There will be further adjustments to game balance in matches and character performance.

I haaaate when Nintendo patch notes do this. This doesn't make me very confident in anything meaningful actually having been done to Bowser Jr. but I guess we'll see. We'll have to wait for dataminers to know the specifics. So dumb.

At least the patch might fix the Gyro on/off bug for online tournaments.

So in online play,

What's the difference between free play 1 player solo or team

And

2 player solo or team?

Also, my friend and I cant join up online and play doubles against others right? :(

From my understanding:

Free play 1 player solo = just you searching for randoms for Quick Play matches (so tiebreakers) in either singles or doubles

Free play 1 player team = Creating a private lobby for friends to play whether singles or doubles

Free play 2 player solo = Search for random doubles matches with a local friend (so two players on one switch)

Free play 2 player team = Creating a private lobby for friends but one of them is a local player on your Switch (so again, two players on one Switch)

In summary, you can only play online doubles with an online friend in the private lobbies with other online friends. You cannot do it with randoms.

I apologize if anyone just played against me while I was Bowser Jr. I've played at least a little with the other characters and a lot with some. Farthest I've gotten in simple was semifinals. This is my first time trying BJ and fucking hell is this character broken.

I literally just played with my opponents like they were toys. Half the time I didn't even double tap or did dumb shit like rushing the net at serve(side note: the ball has to bounce before you can hit it I learned.) Still won the tournament.

My opponents weren't bad players either. Some were other Bowser Jrs. That was probably the only challenge I faced. He either needs some changes or needs to be offline modes only just for funsies. Seriously.

Edit: it was 1 boo, 2 waluigis, 1 Bowser Jr, and a Daisy that I went through like butter. Wtf

OK, I'm nearly done with my quest to win a tournament with every character in Simple mode (just need to do Peach, Bowser, Waluigi, and Bowser Jr.). This is actually much harder than Standard mode because you can't use trick shots as a crutch to mitigate the flaws of some characters.

Anyways, I thought Wario was the worst character in Simple mode, but I was wrong. It is actually...

*drumbeat*

Rosalina. She basically has all the flaws of Wario (below average range, bad control, slow speed, a terrible lunge) without any of his power. Her slices are so weak in comparison to Boo's that it is not nearly enough to make up for it. Like, it's literally impossible to get the ball past characters like Chain Chomp and Bowser Jr. no matter what you do. She can't even take advantage of putting her opponents in bad positions because she has no power or control to knock the ball past them before they can recover.

Boo is better than her in every possible way besides range. Similar power and speed, better control (especially with drop shots), far better slices, and hands down the best lunge in Simple mode (to the point where I think it's actually glitched; you can literally chain lunges to each other to go across the entire court and catch balls that no other character could possibly reach).

At least with Wario if I was going to lose it would be quick. Since Rosalina is so slow on everything her rallies can take minutes at a time. I'm so glad to never have to pick her up again.
how can someone be so wrong?

Thanks. You can play againt coms in doubles in team at least.

The names are definitely confusing and I think the descriptions are messed up. It's not clear at all that solo is not private and team is private.

Description for one player team says pairs of players but you can have 4?

Also, i never see my friends listed in invite despite them being online.

i did infact she is my main, the idea she is the worst character is laughable, and btw other than the slice, she is better than boo in every way,

Her drop shot and lunge are totally inferior. Boo can actually aim his drop shot to the side (while Rosalina's goes mostly straight) and Boo's lunge is by far the best out of any character. She may have more power but that's kinda worthless since her shots are still too slow for it to matter.

I really need to know how you're getting shots past Bowser Jr., Bowser, and Chain Chomp. Even if you can lob over them she doesn't have a way to guarantee a point if they manage to return it (which they usually do because her lob is below-average) because her control and power are terrible. She can't hog the net because her range is bad and she loses a rally the moment she lunges (Boo can still recover even from close-range lunges).

The most optimal way I found to play her was to remain at mid-range and act like a wall when it came to returning balls, since she's too slow to be able to catch shots from across court. Her curved slices become a complete non-factor against any decent player, so every match became a battle of attrition. It was just completely aggravating how long each match took, in addition to all the times I lost and had to restart. Eventually I got lucky enough to go through a tournament with none of those previously mentioned problem characters showing up and I finally won.

