Green/Blue is a smarmy asshole who makes a point of belittling you whenever he can. He's not an outright villain like Silver is but he's definitely one of the story's main antagonists.
The problem comes from the fact that by the time you faced him for the...4th time, his shtick gets old. Oh no, you are an asshole who can't actually back up you words. Boo hoo. At least other rivals are more fun to talk to afterwards.

I think the only rival in the series worth calling "antagonistic" in the series was Silver.

Silver is another rival that I feel suffers towards the end as they showed his character development post game but the problem it just feels kinda half baked.

The remake fixes it a bit.

my problem with antagonistic rivals is they dont solve the actual problem of rivals being fun to beat. it ties with the inherent problem of the games being too easy. solve that first, game freak

Hau can be pretty tough to defeat if your team is not well equip to deal with Alolan Raichu, though you do have a point as Barry was the last Rival that had a full team that grew along side yours. The rivals after him only had a team of 4.

I think the way to fix that is just have it that player is forced to lose a battle and the game carries on as normal, with the rival gloating over the player.

Let us fight a trainer like Paul in the Pokémon animé who thinks that his training methods is the correct way.

The rival thing is a particularly sore spot for me. So tired of the rivals in Pokemon games vomiting rainbows when they talk. It was cool in Gen 3. I was into it then because it was new. But it feels like it's been a while since we've had someone who really feels like an actual 'rival.' Hearing that the Let's Go games repeated this was a huge turn off for me. Still going to check them out but man... I wish Game Freak would be a little tougher around the edges every now and then. Not a lot! Just a little bit.

Please don't. Mean rivals are insufferable, moreso if they aren't able to beat you

There's already lots of that shit with the evil team, give me someone who doesn't want to chew me up and enjoys the trip as much as i do

Also, friendly rival music is always the best

are their eyes modeled with layers rather than being a single texture or am I imagining that? When Pikachu looks around it seems like that.

Haha holy shit, Nintendo won: my GF saw the trailer and now she wants to sell her PS4 to get a switch and Let's Go Eevee!

Which is great since I wanted LG Pikachu either way. I didn't follow all the information dump after the trailer reveal, could someone explain or point me towards an article explaining if / how I'll be able to interact with my GF if we both have a switch with the game?

Can we join each other in our adventure with our own teams for the coop gameplay ?
Can we trade and battle against each other?
How does the online work?
etc.

Thanks :)

EDIT: I'm dumb, should have read the OP after E3.
So no co-op with 2 Switches and no online / wireless battles, huh ? That sucks :(

Depends on the game, I like your friends in BW with each one having a varied personality, but in XY they were insufferable. Didn't care for any of them, and I only felt miserable beating Calem in each encounter. I felt I was the bully in the relationship pushing him down, and destroying any hope he had of being a trainer.

1- Co-op is only on the same Switch
2- You share the same team
2- Trading and battle online and wirelessly (local) works as in every other core Pokémon game, with 2 Switches and 2 games.

Here's a random thing I hope makes it into these games from yellow: the in-game trade for the Machoke that then promptly evolves.

What if the tutorial-heavy gameplay isn't for younger gamers, but for older players who are new to Pokemon/handheld games.

No, those are still textured eyes. Changing them to models, while would make them better, would have some consequences as they'd be out of sync with every other pokemon

I mean I disagree with everything you've said, but you'll surely keep getting your friendly rivals so you'll be the one winning in the end lol. Which I'm happy that you'll enjoy so whatever, no worries. I would honestly give up having an evil team just to have a cool rival instead who you compete against on your journey to be the best there ever was. I'd be more interested in that as the story if it was done really well and with significant character development throughout the journey. The evil teams are just getting more and more over the top in terms of how they're achieving their objectives that I'm just over it. The multidimensional/ultra beast type stuff is simply not for me. I always try really hard to get into it, but it's always my least favorite part of the games.

Mean rivals who stay mean even after they lose all there battles is just bad writing. They'd have no teeth and beating them would just feel hollow. No "feels good to beat the asshole" feeling when it's mandatory they lose all the time (and are weaksauce easy to boot).

As for villain teams, Lusamine was the best villain since Giovanni. I liked the Aether Foundation, but GF really needed to flesh out the other characters. Faba wasn't used enough and Wicke was...there. And Team Skull was great too. Loved the writing for them. The grunts felt pathetic, in a good way. Gave them more character than grunts have every really had in the past.

So keep the same writing team. GF may have struck gold with them

Yeah. The only mean rival I actually enjoyed was Silver because he goes through his own arc. He starts off super mean, but as you keep beating him he starts to change his ideology, which helps flesh him out as a person.

So as mentioned in another thread, Let's Go Pikachu / Eevee are getting some kind of special presentation in France's Japan Expo from July 5th to 9th. Though they won't be playable.

While I'm sorta doubtful they would do this, there are 3 things I really want to see in this presentation!

1: Most of all, I want to see if Abilities and Items are in or out. I'm actually pretty neutral about their fate since we're getting gen 8 next year anyways, but I just want this settled asap so I can practice competitive Let's Go on USUM and Showdown!

