Ranked is really frustrating me in this game.

I've been progressing in rank, gradually, but at the same time I'm definitely losing more often than I am winning. Every loss I seem to do at least, quite a bit better than my team mates, but it's just really frustrating.

In my last game the tank initiated the opening fight by using his escape (Ashe's cc immune charge) to get to the centre of the map, and the middle of the enemies. He was burst down pretty quick and died. After that, he wouldn't leave spawn, just kept throwing himself off the edge over and over.

Super frustrating to see stuff like that. I sent him an impolite message, nothing toxic but I did tell him he was trash, and asked if he always gave up when things didn't go his way. Obviously he responded equally unpleasantly.

If it makes you feel any better, this isn't just a ranked problem.

Man, I played a ton of overwatch a while back and bought this on a whim on my Switch. It's really great, I am very much enjoying it.

Yeah, but it doesn't really bother me there to be honest.

Just seems like right now, I either have really close games or get absolutely steamrolled, and when we get steamrolled my team don't do anything to compensate what's happening. They either run right back in as soon as they respawn (and die) or quit playing.

I don't even mind losing if I can have a good game. Potentially learning something and having some fun in a close match, but as my team mates tend to lose spirit as soon as we start doing poorly, it just snowballs into a loss where there's nothing interesting happening anymore.

Hahaha, that's pretty normal in ranked, it took me two weeks get to platinun V playing with strangers so I learned my lesson and now I only play ranked with a friend with a combo of damage+ flank or tank+healer

Even when I put in crazy amounts of work, we're still losing. I guess I could have been a better healer, but that's best damage and most kills with a support character. What do I have to do to win a game? That's like 10 losses in a row now. :(

In this case the problem was your flank and try to choose a damage when your team already have a healer, damage its indispensable to kill any tank.

Yeah looks like your Maeve was just accomplishing nothing, and two healers and a tank sounds like a comp that is gonna have a really hard time securing kills, ESPECIALLY on tanks who are just gonna sit on objectives. The tyra and Khan death numbers look like your frontline was just getting completely rolled over, while theirs was not.

Pip is one of the top damaging healers with the right Talent though. Super can be invaluable as well.

Definitely looks like Maeve wasn't pulling her weight as the main flank. Tyra probably could have pulled better damage numbers as well if she used her fire bomb wisely. To that end, she should have gone with Burn Monster (as Tyra almost always should until they nerf the damn thing). The lifesteal talent is swiftly countered by one level of Cauterize. Given how little healing Khan has, I'm guessing he was either quite lonely on the point or rarely used his battle cry.

Eventually managed to get a win last night. Though it's a testament to the people I'm playing with that I'm top damage with Barik. Absolutely a hard carry. 53 eliminations, 27 killstreak while the rest of my team were dropping like flies.

I don't even play Barik or want to play Barik it's just he's the only tank I know how to play that wasn't banned and I wanted to win a game for once. Maybe I should just main Barik. Our Drogoz and Seris were especially poor performers.

Just got to level 15 so I can start rank. Anything I need to know before I jump in? Both sides can ban a hero, it's siege, and you don't lose rank until your high up?

Other than obvious stuff, like pick caut/wrecker depending on enemy team composition. Try to pick heroes that fit your team comp. If you have last pick of hero you have quite a bit of power to counterpick, etc. If you're one of the first picks, the odds are that someone may explicitly counterpick you so be cautious picking champs that are super vulnerable to specific strategies (e.g. if you pick Skye, don't be surprised if someone picks Strix to reveal you for the entire game).

Oh I didn't realize this was a draft pick so that's good to know. Should everyone pick caut/wrecker or just the dps/flankers and maybe tank?

Is having free chests tied to play X number of games a problem? I could potentially see a lot of people just sitting there a bit to get the free game in. Not sure why but I thought I saw some people staying in the spawn and moving just enough to stay in it.

I had a game like that yesterday. Guy moved right outside the spawn at sat there all game. When I died and viewed him he was just moving a tick every few secs.

If you watch pro matches it's often that 4/5 will pick caut or wrecker.

