Is there a chance I could like this game even if I'm not a fan of Metroidvanias? I just could never get into axiom verge or any of the Metroid games. I did enjoy cave story though which I suppose has some metroidvania elements
Depends on what you want out of a game like this. Hollow Knight's biggest strength, besides its art style and mechanics, is its sense of exploration and discovery. It is the heir apparent to the Souls games and Bloodborne in that regard; no other games have captured, as well as Hollow Knight, that Souls-esque sense of a sprawling world with history and the descent to darker weirder places, layers upon layers of intricately constructed environments to explore, uncovering cryptic lore and meeting interesting characters as you make your way through a place. The world that Team Cherry constructed is astounding, it's bigger and more smartly designed than you would imagine; it's hard to really appreciate the level of craftsmanship until you're playing and realize how dense it is but also how each area has a logical narrative reason for why it's the way it is and its location on the map.

Wrote this as my blurb for my GOTY list last year
Hollow Knight is the best Metroidvania I've ever played, bar none, and it's the only other game to capture that elusive essence that make the Souls game so engaging. The oppressive Gothic atmosphere, the layered complex world that grows darker and more haunting the deeper you descend, the meticulously constructed level design that connects regions in fascinating ways through both location and lore, the cryptic yet intriguing story and how the story is revealed through level design, secrets, characters, and so on, the compelling NPCs that can reveal a lot through only a few words and their design and their place in the world, the sense of mastery and overcoming challenge, the tight controls, the exploration and feeling of learning a map that Dark Souls and Bloodborne did so well, all with its own unique style, aesthetic, and lore

i did. its one of my favorite games on switch right now!

for me its more a zelda in 2d than a metroid. the exploration feels more like BotW in like its more open than what you think as you can use your own skills to do things that maybe with a "upgrade" are easier, but for many things (obviously not all) you are not completlety locked out of a path. and you have plenty of freedom to live your adventure in your own terms

I think you sold me. I'm almost finished with golf story and once I am, I'll download this. I also hear that at $15 this game is way under priced, but in my case it's a pricepoint that will ultimately cause me to give this game a shot

I'll buy the game on Switch after I beat DOOM which I just bought. Or maybe a bit further down the line as I have Dark Souls pre-ordered and it could release in a month or so. Don't want too many games to play at the same time, but this game looks like a must have, especially for that price.

I guess you're already sold, but I too am someone that doesn't really have much interest in this genre (It really came down to the art style and music enticing me, before I saw all the immense praise), and yet I freaking love this game.

Team Cherry deserves it. Such a content-packed game for just $15, and every victory over a boss feels so satisfying. Can't wait for Gods & Glory DLC.

Is there a DF FaceOff for this? I read that they had to rewrite a lot of the code to run well on Switch, I want to know what the final result is like.

Nice! So it's essentially the same on both platforms now? No reason to stick with PC unless you really really like sitting by a desk?

I don't have the Switch version but I assume so. Though there are some options on the PC version like turning v-sync off which makes the game more responsive with a higher fps (>60fps though it adds tearing in my case) and 3(?) levels of motion blur. But content wise it's exactly the same.

Its pretty much locked 60fps on Switch also

I think it possibly renders in 720p in docked though... with the artstyle it is kind of hard to tell - which makes it a smaller issue than usual

I played Switch first and then moved on to PC and there's definitely a difference in visuals. PC version looks sharper, most notably text but also the game in general. PC version is 1080p and I think Switch docked is closer to 720p. Otherwise experience is pretty much the same. It's too bad there are no comparison vids out there. I'd say if portability is not a factor, the PC version is the best option. And "really really like sitting by a desk"... Steam Link exists now you know, I play the pc version on tv too

The game on PC is pure bliss. I wonder if they fixed the bad pixel issue that was recognized but not addressed on PC last year when playing at a higher resolution. I would say the best version after playing both is the Switch version but portability plays a huge factor in this. The fact that I can take Hollow Knight and any indie game for that matter with me wherever I go is a huge bonus.

I eagerly await the next Team Cherry game that comes out and am curious what great adventures they will bring us next.

I have a Steam Link and use it quite a bit when there are no Play Anywhere versions, but it's really not an option for this type of game I'd say, I get both control latency and visual stutter.
But thanks for the visual difference info. Sounds good enough for a living room experience until an X Enhanced surprise arrives. Watching the download progression for the Switch version as we speak :)

All switch games stock renders at 720p in portable mode because the screen goes up to 720p, this actually helps alot with more demanding games as they dont have to try for more higher resolutions and the smaller screen helps when the res goes dynamic in some games.
Unless you do something weird like koei tecmo and down sample the game in portable mode from the native 1080p docked mode

Should be selling a lot more, seeing as how it's the best game currently available on the Switch.

For people who want a 90's styled game with contemporary enhancements, and with loads of content to explore at a cheap price, it might be the "best game". But so does Stardew Valley.

I just impulse bought this and Celeste. Usually I get a bit bored of Metroidvanias that aren't called Metroid but the praise for this game is something else

I'd be surprised if this doesn't hit a million by the end of year. It's an absolutely phenomenal game that's really perfect for a portable.

It's probably gonna creep into my top 10 games of all time by the time I do all the achievements and get the final two DLCs.

If you're wondering if you should buy this game- do it. Buy it now.

Bought it and am enjoying it thoroughly. If it ever gets a physical release, I'll buy it again. Really well done.

This is the best Castlevania game AND the best Metroid game. One of my favorite 2D action platformers of all time, period.

I hope this game doesnt kill the genre and make me not enjoy future Metroidvanias, like Bloodstained.

Well deserved. Title is up there with BotW and Odyssey as a must have for Switch. It wasnt even on my radar until the E3 announcement. I played Octo Expansion and then gave Hollow Knight a shot and was very surprised.

A year or two ago when SteamSpy was still able to access info more easily, I was paying close attention to Steam indie releases and generally speaking, selling 100k or more in your first month placed you in the top tier of indie successes. Selling 250k on a single platform in half a month places you in indie mega-blockbuster status.

I don't need to imagine. I'm crossing my fingers so hard for our Switch release and news like this gives me hope. I'd be pleased even if we only got a tenth of these figures spread out over the course of a year. :)

Plus one from me boo. Really looking forward to it. The switch has been amazing for myself when it comes to indies since it just fits the portable mode so well.

You really won't find it any more concisely put than this. If you're lurking in this thread, go get this game if you haven't already, it's a MASTAPIECE

This game is great.
It's beautiful, has great music, great art and graphics, the controls are tight and the game is huge. Super awesome value.

The game is truly as good as people are saying. I'm about 8 hours so far, and it has been a challenging, gorgeous, mysterious, and fun time. Highly recommended!

An impressive start. Since it is passed the two week mark now, anyone remember Hollow Knight's placing in the best seller list during its first couple weeks? I am curious if we could use this number to estimate any other sales.

In the US it was either #1 or #2 behind Minecraft for most of the past few weeks.

They really could have sold this for $20-25 but I hope this shows that there are also benefits in pricing games lower as it makes them more of an impulse purchase. I think the price point definitely helped sales, though I think it was poised to do good regardless.
indie games gotta be cheap, imo, even if you underprice the game
you have to compete with all the big studio titles that are on sale all the time, aside from the dozens of other indie games that come out every month, of which only a handful might ever become profitable
unless you have state-of-the-art 3D graphics, there's sort of an expectation that something like a indie game with hand-drawn art for example should only cost a fraction of those. You'll want to appeal to the people that pick up a cheap game on a whim
