The fact I'm actually going to be buying this game for Switch even though I have a 1070 PC says something to me. It means Nintendo's philosophy is working and that I am more inclined to game on their system than any other purely out of simplicity sake. The fact I can take Doom, Skyrim, Wolfenstein or even Minecraft on the go is mind blowing to me.

I knew that the tech inside the current Switch isnti a powerhouse, that's just the game you play when it comes to managing portability with technical specifications. But the fact these kind of titles are even coming to the system is a feat in itself and I want to reward those, with no doubt further development becoming better as the tools become easier to understand.

Ultimately though, I believe the Switch will flourish the most with titles made specifically for it. If companies like Square Enix with Octopath do that, they will likely be rolling in a lot of money.

The game is mostly pretty serviceable, visually. But there are some really bad moments occasionally.

I couldnt even make out what was in this room before I got spotted coming out of the tunnel shaft

Wolf is officially in the Top 30 on the Eshop. I wonder how high it will go.

Really not expecting great sales considering it's a 6 month old port that bombed on the other platforms and does not have the benefit of the launch roll out ad campaign.

That's seems like there's some shading bug over there, it should not look like that. (Unless that's what it looks like and is just blurry)
What is it suppose to be?

I look forward to Bethesda's attempt at a Doom like patch they would use to slightly sharpen things again

Suppose to be this room(see below) as I'm coming out of a ventilation tunnel

Could it be a bug? The visuals only appear this way in this particular room, as soon as I go back where I was it looks fine.(not this screenshot below)

Holy fucking shit. Can you pixel count these 2 screenshots, Dark1x ? Isn't this less than 360p? lol

Especially the previous one, this one looks kinda better

You can barely make out the enemy at the bottom of the screen. Doesn't even look 3D. Neither does the enemy to the left

From my memory (I played the game at launch) that room should not look like that. It's like nothing is lit properly and the lights have no colours

The game can get blurry, even up close to certain details but I have NEVER seen anything closely resembling the blurry screen of this... I also think the screen capture function in this game is not very good on the Switch

Tried to pixel count the first image, it's so blurry and there are barely any long straight edges for me to come up with a number lol
Maybe the more experienced people can find something there.

I was so completely blown away by the PSP I bought a ton of "AAA ports." I found the performance to be more of an issue than the stick, which you could get used to after a while. I have Prince of Persia Revelations which is a (mostly) competent port of Warrior Within, and it was mindblowing.

Wow, those screen shots are really weird. Gotta be a glitch. How far into the game is it? Only time it's happened?

This is very close to the end I believe. Happened maybe 4-5 times, I can't say for sure. The visuals can really vary in handheld. Indoor sections can look great, outdoor areas not so much, especially the Manhattan and New Orleans area.

I seriously can't fathom some of the responses in here.

Let's be clear - the resolution is bad at some points. Bad. This is absolutely true. However it is STILL an impressive port, regardless of the minimum resolution being terrible.

Why is it still impressive? Because this is a handheld version of a 2017 triple A PC & console game.

Triple A games are made to tax the hardware of systems. Hardware architecture results in a form factor that results in a big block sitting underneath your TV. Handhelds are made to be light and moved around, and to consume low power in order to last a decent amount of time. The visual reality of this is this image:

mRRxpMB.jpg

Even accounting for the fact the Switch is a newer system with access to more recent hardware, I honestly find it astonishing that the thin slither of a system, which has some of its size dedicated to controls and screen, is running the same high-end game as the systems below it in any salvageable form.

FYI I made a recent post in the Fortnight thread for Switch citing a concern that the framerate gets so low and using it to make a case that I'm not sure these Switch ports are a good idea. However, if we are going to have them, the resolution trade-off is absolutely the right one to make in my opinion, and the way it's been used to even make this port possible is outstanding to me.

Just finished playing the game exclusively in handheld. Overall, the experience was pretty great.

Outside of a few select areas, the visuals hold up fine. Performance was very stable, I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary for a 30 fps game. No crashes to speak of. Controls were solid, thanks to gyro aiming. This really should be standard for every FPS game, just makes a world of difference.

