 5+ hours to get good.

If you are complaining about healing items just dont use them, I cleared inferno as my first playthrough 0 restoration or status removal items used. 3 hours hasnt even scratched it

It's the best game in the series on inferno easily for me

8 > origin = 2 > 7 > Oath > MoC > 1 > 6 *based on max difficulty playthroughs

For what it's worth, I couldn't even finish 7 but think 8 could reasonably be considered the best game in the series.