Decisions that should influence which you pick

  • How many supports/tanks on opposing team
  • Does your character have kit that can reduce healing anyway?
  • How good is your character at spreading damage (e.g. Lian can easily spread damage across the entire team at once, therefore she's really effective with caut, Mal'damba is bad at spreading damage, therefore, bad with caut)

Supports often like to buy cool down reduction in particular, because it means you can get more healing out onto your team, but generally speaking if you're damage or flank then caut/wrecker is almost an essential first pick. You outright lose games if your team don't get their purchases right early on.

Unfortunately, like every other team game, the best you can do is perform to your best and rely on your teammates to play well in order to secure a win.

A one game sample is never going to be enough becaues it's entirely possible that one or more of your teammates played uncharacteristically bad during this specific match. If you are better than the average player at your current level, you will most likely climb, eventually. However, since you are not the only factor in determining the outcome of a winner, it will probably take a longer time than it would for you to normalize your ranking in Starcraft, for example.

I am climbing, slowly. It's just with the long matchmaking time and back and forth wins/losses it's quite a chore. :(

Wow thanks for the detailed response man. Looks like I need to do some research on what counters what and which characters are best with which traits.

I didn't realize that teams couldn't use the same hero's in rank. Had to use some people I've never used before. Oops.

Yeah, okay.

So at least on PC the free diamond chests (200 elim/10 matches played) is valid, this can be done in bot matches. PS4 players should give this a try.

I got Dark Lord Torvald and Dune Crawler Cassie

The queues are so long for rank on the Switch. It's taken me over 2 hours to get 8 qualifying matches done. :(

Edit. Bronze 5 :O I didn't think I that did bad. Had Top damage, top support, top flanker a few games. :(

I'm sure this has been discussed to death but, on the Switch, there's no way to get the social media or Twitch Prime stuff right?

I just got in to this and the play against bots until you're level 5 sucks, playing against braindead AI isn't fun and the entire team is just waiting a tthe enemy gates for them to get out and shoot them on sight.

No way, that's one of the smartest things they do. Against real players you'd just get slaughtered and people tend to quit if they don't get a win or two under their belt early.

Hold the phone. I just watched a NWR video and one of the developers flat out said Paladins has voice chat on Switch. Anyone try this out or know how to activate it?

EDIT: I just looked in the options and there's a voice volume. Uh, no one knows this game has voice chat. I haven't heard anyone talk.

This is a bit extreme though, these bots are basically braindead lemmings, there's no real game being played and it doesn't really prepare you what playing against players is.

Yeah there's quite a few annoying things about the bots.

  • You really do have to play against them for a long time. Getting to level 5 can take about 8 matches, and it only takes one or two for most players to become aware that they're facing bots.
  • The bots are really bad. They don't even try to mimic human behaviour, they mostly run in a straight line towards the point and die. They're not accurate with their attacks either, so they're bad on all fronts.
  • The bot AI is completely inappropriate for flankers because they never flank.
  • Even if you party up with high level friends, you still can't play with real human players, you all get dragged into bot games.
It put quite a few of my friends off of the game, because even though they wanted to jump in with me and play, we had to sit there and play an hour of bot games together. Something none of us found fun.

I realized I was fighting bots because I got like 30 kills and not even dying once during an entire match, their names is also a good indicator.

I'm gonna fight through it because the game seems pretty good and I like the clean and slick interface.

Play of the game in Paladin's is always such ass. It doesn't seem take anything into account other than the kill/damage frequency. So often ends up in really crappy situations like Tyra dealing a significant amount of damage with a grenade, while getting a kill, or Victor spraying down two people.

In my last game I got a quad with Strix, and it got beaten out of play of the game by a Victor triple Spray. Sure, whatever.

I'm not sure what the criteria is for play of the game. One time I got it by killing one guy that was stopping the cart from moving into the capture point and thus winning the round. I thought that was different than what I usually see.

Sorry I have to bring this voice chat on Switch question again but this is somewhat important and something that really needs to be addressed. There just hasn't really been a good job of communicating voice chat on Switch. I rarely hear anyone play with chat on Fortnite on Switch and when I do talk to the few, no one knew you could use a wireless USB headset on Switch I'm docked mode.

There is a video from Nintendo World Report that has someone from Hi-Rez day that the Switch version of Paladins does have voice chat out of the box, and when fumbling through the options, I did see there was a voice volume on there. So far though, I haven't chat without anyone in that game. Have you guys tried it or are aware of anything different about this?
