Beat the game yesterday, 107% in 38 hours. Only things I didn't do (and plan on doing eventually) were the Path of Pain and the Mr Mushroom stuff :P even finished the Hunter's Journal.

Tried my hand at PoP but it kicked my ass so I decided to just go straight to the final boss's lol

What a masterpiece of a game. I absolutely adored every second of it, and it raises the bar on Metroidvania design in every sense. Can't wait for the Gods and Kings DLC and whatever may come after that (specially that Hornet campaign).

2 quick questions:
just collected 2 masks out of the 3, how much of the game is left, and is there a way to check my completion percentage?

Not a spoiler but just in case
If you just want to finish the game, then you're very close to the end. But it could be you've only seen 40% of the game... This game is huge and a lot of the content is optional. Your completion percentage gets unlocked just before you finish the game. Then you can check it anytime, for when you want to go for 100% after you finish the game.

edit: beaten

Once you collected the third mask, you can go to the end boss. Just before the end boss there is a bench which enables you to see your percentage completion. You can just exit the Black Egg Temple and continue playing. If you finish the end boss you respawn at that bench.

So you could finish the game real quick, depending on how much you have explored.

That's good to hear. Cheers.

So... How about Lost Kin, eh?

I almost threw my Switch across the room last night. I gave up because I had to go to bed. I think I'm going to get the fuck out of that area and come back to it later when I've got more combat related (or health) upgrades.

I'm currently stuck on his rematch. I've run around and found a couple more things so I can give it another go tonight. At least you don't lose your shade when you die.

Got to Stagnest after Queen's Garden, talked to Stag and saw the broken egg.

Have to say I almost shed a tear there. Hoping for a DLC with the baby Stag.

It's virtually impossible for me to not give this game a 10/10, even if they screw up the ending really bad, which I don't believe they did.

I'm trying to clean up everything before the battle against THK (got beaten pretty bad the first time).

Some tips? (for exploration purposes, places to visit etc.)

keep the rematch bosses for the very end imo, there's really no reward for doing them soon. do it at least after you've got all nail upgrades

For this I pretty much did a brute force tactic. Stayed up on him really close with quick slash and beat the shit out of him, tough fight but I whooped his ass finally.

Made a lot of progress yesterday. This game gets better the more you play. And I'm so glad I stopped after about 10 hours into the PC Version back on launch to wait for Switch. It plays fantastic in handheld mode.

I have just started playing it and I was wondering if I should focus on getting the various map upgrades as soon as possible or if I should save for something else.

That's what I'm stuck on. I beat him the first time around, but the rematch in that other plane is driving me up a wall.

I actually did that once and was like, "Oh my god, I'M WINNING!" and then the next breath, I got killed when trying to avoid him and multiple floating orange thingies.

Hollow Knight is such a good game. Everyone should check it out, the more systems, the more eyes on it, the better.

Just picked this up on Switch due to all the positive talk and I'm really enjoying it so far, only an hour or so in.

I haven't watched a ton of media on this before hand other than the OT, but does this game get more colorful? I get what they're going for early on, I'm just hoping it's more visually diverse further in.

it never gets kirby-colorful, but some of the later areas are more vibrant compared to the beginning.

Yeah, a lot. The first area is supposed to look kinda dead. Second area is very colorful.

YES! People, don't be fooled by the blue tone of the first exploring areas. Game is visually diverse as you go in

I was just at that point, only bought it the other night, and I immediately invested in any map related items. At first I thought this game didn't have a map at all and I was feeling the bile rise and then phew...

Combine the charms Spore shroom and Defender's crest. Their combined effects nullify the ghosts in that fight.

Get the compass and especially the quill asap. The rest isn't as important for now.
Already got the quill, will work on the compass next!
also as a general rule, since you're gonna want to buy everything anyway, don't horde money and buy stuff as soon as you're able to. you can always mess up and lose money.
Yup, luckily it's pretty easy to get back to the shop.

Without a map it would be pretty annoying for sure, if only to keep track of which direction you have or haven't been to.

My only complaint from this game is that there is no way to know where the breakable walls are. If there was a "scanning" charm or something a-la Metroid Prime, to show you where to look it would have been much better in my opinion since the maps that you buy don't really help in this regard. Some of these walls need to be found in order to discover bosses and I had to resort to the internet to discover some of them after 25 hours of game time. I love exploring the world that this game has to offer but I don't want to hit walls from room to room just to see if they are breakable.

Apart from that, this is easily one of the best 2D Metroidvanias of all time and by far the best game I played on the Switch this year. A masterful, beautiful game that deserves all the praise it gets. At its price, there is no excuse for not picking this up.

I would imagine the price point really helped move copies beyond what a more expensive product would've made them, no? Seems like a really smart move to me, not that I have receipts for that or anything.

I wasn't even sure about it due to the art and I bit easy as fuck because of the price point.