2: I want to see Eevee's summary. When we saw Pikachu's via it leveling up on the Treehouse stream, that's when we learned that the starter Pikachu has massively buffed stats, so I'm hoping we can learn what Eevee gets soon too!

3: I wanna see what that new Pokemon is. I doubt we'll learn how competitively viable it is at reveal, but I do find speculating based off its typing to be fun!

Going by the date they might be getting a scoop on the monthly update for the games at the expo.

Speaking of monthly updates, I wonder what they can show for these games the coming months to keep hype up a bit.

The new Pokemon is a new evolution of Eevee called Casualeon.

It's super effective and resistant to all types and you get it handed to you after picking up Eevee or Pikachu.

It comes at level 100 and only knows the moves Attack and Block.

Is that simple enough or does it need to be dumbed down further?

Woah dude your implying the casual player actually knows how to select moves.

You'll need to make Attack and Block one move so it does both on the same turn as not to confuse the player.

Being forced to bring a grass or water type is dumb when they already gave Pikachu and Eevee Double Kick.

There's a bit of logic there as double kick is a physical attack and rock type tend to have high defense so it won't do much damage than say either Grass or Water type attack, especially when Brock's Pokémon has a 4x weakness due to their duel typing.

Is that simple enough or does it need to be dumbed down further?

Too complex we need to make it even simple, let's have that when the player buy the game and open the box they get a sheet of paper saying "congrats you won the game."

It would ignore you.....

That mechanic only applies to Pokémon that have different trainer ID than yours.

I have preordered both + pokeball but I've never played pokemon before. Since it appears to have multiplayer I need two copies as I'll play it with my daughter (she has her own switch).

I can play with her even if we have different versions since it's the same base game correct?

The co-op stuff is actually single console only. It's trading and battling locally that requires two consoles.

Friendly rivals are bad in a different way though. They are almost kind of sad, like they appear just to let you beat them down and they are just happy about it.

I think that the bigger issue is that they don't handle the encounter placements good for the rivals anymore. Its always where its very likely you will be prepared to make them eat dirt. I remember in the earlier games, it wasn't so much about the rivals themselves but where they were placed for encounters. They would be placed in optional side areas or in the middle of "dungeons". Now, not only do they appear like right when you start on a new route (most likely fully healed )they also heal you. I'm fine with them being friendly, but how about in cooler ways? Maybe offering you a rare Pokemon, some Pokeballs or something, not just test dummies.

Where are they moving Safari Zone exclusive Pokemon now that the Go transfer Park took its place?

Joking but slightly serious answer: Random NPC's will just straight up give them to you.

Serious answer: If starter pokemon are now catchable in the wild, I would think Safari Zone pokemon will just be made catchable in the wild as well.

Personally I don't mind friendly rivals, if they are done well but the problem is that for the last two generation they have been poorly written with X and Y opting for quantity over quality with the two males being boring and pointless, Serena could have been interesting in trying to live up to her parents' achievements but the game doesn't go down that route. Hau in gen 7 was far too happy-go-lucky and laid back even during the serious moment that I just wanted to smack him stupid and tell him to go home when Gladeon and I went to save Lillie.

Barry in gen 4 was better in that department as he would rush into thinks without thinking and he realised the error of his way when he failed to save Uxie, so he did some training help the player at Mt. Coronet but knew when to bail out when he had hit the wall so he wouldn't hold the player back. Barry is also the last rival to have 6 Pokémon on his team during the course of the adventure that would grow along side yours. Though Hau in Ultra Sun and Moon is a return to form, though he's a fucking cheater as he has a level 44 Noivern when that isn't possible.

Where are they moving Safari Zone exclusive Pokemon now that the Go transfer Park took its place?

My guess is that they are either moving them into the wild or worse case option making them exclusive to Pokémon Go and have to be transferred in.

Tauros and Kangaskhan are exclusive to North America and Australia respectively. They're not going to make Go the only way to get those. They'll just put them somewhere else.

Just a note, self promotion isn't allowed here.

Also it's proper to link to the initial source ;)

This seems to confirm that Pikachu model leak, now, doesn't it? May be late on this one but that seems like the same perspective. (And yes, it's using both the male and female skins.)

I dunno, if they were daft enough to make those Pokémon region exclusive in the first and daft enough to block post gen 1 then they are daft enough to make those Pokémon exclusive to Go.

Don't forget they were daft enough to not make Tangela catchable in the wild in Diamond and Pearl, despite the fact that the Pokémon had a new evolution and the Pokémon had to be transferred over from the gen 3 game.

Region exclusive and Gen 1 are both fine decisions. Much like Butterfree is now a Pokemon you can catch in the wild, I'm sure the encounters aren't going to be exactly the same throughout the game.

Pokemon customization is something I'm really hoping transitions to Gen 8 more than anything. Would make watching VGC much more funner if you can bling your Pokemon out with clothes, lol.

It's only for the partners not every Pokemon. Doing so would be a crazy intensive undertaking, although it would be cool if hold items were visible, although that would probably remove some of the strategy (or add to it!)
