In SoCal my little AC like yours is my life saver. 32c is what I wish for. I can't even exist in the rest of the house on some days that are 42c. I just go into the bedroom with my laptop, close the door, and point the portable AC right at myself and my pup. Once the summer gets hot, there's just a good 2 or 3 months where I can no longer accomplish anything at home because everything sucks and I just wait for fall to do anything.

I used to live in a place where it wasn't unusual to have highs in the upper 90s daily for many weeks in a row and it'd hit those temps routinely for 4+ months reliably every year in addition to insanely high humidity. Before AC existed many elderly people died every year, and some still do if they're neglected and don't have air conditioning.

I knew someone who lived in a small apartment. A window AC unit for their bedroom or even whole apartment would have been anywhere between $100 and $300. They could easily afford that plus the electricity. They were absolutely miserable in the heat, complained constantly, and on those nights when the low was 85 degrees F they'd sneak into work to sleep in the air conditioning. They did this for years. It seemed like the most ridiculous thing to cheap out on.

Yeah August-mid October is a living hell in SoCal, if you're inland especially.

Wondering, what is your building made out of and how is the isolation? Because I personally don't have much problems due to stone and isolation.
Certainly good for you, I can understand how the heat paralyzes you even more with depression.

The vast majority British buildings are built using brick instead of wood or stone and, on top of that, insulation material is heavily used to keep the heat in. In fact a few years ago there was a government scheme to install free insulation into people's attics and roofs which, whilst great in the Winter, does not help at all in the Summer.

32c is what you guys get to in a heat wave? Oh man, thats a regular May for us. But yeah, ACs are the best.

My mom and her huskies are hating life at the moment in the UK. She'd probably kill for a good AC.

I'm living in the south of Spain and we're having unusually cool weather for this time of year. Normally, it's between 40-50C and my shutters are down all the way and the AC is on all day, but right now we're only hitting like 30C and I haven't even got a fan blowing and I'm perfectly comfy. God, I hope it stays like this.

Like everyday heat in US about 75

That's reaaaaally dependent on where you are. The high where I live was 102 yesterday.

Happy for you OP, very relatable post. The summer really exacerbates my mental health issues and not being able to sleep as well because my house doesn't have AC is a nightmare. I've been nodding off at work all morning and I came in 10 minutes late, which I never do, because I could barely get out of bed.

Nice purchase OP.

I can handle two weeks of an Australian summer perfectly fine, but it feels much hotter in the UK right now because of the humidity.

Fucking hate it.

I've been considering getting a couple of wall-mounted units upstairs. Our bedroom is on the front of the house, east-facing, but the kids' rooms are at the back and they've suffered.

If I can find an animal that's like 90% vitamin D and kill and eat it then I can just fuck the sun off for good.

My room has been reaching 32c lately and it has been making me feel so ill, plus I suffer with clinical depression and honestly my mental health always suffers during summer so I finally forked over the £300 and bought myself a portable air conditioning unit and my god, it's heaven! I'm currently sitting in my ice cold bedroom freezing my ass off, I should lower the cooling but I'm just sadistically enjoying the cold for a little while first.

I can't stress how much better a proper AC unit is vs an air cooler, or a traditional fan, even those with compartments for water and ice, this is just on another level and worth every penny. I am so excited for night time so I can maybe get a good nights sleep, which hasn't been possible for so long.

Question for OP and other portable AC unit owners: do you have to seal up the window other than a small hole for the hose? Or is it enough to just put the hose out an open window?

My windows are designed in such a way that sealing them would be quite difficult and I'm wondering if a portable AC would do much for me without sealing.

It's worth knowing that the UK is built to deal with the weather we have 99% of the time - wet, overcast, cold. From the way our houses are built and decorated (typically to get warm and stay warm) to the clothes we wear, we're in no way prepared for the occasional heat wave. Even though it seems like an insignificant temperature to you, it's outside of our usual experience.