All that said, apparently I lost more as Wario, which is why he's still my character icon on the rankings screen. I bet that'll confuse anyone who doesn't know why he's there lol.

Gamexplain asked Bill Trinen about this style of patch notes at E3. He said it was for the fun of the mystery, exploration, and discovery of datamining it.

I want to know why they wouldn't just come out and say it's confusing for casuals, but given that it's Nintendo they may be crazy enough to believe the core gamers like this stuff.

I feel like a total chump. I bought this game thinking it would be fun and I just get bopped by literally everyone lol. If only I could go back and time and stop myself from buying this game.

Downloading the update now. Will be really interesting to see if there's any character changes. Can't tell if those patch notes mean for this update or a future one.

Edit : K it could just be placebo, but I just played a Waluigi and he seemed to gain way less meter than before. Maybe it was just a bad Waluigi, but he beat me and I'm alright. He never had much more than half a meter. I built a good amount more meter than him total as DK.

What's even the point of releasing those patch notes when it doesn't have the information everybody actually wants.

They seem to have turned on some sort of matchmaking tonight.

I wish we had actual detailed patch notes on this stuff.

Has anyone tested out Bowser Jr. to see if he has been nerfed in any way?

If the balance changes mean for next patch, then it's basically nothing at the moment since the new ranked doesn't start until sunday. Just rebalancing early adventure mode, and fix a couple bugs.

"Further" implies that there have already been some adjustments, right? Unless they're talking about the beta or internal development.

How the hell am I supposed to complete a 300 shot rally with Boo? Shit is impossible. Can't even get close.

That's in the Mansion right? That one's pretty easy--just keep to the center and return the shots directly to Boo and don't get fancy with your shots. You want him to easily return them.

It's the similar challenge on the ship you have to watch out for...

The "Rating" feature is good to hear. Gain points if you win, lose points if you lose. It should have started at 0 rather than start at 2000. By starting at 0 you can instantly see and gauge just how good somebody is by looking at their Rating.

Did it in my first try and don't unterstand what's so difficult about it?! Simply return his shots in the most straightforward way possible and it should be easy as cake.

No quick retry option patched into Adventure Mode, I take it?

At least I've almost finished this bad boy now. This is my first Mario Tennis game, and I've found the singleplayer extremely difficult. I struggled terribly with that match against the squid fellow on the boat, for example. But, to its credit, it definitely forced me to really learn the mechanics of the game, so I can't complain. I just can't get oer the lack of a quick retry, though. Knowing that every failure means at least thirty wasted seconds of mashing and sitting through load times before I can start again saps any will I have to bang my head against some of the harder challenges. It just seems like such an obvious oversight; I can't wrap my head around it :P

He does those special star shots at me... how are you supposed to return those?

Something weird really happened. I eliminated a guy in the 3rd round and when I reached the finals he was there?

One thing I haven't paid enough attention to is backhand vs forehand shots, i mainly just try to reach the ball. Are extreme angles easier with backhands?

edit: Now with less sodium

Patch notes seem really vague. Did anything improve?

The last point seems to indicate match changes and character balancing will come in future patches rather than this one.

Is it just me or is it easier to block specials now? Played against a bowser junior last night, must have blocked his special atleast 20 times. It took 4-5 trick shots for him refill that meter to a special. So during a couple of points he had 4-5 specials. Insane.

It's just you. Well, not just you, but most people. You've gotten better at the timing as most players have. When I use special shots now, it's never with the expectation I'll get a racket break; it's usually to move an opponent or knock them back so that I score a point with my next return.

Yes, I agree, players seems to know how to block. Two rackets per match makes sense

Having vague patch notes to add to the mystery of a game of is one of the most Nintendo excuses I've ever heard.

How can rank #1 play 10x more matches than me and still have his thumb intact?

Thats insane.

So I'm loving the online (even if I'm can't get passed semi-finals).

Dumb question though: I saw a stream today and the person (who had won multiple tournaments) got directly to round 2. Does it do that if you win a tournament ?
