5-year old PS3 game that probably no one even plays anymore. Hard to get outraged over this, sorry.

But fuck Sony, amirite?

I bet Warhawk demo servers are still up. I think I spent over 200 hours just on that little and simple demo.

Damn 6 years fly by fast to bad it couldn't be as great as Warhawk I spent years playing that.

A F2P Warhawk with just cosmetics would be great.

So I'll say this: Starhawk Ultimate Edition is still currently for sale on the PS Store without mention of the shutdown, and it specifies that multiplayer is included. Maybe someone should edit that listing?

Edit: Speak of the devil, revised text for your reading pleasure:

Multi-player features for Starhawk will be terminated and no longer be available after June 30th, 2018. The single-player campaign and any other offline content will continue to be playable.

It's not up on the parent page, but it is on the page before you can actually buy it.

I really wish we had a new Warhawk for this gen.

I played and loved the shit out of Warhawk on ps3, though Starhawk didn't really do much for me tbh, it still sucks for those playing to just have it shutdown without notice really.

I think they might have just totally ceded that space to big F2P games like Fortnite. It's a shame, because they really *did* make some awesome stuff. Warhawk is absolutely the stand out for me (best oonline multiplayer ever?) but stuff like Motorstorm, Resistance, Killzone hitting its stride, MAG, Twisted Metal. Even God of War had multiplayer, and it wasn't that bad!
They still have TLOU coming up, and if it's anything like the original it'll be mainly a multiplayer game for me. The MP was 1000x better than the campaign for me and one of my all time favorites, despite their worse-than-EA garbage tier micro transactions.

Is this seriously an outrage thread over a game from 2012 that no one played? Holy shit. Are you forgetting how many times they warned about Gravity Rush 2 online going down? Demon's Souls? They gave so many warnings for those I got tired of seeing them.

Starhawk released in 2012. I'm genuinely shocked at anyone who still plays it. Wasn't even as good as Warhawk.

It's bad precedent. I don't want to spend every day thinking I won't be able to play x game I had fun with a couple years ago with zero notice. That would irrevocably alter my gaming habits in a negative way for me, because frankly I'm not often in the mood for old online games. But that doesn't mean I want to play it one last time.

These alerts aren't for the few people that have been playing it. That makes no sense; their behavior will probably be unchanged until the day the servers are down. It's for the people that haven't played in a while that maybe want a couple more evenings more to it.
They likely messaged everyone in-game and directly via PSN.
They are the owners of Starhawk that least need to be notified about the game shutting down. If I've been playing Starhawk these last few weeks, my behavior wouldn't change if I get notified or not.

I don't know what they were thinking with Starhawk, it was no where near as fun as Warhawk. Just didn't have the magic at all. All they had to do was make a Warhawk 2 with better graphics, more detailed maps, a few gameplay enhancements, and it would've been a hit.

I'd be curious to know if the announcement is made in-game.

Did the game let you know about this ingame?

No, there's not. Because evidently Sony deleted the entire in-game news section. This is what it looks like now.
fq8DtoU.jpg

So no in-game notice, and no mention on Sony's page for shut down servers. The only way you'd even know they're taking them down is by checking the Playstation Store page. Which is completely useless for anyone who already owns the game!

But at least there's people playing it now, i'd imagine a good chunk of which are because they just learnt about the shutdown.

How in the world is an online game being closed down without notice something that people are able to defend?

Maybe a combo of "it doesn't affect me" plus "it's old"? Not sure tbh, and I don't really understand it either, given how often people clamour for remasters or BC. At least they gave a year's worth of warning for PS+ no longer giving games on PS3 / Vita.

I mean the way they've handled it isn't the best but honestly I'm surprised it wasn't already shut down years ago

To be fair there has been warning month ago. You can't expect a heavy marketing for a server shut down. It's normal if people don't follow this kind of info regularly.
I played this game for a couple of days last week and only around 10-20 people are still playing it.

Basically it's a normal shutdown just like all other games before it no matter the publisher.

I loved Emmett in Playstation All-Stars. Calling down weapon pods, and turrets from the sky.

Yeah, only on the store page. There's a difference between shouting from the rooftops that the server will shut down and not even bothering putting it on their server shutdown page with the rest of their shutdowns.
They could have at least put it on that page + sent out a tweet or something. No one checks the store page, because no one is buying a digital copy of a 2012 game when used game stores like GameStop have it for much cheaper.

Man. I made the atrocious, last minute OT on gaf, but I was upset at some of the decision making in that game. Zones was THE mode to play but design flaws prevented it from being great/popular and so it died.

But can you imagine when they heard Fortnite became a thing when they had build and battle as their thing way back then? Neat idea, but poorly realized.

Remember when Sony further doomed the potential for Starhawk to get a decent multiplayer community by putting the single-player for free on PS+ but not the multiplayer? Good times.

Not cool for Sony to do this w/ such short notice. However, it makes sense since an announcement would be considered negative press for console warrior ammunition and this game's online community is pretty dead at this point anyways.

well its bad for business guys, if they tell you they are shutting it down, you might not buy the game and it will affect their sales. so try to understand from their sales perspective /s

I know a friend who plays daily and he has a group of about 15 friends on a clan from Mexico that still play.

I am sure it is not very populated but enough to play everyday.

So why are the drive by shitty comments ok?

I bet if they announced it the thread about that would still be "what the hell is starhawk" "who is even playing this in 2018" lol

I'm honestly surprised it was still up.

Bullshit they shut down the online of games like Gravity Rush 2. The initial plan to shut it down within a year was complete bullshit. Just what is PS+ paying for?

Is Starhawk even sold new any more? I think the negative press Sony may be trying to avoid is the more generally negative "Sony shuts their online down for another game" angle. But hey, if not enough people are playing it then it's definitely better to cut losses and invest elsewhere. I was super hyped for Starhawk when it first released but it just didn't have the staying power to remain relevant in 2018.

Didn't they announce a bunch of servers would go offline this year late last year? Either way, it could just be a matter of so few people, if any, people playing that they did not see a need.

Retail? No.
Digital? Yeah.
Also, if they wanted to avoid that PR angle, they could start by not shutting down the servers for a 15 month old game that isn't even real, synchronous multiplayer, so probably not requiring much server power (they were going to shut it down when it was 9 months old, but it got pushed back)