With that said, at least our houses can survive a stiff breeze and don't get eaten by insects.

I usually keep our house around 22/23 to be nice and comfy, last couple of weeks has pushed that up to 28-30ish and I'm constantly sticky. Doors and windows are open, fans strategically placed to create a wind tunnel has brought it down by a couple of degrees but it's still stickytime.

Managing to sleep just fine with a fan pointing at me on full blast and with nowt but a thin sheet.

We have to heat the house for far longer than we'd have to cool it. Pretty much everyone has central heating these days but I remember visiting grandparents houses when I was a kid and all they had was a single gas fire in the livingroom and maybe a couple of small electric heaters. Houses generally have needed warming up for much longer periods than they ever needed cooling down so that's where the investment went.

SIDE STORY: Went to Japan in the early spring once and nearly every place i stayed in the proprietor would show me how to use the air con unit for heating and would set it on something like 26 degrees as standard, which was just too damn hot. I was fine with it off!

Oh gods on a bus right now and I think my brain has melted into fluid like substance now.

It's so hot and I swear the radiators are on.

OP can you send some cool refreshing air in my direction?

Brilliant!

I do think when this topic rolls around every year we should have a PSA about some of the following:

- the fact that the U.K. has generally mild temperatures, so snow and heat destroys us
- Americans don't use kettles to boil water, they just use the microwave (the crazy fools that they are)

All the ones that seem to cause widespread consternation on the forum for a day or two.

And here I am in Toronto having to worry about both extreme heat (supposed to be around 35°C tomorrow with humidex of 44°C!!!) and extreme cold weather in winter.

The thing with the UK is, is that we are no acclimatised to any form of heat.

You may think our temperatures are pathetic, but we are very much more used the generic grey misery weather.

It's very similar to how we deal with snow:

WE DON'T

We can't handle either end of the weather spectrum, as we mostly sit comfortable in the mediocre range for 90% of the year, and it's all we talk about.
Literally, ever single British resident will usually ease their way into conversations by talking about the weather, even though it's mostly boring.

This right here.

Same here in Ireland too. Last few days have been hitting record highs of ~33 degrees Celsius. Usually we get a "summer" that lasts 2 weeks in May or June and highs are usually in the 24 degrees Celsius range.

AC right now sounds like heaven, congrats OP!

I clap before, during, and after my meals. I will now do so as I turn on my AC.

Imagine being in the centre of London on a bus, baking in basically a moving greenhouse with weak AC through the small vents and tiny portholes as windows in the middle of evening rush hour.

That's basically been my commute home from work every day for the past couple weeks. Bloody hate hot weather... =_=

And when I get home? A desk fan that blows the hot muggy air around my bedroom awaits me. Loooovely... =_=

Quote from something I read today - 'Summers are great in Scotland. You can still take your jumpers out of the wardrobe most weeks.' That gives an idea about how much we need aircon most summers!

the weather right now in the midlands (27 celsius) is perfect for me. Still not enough where I can't do my daily biz, only with less layers of clothing and the occasional sunbathing diversion. hell, I just went for a run. It's only when it gets above 30 or so where I have trouble functioning. I couldn't imagine living somewhere though where 35 celsius was considered cool for that place, yikes

You pretty much need to be able to seal it. Why are they designed like that though? If it's an odd shape you can cut a piece of wood to seal it up tolerably.

We need one of these.

My wife works night shifts and the school holidays are approaching.

Youre stuck between having the windows open and listening to every twat within a 500 yard radius playing dub step while they have their BBQs and paddling pools out....or having them closed and cooking yourself.

That's crazy. So you guys have mild everything basically with occasional dips above and below?

Yep - we have a very small temperature change during the year. However, anything out of that range we are unable to cope with. I'll try to remember to bump this thread around January when I have a day off due to a couple of inches of snow and my school closes as it is unsafe.

Ha that sounds like Texas. We get even a whiff of snow and the entire state grinds to a halt it feels like lol