Took me 37 hours to beat with 67% completed.

Normally I complete games pretty quick, but judging by everyone else here, I was super slow. Strange as I never felt like I was stuck for any long periods of time.

Just picked it up.
Should I play handheld or big screen?

I played mostly handheld, even on my couch, looks really great on the small screen and fits with the vibe of it being a small insect world.

absolutely, the price must have made it an easy purchase for many. i actually misremembered and thought i had paid 20 for it on steam and was expecting it to hit eshop with some switch tax at 25$. when most of the big indie platformers are at the 20-25 price point, they really set themselves apart with their price, and the surprise of everyone realizing there's enough content in there to justify a much higher price creates a lot of positive word of mouth

i'm very surprised at most people's completion times as well. i'm at 103% with 60 hours, but reading that people have it fully done (107%) with 30-40 hours makes me think there was something wrong with the way i played. but i never got stuck anywhere or on any boss for long, and looked up a lot of stuff from guides.

I think the way the map works might be biting me in the butt in the (middle? late?) game:

- I've found 2/3 "dreamers", the one in the deepnest and the one at the top of the city
- when I look at where the 3rd is, and based on the maps where the gaps would be for possible routes, they are all blocked by different hazards:
- black barrier
- green acid
- a one-way barrier
- So after poking around for a while on the map I believe I've ruled out any part of the map that has a gap as having the upgrades I need, so that would have to mean then that they are hidden somewhere in rooms I've already visited. That being the case, the only thing I can do is run back through the areas to see if there is anything I missed first time through, due to not having a doublejump or where ever.

Having a blast with this. Picked it up and managed to make a decent amount of progress.

The only complaint that I have so far is that the Switch d-pad and analog stick make nail-bouncing really annoying for me. Bouncing on the worm through the room with spikes in Deepnest took me like 7 tries :/

Let me ask you a question: how deep have you been? I assume you've finished Kingdom's Edge, right?

All of the breakable walls have visual cues, usually very pronounced cracks.

No actually.

I don't have the game in front of me but just glancing at where that is in relation to other things, when I've poked around in that direction with the things that connect to it I've found dead ends and trolleys that I haven't figured out how to work yet.
But that helps, I'll head that way again tonight. I'm curious why I haven't seen an open path headed that way now.

I had a similar issue although that was more of a complaint with the actual Switch hardware than the game. This is the first game on the Switch I really missed having a solid Dpad for some of the pogo nail bouncing sections.

Analog stick can get you through everything, just takes a little practice.

All of the breakable walls have visual cues, usually very pronounced cracks.

But you have to be looking for them constantly to notice them which necessarily shifts the attention to that particular aspect of the game only since they're not as obvious as cracked floors but much more subtle in my opinion. If it was just to find an item I would have been fine with it, but some of these walls are hiding very important things and bosses, so I would have liked a bit more help from the game rather than the internet.

The map (after being bought) could have included the hidden passages as well in my opinion and that would have made things simpler. In that way you would only have to look for the hidden passages in a very specific area instead of looking throughout the map. Or, like a mentioned above, a "scanning" charm that would glow or something when coming close to a hidden passage.

I'm willing to bet that there is a large number of people that are going to miss out a lot of great things that this game has to offer only because they are very well hidden and that is a great shame.

P.s. I repeat that this is my only -minor- complaint from a game that I consider to be near perfect in one of my favourite genres.

Hmm I never really had issues with that in my playthrough. Early on you learn that breakable walls exist, so to me that basically said "okay either look at or try hitting every wall you can just in case" and that served me pretty well throughout the game. The only wall I had trouble finding on my own was the one that led to the Hive, but seeing the Hive interior from another screen was a kind of signpost that said "hey, there's something hidden here, start looking for it".

I guess a "secrets" marker after you've beaten the game or gotten a certain completion % would be useful though, yeah.

How does this game compare to say, an Axiom Verge...which I could also afford?

If I like this game, will I like Axiom Verge?
Hollow Knight utterly destroys Axiom Verge, which also is a good game.

Yeah I've mostly been using the analog stick for everything. I just tried the d-pad there to see if it would work better (noooooope). I eventually got it, I just had to stop being so spastic with my analog movements.

Any tips on how to beat the large fat bug blocking the path in deep nest? He's wearing a white mask. I can't get any hits on him.

I'm the last person who should be giving anyone strategy tips, but I did find it you get close enough or take a swing at it, it'll retaliate and drop its guard. You can get a shot in, but the window is very small. You could whittle its health away by doing that.

I've just managed to do it by charging the slash move (forget it's name), hitting him the split second he opens his mask, and quickly dashing away.

To folks who have finished the game, what's the deal with...

The "Warrior Dreams." Are they optional bosses? Or is defeating them connected to finishing the main game? I've found two on the map, and both have thoroughly kicked my teeth in.