The game itself was pretty great, I don't know why it got so much hate. Difficulty was fine, I played at the 2nd highest difficulty setting and never felt it was too much, I easily could've played this at the highest. Gunplay felt great, fun selection of weapons, and movement never felt better for a (console) FPS game. Level design could be hit or miss, but there were some pretty neat Nazi mega bases in this game to take on. Story line was really great for an FPS game with a diverse cast of characters and just enough humor. I really felt they knocked this out of the park. The characters really sold me on this. Very much looking for to Young Blood, I really hope it makes its way to Switch. If not, that's what I have my PC for. If you haven't played it yet and are on the fence about getting it, I say go for it. It was worth it for me.

Can someone make an OT so we don't have to use this clusterfuck of a thread to discuss playing the game?

Panic Button deserve better.

No offense, but how can you possibly call that port competent? It had so many audio issues that most of the time there was no music and most sound effects didn't ever sync up. Audio should be a given for any game...

(Btw, I bought this back in the day simply because it was a "AAA" port back in the day on a portable)

Once the next gen hits with Sony and MS, the switch in relative terms will be Nintendo's new 3DS. Not sure how many will want to play 3rd party games on their 65" screens with such a large tech gap. With some luck, Nintendo is working on discreet dock that doubles or even quadruples processing while docked.

I don't really remember any audio issues! It's been a long time. :)

If you would've said a few years ago that the successor to the 3DS could run games like Doom 2016 and Wolfenstein II, I don't think a single person would have believed you.

To be fair, audio was also broken on Xbox. It was a real issue with that title.

I gotta be honest the team that ported Doom and Wolfenstein II deserve a lot of credit and respect. What they have managed to achieve, performance wise out of the Switch is amazing.
Good job on them. True pros.

Dear god. Why anyone would want to play this version when you can have 60fps and 1440p+ resolution on a big screen is beyond me. I get the portability argument, but is this a game you would really enjoy portable? Especially when it looks like that?

I played the game both on a 100 inches projector screen, and on tabletop mode, and honestly it looks fine... I notice the blurriness of course (though not always), but nothing game breaking and the gyro aiming feels even better than Doom (and I can't explain why). 30fps is ok though like I said before, I wonder what kind of results would have yielded an unlocked frame-rate.

I wasn't sold on Panic Button to be honest (after Doom and Rocket League), and I still think that if these ports were handled internally (or at least at the same time the game was developed) the results would have been much better, but overall I think they did a great job with this Wolfenstein port and I understand that they probably have limited resources (who knew about them 9 months ago honestly?). Now, I hope that their unannounced project is the port of a game that was developed also with the Switch in mind from the beginning, which could make their work easier.

It has been explained exhaustively in this thread why "anyone would want to play this", and yes the whole game looks like that....

I'm fairly confident this was a bug, the vast majority of the game in portable looks fine. I have a PC capable of 4k with a TV to match. I still prefer to play portable. Its just infinitely more comfortable and convenient. Before Switch, I was a die hard PC enthusiast (still am, outside of Switch). If you would told me I would trade 1440p 60fps for sub hd + 30 fps, I would've thought you were nuts. But here I am. Any multiplat that comes to Switch, I'll be getting there. There are certain exceptions where I may double dip, but generally speaking, this is my new favorite way to play all my games.

Are you saying that if you had a choice sitting at home between playing it maxed out on PC or on Switch via handheld you would choose the latter?

So, after a while playing both docked (50" 4K TV) and portable, this is fine. It looks good. A tad too blurry, but the framerate is super solid, especially docked. The art, design and underlying visuals are amazing, and so is the gunplay.
I still think that, had this been handled by Machine Games themselves, the game would be the same but a bit sharper. There are many ports out there that have less of a performance differential compared to the other versions. And oversights like the 50% speed arcade old Wolfenstein are unacceptable. Panic Button has been becoming more familiar with the hardware, but an internal developer always understands the game better, like what happened with Rocket League.
In any case, I do think this is a proof of concept for third party games on the Switch. This is a very demanding game. Judging by its performance on the XBOX One, this is a game that many developers would have opted to lock to 30FPS and run at 900p with higher shadow resolution, higher AF, etc.
