Rumors that the DOJ will appeal the AT&T and TW merger are getting louder. And the DOJ should and probably will appeal. Here's why rooting for ISPs to get even bigger is bullshit, Era.
One of the only correct applications of the word "monopoly" on this site.
Well I for one certainly couldn't have!
As to its price-increase theory, the government itself conceded that the merger would cause prices to go down for millions of AT&T customers nationwide. The government's own "bargaining model" likewise showed a price decrease for all consumers, once the correct data were employed. And the government's own economic expert effectively repudiated its other two theories of likely harm. The government, in short, gave the Court no basis for finding that this merger is likely to reduce competition at all, much less substantially. Rather, the evidence overwhelmingly showed that this merger is likely to enhance competition substantially, because it will enable the merged company to reduce prices, offer innovative video products, and compete more effectively against the increasingly powerful, vertically integrated "FAANG" companies.
Companies will get bigger, other companies will rise. It's the nature of the beast.
Just canceled Directv cause they decided half a year into a contract they didn't want to honor it. Sadly had to go to Comcast. Cause you know monopliesparents are damn close to cancelling Directv as it is, it has gotten progressively worse and worse since AT&T took it over. Wonder if another price hike will be the straw that breaks the camel's back.

"The evidence overwhelmingly showed that this merger is likely to enhance competition substantially, because it will enable the merged company to reduce prices, offer innovative video products, and compete more effectively against the increasingly powerful, vertically integrated 'FAANG' [Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, and Google] companies," AT&T told US District Judge Richard Leon in the brief.
"There is no sound evidence from which the Court could fairly conclude that retail pay-TV prices are likely to increase," AT&T said in that same filing.
Free market? Oh no no no, monopolies are merely a consequence of an over-regulated market. Why, if the government would just get its hands out of private business altogether, then you'd see true capitalism!
I switch the Cricket Wireless and I haven't been happier. Saving over $100 a month on bill and I get more data per month as well. Fuck AT&T those monopolizing cunts.
My mom did this and started using Netflix and Hulu. Turns out there is a 150GB cap on her internet from AT&T and it costs more in overcharges. She can't change the internet because AT&T DSL is the only option at her address, so if she wants tv she has to get DirectTV. This company is the official definition of a monopoly I swear.

I've heard people say this, but it's hard to know how many of them actually believe it.
They aren't going to appeal. The lawyers the current DOJ has are idoeological idiots they are blaming the loss on CNN, they had terrible arguments and they never even bothered to considers the ramifications of the net neutrality rules being done away with just so they wouldn't admit on record how shit that decision was.
Those are the big corporatists. Everything they say is doublespeak and they don't personally believe any of it. When they say, "Keep your government hands out!" what they really mean is "Cut my taxes, remove the regulations that cut into my bottom line, but use tax revenue to give me subsidies and invest in the infrastructure I rely on, and create just enough regulations to keep the barrier to entry high." They know damn right they couldn't be as profitable as they are without government help. It's the rubes at the bottom who parrot the free market BS because it's what their business-friendly ("what's good for business is good for jobs!") politicians tell them is best and because it's a simple talking point.Oh they believe it alright, until their business starts failing because of... you guessed it! The free market.
You saw it a lot during the recession "Nuh uh Nobama, don't you touch muh free market!"
Business starts failing: "Bail my failing company out Mr. President! I'm a job creator!"
Case in point, the American auto industry, the banking industry, etc.
Actually... I don't think common folk understand this. The Justice Department - very much like here in Brazil - has more time to appeal. They have until August to appeal and the rumors that they will in fact appeal are brewing since June 15th. Also, this:
This is happening. It won't stop AT&T and TW merger, but will definitely put some restrictions. This isn't over yet.
AT&T bought Cricket years ago. Shame because they were a pretty solid company.I switch the Cricket Wireless and I haven't been happier. Saving over $100 a month on bill and I get more data per month as well. Fuck AT&T those monopolizing cunts.
